Caleb sat in my office while Isabelle, Noah, and Minnitta were packing maternity clothes. It was a good thing they both were about the same size, but also, I think it was an excuse for my mate to be with her dear friend. They were all raised together as pups, and their bond was strong for it.

“Is there any reason you asked to speak with me?” He asked stiffly. I got up and locked the door.

“There are two. One: I know you have experience with humans, right?” I asked. He nodded. His pack may have been a pack in the boonies, but he and his father ran the largest supernatural prison this side of the Mississippie. The other one I’d also had the pleasure of being held in… the DustMoon Pack in the Arizonon desert.

But that wasn’t why I locked the door. He was a smart man, I assume he knew the other thing would be the subject I actually wanted to talk about.

“I assume for the second time you’ve paused, that the other one has to be something you don’t want to share.” He smiled slightly.

“No I really don’t, but know it isn’t a bad thing… Minnitta will most likely bare a girl.” I mumbled, looking out the window. He looked at me as if I were crazy.

“I don’t care.” He stated simply. He was about to leave entirely until he paused. He’d gotten up and put his hand on the knob. “Wait… why is that important?”

“Honestly I don’t see my brother being too picky if the pup’s a boy… but the point is that your grandfather already told me your mate will birth Xaxas’s mate.” I said finally. I didn’t want to scare him too much; I wasn’t even sure should I have said anything….

“Then we should call him so they can prepare.” I immediately denied him that.

“Stop. Think about it. He punished Isabelle for something anyone would do if they had the power to do so…. I feel if we openly share this information with anyone else, they may try and take her or your pup from you…” I said putting a hand on his shoulder.

“Then why tell me?” He asked clearly upset. His eyes were his wolf’s. It was probably him that wanted to know.

“Because I know just as hatred and suspicion is thrown on my pups, they will do the same with yours if they knew. I also don’t know if my brother would visit you as my father does with me from time to time… and I’d rather not have you surprised. I would also not have wanted you to go and share that surprise with the wrong wolf.” I looked to see his eyes return blue.

“I trust your words Bryson, as well as your judgment on this. For now, just as he only told you… let us only know this between ourselves. I don’t want to scare Mini… but I also don’t know if leaving her in the dark is a good thing.”

“For now, it might be.” I said quietly. “She’s a timid hound. I don’t want to upset her too much while she’s with pup.”

“I know my mate; she’s not the timid pup she used to be, but she’s still scared for so much changing so soon. I know too that my pack won’t pup with her either, because she doesn’t smell pregnant. She just smells a little more like hound than usual, but that could be from how their kind is.”

“Well… they are technically prey since they’re so small; even a fresh turned pup could probably destroy a pack of theirs since they’re only about the size of a large deer. Smaller shifters don’t get strong scents.” I scratched my chin, but he narrowed his eyes at me. “I don’t mean that as a bad thing. It is simply the truth.”

“That doesn’t mean you just go and say it.” he grumbled. “Come on; for now, you have to meet with mortals. Let’s get you ready.”

“Sorry.” I muttered, not meaning to offend. He looked surprised for a second, before returning to his usual stoic nature.

I rummaged around for the shades finding the ones that Jerold let me have. Through them, my eyes looked brown, though this might not work…. “I may have to use contacts.” I looked at myself in the mirror. I wasn’t going to fool anyone up close. “That or have Ven at the forefront of my mind to make them black… humans have that color I think.” I mumbled. In the light, they looked like black mirrors, but that’s something I don’t think they would notice?

“I have an emergency pair I’ve never used. Something Mini asked me to pack but we might not need them.” He left out the room to go get them, while I looked around for the suit I already had in here somewhere. I thought I folded it neatly in my desk, though it seemed my mate must have moved it. I went to our room, hearing giggles. When I came in, they were sitting on the floor, not packed, nor ready in any way to do anything other than play with our pups, who chewed on a toy.

“I hope it’s a little girl! Oh my Lady if she is, Grace will have a playmate.” She smiled.

Noah was on his back, playing airplane with Tyson while Kaizen waited his turn. However, he chose to leave me be. It was because I asked him to let Caleb help while he watched the girls. If he was here, the Royal Guard of the King of Halves was not far off.

“Awe yes. Would you like that my little fluffy butt?” giggled Isabelle.

Mama. She wagged her little tail. Being held for a second, before she put her down and she ran to me. Papa!

I let her follow me to the closet before petting her and putting her down. If she wanted to come along, I wouldn’t mind. Mortals’ machinery can’t work here, and if they tried anything, it’d been a while since I had man flesh. The only problem would be that I couldn’t risk it. Humans would be too unpredictable. “Awe she looks like she wants to go!” Said Mini.

“I would rather they stay here, seeing as how the humans might want to touch them.” I half lied. I actually wanted to have them with me, but I had to be a firm papa.

“He’s right.” Chimed in Noah. “Sorry I’m not going, but I wouldn’t be much help.” he lied.

“I only came in here for my suit.” I said shaking my head. It was like I had 4 pups today, but I couldn’t blame him. I would rather be playing with small pups than in meetings too.

“I hung it up so it wouldn’t wrinkle.” She got up and gave it to me, and I thanked her leaving before I changed my mind. I changed in my office, though the only thing I couldn’t fix was the tie. I’d never learned how to do that. For now, I had put my hair in a low manbun since no matter how much I tried shaving the sides, it all came back. The beard did too, but I had already shaved.

Caleb was already dressed, but without asking he untied his tie to show me how. I don’t think I could have found better people to have around even if I went looking for it. I let my eyes turn black to finish the look, and Caleb put his hand to his chin.

“I mean, I’ve Seen humans with dark eyes, but not this dark… it should be fine. Ven just keep him steady and don’t come out.” He said quietly, getting a nod from my wolf in my mind, though only I could see that.

We both linked our mates so as not to disturb them too much from their bonding, going downstairs. This was my first time in a suit, and I hated the damn thing already. I felt constricted of movement, but there would be no shifting anyway.

We got in my car, and I drove to the lumber yard. These men had asked to meet with me as they had a large order and wished to do more with me. We had everything we needed already, even a small kiln to season the wood ourselves. They wanted the discount lumber for their luxury condos they were building in Bison.

They were small, smelling weak. It made me wipe my mouth. Since I had Ven in the front of my mind, it made me hungry. Contacts would have been the better choice, but I just didn’t want to put those things near my face.

I shook hands with the taller one. He was a scruffy redhead who was clean shaven, with his curled fluff brushed and tamed as best as he could. The slightly smaller human looked to be a teenager, though he gawked at me. I was a full head and shoulders bigger than the average human, though there was nothing I could do about that. However, just in case, Caleb was there more for support, and also the help just in case I slipped up. “Good morning, Mr. Davenport.” I fake smiled.

“My my, good morning Mr. Charred. I bet you get allot of Bryson the Beast Jokes?” He chuckled.

Me and Caleb shared a knowing look before he spoke up. “Yes, he does. That and ‘how much milk did he drink’ in school. I’m his brother in law, Caleb.” He smiled.

“It seems we both brought family. That’s my son Christin.” The teen shook my hand, and I was very careful… I hated touching them because I was worried I’d break their hand if I put any pressure.

The boy shook his hand as if I’d hurt him anyway. Lady damnit. He smiled still, but honestly, I just wanted to get this over with. “You wanted to order about $52,000 of lumber if I recall.” I said with a small smile.

“Yes. My boss saw the quality of the grain at Gardens Inn downtown, and thought to get some of your locally sourced wood.” He beamed. “He intends to rebuild the college district, supported by some rich local donor and his husband.” He said casually.

“Ah yes, we felled so many this year. I have to get rid of it all.” I chuckled outwardly, but inwardly the pain of Why we had so much was still being reaped. But at least he was in a genuine good mood, as we were selling what we had for cheap. Ellion’s death cause so much devastation, but the trees we could haul out and cut were good, just not scheduled to be taken down. Entire zones of wood had to be felled or dragged here as fast as possible, leaving us with overstock. I sold it for half its value, taking the cut now, to make room for fresh later… this man was actually a god send.

“Oh yeah, some crazy disease swept through half of Missoura, you’re about one of 4 or five yards that have good wood. I can’t wait to see it.” He smiled.

“I didn’t know that.” I said with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh yeah, anyone on the Arkansaw border really got it bad. All the crops got blighted too down there.” He said as if it were common knowledge, but to even Caleb, it was a surprise. they lived I guess too far east.

We walked and he saw the large trees that were still thankfully alive, along with the lumber. It was hard to keep up this falseness though. I wanted this to be over so I could go home. Lady damnit this was boring….
