The White Wolf Chapter 46: Arguing Alphas

The room was still. No one dared breathe to loudly. The servants who had been working in the back, immediately stopped what they were doing. One was barely able to catch a teacup that had slipped through the fingers of a startled valet.

Caspian’s body was tense as he stared down alpha Howard. Gabe and Enzo looked as if they were ready to leap into a fight.

Alexia stood still in shock. Her brain could not process the words that had been uttered.

“What did you say?” Caspian said slowly in a low voice.

From her position, Alexia could see her father and brother ready to strike.

All eyes turned to Alpha Howard. The room waited from his response. His throat bopped in nervousness as the weight of the words he had spoken just occurred to him.

He gulped. An action that echoed across the room and was heard by all.

“I-I believe we can all relate to the stress this situation is putting on us.” The slight shake of his body causing his voice to stumble.

Alpha Denise gave him a nod of encouragement, an action that had Caspian narrowing his eyes. He marked the action.

Watching the scene unfold, Alexia wondered if he would backtrack or further dig his own grave.

“And so you challenge my leadership?” The king said in disgust with a tilt of his head.

“I j-just want what is best for my pack-k.” He retorted. The words did not come easily out of his mouth.

“Perhaps others here share in your beliefs. Does anyone else feel the same as Alpha Howard?” The shift in tone caused fear to shoot through the eyes of many watching the interaction.

The others in the room looked away. Many finding the floor to become rather fascinating.

Desperate, Alpha Howard looked to Alpha Denise with his eyes pleading.

Remembering the action of Alpha Denise from earlier, Caspian decided to bring him into the conversation. “Alpha Denise, do you feel the same way was Alpha Howard? After the way you spoke last night but if I mistook your words, please enlighten me.”

Alpha Denise’s eyebrows shot up in surprise at the mention of his name as if he was not expecting Caspian to speak to him.

The silence was loud as Caspian waited for a response.

“No, your majesty. I believe that Alpha Howard is only speaking out for fear of his pack.”

Always the courtier, playing the part. Alexia thought.

Alpha Howard whirled to Alpha Denise as if he could not believe the words he was speaking. His mouth slightly opened.

“Is there a problem Alpha Howard?” Caspian asked in a voice that resembled a cat playing with a mouse.

Hesitating before responding, he finally said “No.” before adding “Your Majesty.” Then sat down in defeat.

The few words he spoke caused the room to expel a sigh of relief.

Caspian stared at the alpha for a minute after he sat with his head hanging low in defeat.

Moving on from the interaction, Caspian spoke. “I would like to thank you all for coming to celebrate our new queen this weekend-“

“Goddess save the queen!” Was yelled from the crowd followed by the repeating of the phrase from the group. Caspian and Alexia gave tense smiles to the phrase.

After they finished, Caspian held out his hand and Alexia stepped forward grasping it with her own.

Together they stood there in solidarity.

“I cannot think of better way to end the celebration. May you all have a safe journey home. You are dismissed.”

At the king’s dismissal the group stood and bowed before exiting the room.

One look from Caspian and the others knew their meeting from the early morning was about to continue.

Caspian led Alexia into his office with Luca and her father right on their heels. Once they were inside Caspian let go of his mate’s hand and ran his own through his hair in frustration.

After a few minutes Gabe and Enzo filed in.

Gabe let out whistle. “I was getting ready fight.”

“Oh, I’m pretty sure everyone in the room thought they were about to witness a bloodbath. Did you see how fast they ran out of the room.? Luca said with amusement.

“To openly challenge me…” Caspian muttered mostly in thought.

Luca and Gabe shared their assessments while Caspian was deep in thought. Alexia watched with worried eyes.

“Luca will visit Alpha Howard first. I want to see if he can get Howard to turn on Denise before he gains his confidence back.” Caspian said interrupting the conversation, getting right to the point.

“You think Denise prompted him?” Gabe said with a tilt of his head.

“You don’t?” Caspian responded with a raised eyebrow.

“It would not surprise me.” Jacob cut in, his detest for the alpha evident.

“I’ll leave at once.” Luca said with a bow.

“What about Alpha training?” Alexia pipped up stopping her brother from leaving the room.

The others looked at her confused till Luca spoke. “I think we’re past alpha training.”

“If it makes you feel better I can yell at him while he runs laps.” Gabe jested with a tired smile. The dark circles around his eyes beginning to show.

Alexia rolled her eyes at the remark.

“Besides they’re done like what? Next week? Then they’ll all be going back to their packs and leaving us in peace once again.” He continued.

“You don’t miss your students?” Alexia said in surprise.

“I miss being able to make their lives miserable when they piss me off.” Gabe grumbled while picking at a piece of lint on his clothing.

“Luca.” Caspian said ignoring the exchange.

“Yes my Lord?”

“Make the bastard squeal.” Caspian said with eyes looking for vengeance.

A smile appearing on Luca’s face. “My pleasure.”
