The Prisoner’s Princess Chapter 115
Bryson
My braid was down my back, my shaved sides would grow back by the end of the week, and I had my coffee without spilling it on my suit. It was about midnight, and I would go to the church in Jentucky. I figured that location would make the most sense, because no one was harassing from my state. I drove in my Nissan going the speed limit, listening to human radio. They debated about politics, as I think the next human leader was going to be elected next year. We didn’t involve ourselves in their affairs, at least not the wolves. But of course, I couldn’t enjoy myself on an almost three hour drive, because they seemed to be waiting for me.
The moment I crossed the border, it seemed priests were trailing me, however it didn’t scare me. They should know better, and I did too. They stayed a safe distance from me, but it seemed their numbers were growing.
I texted Noah, as Jerold was dealing with my brother. He didn’t respond, but I heard the blare of sirens in my rearview mirror. They weren’t pulling me over, but they were letting me know that they were with me. This was priests disrupting pack business. No one would question Noah intervening in this, as I had to think of Caleb. The rest of the drive was less stressful.
I got into Bison, and I felt DeJa’Vu…. Why do supernaturals have to be the ones to make peace? I held a growl from my wolf. Ven thought to just shift and eat them, but he also understood the war that would bring.
I found the cathedral, but their gates were closed until they saw my car, and priests at 3 am opened the gate. I parked my Nissan, and got out. The moment my foot touched the pavement my horns came out on their own accord, and in the reflection of the stain glass windows, I saw a small flame float between them.
That was new.
“Dark one.” Said the priest who opened the gate for me. He was young. I let it slide.
I sighed. “My name is Bryson.”
Another car pulled up, and I recognized the scent of Kaiden. He came out his Camaro with a suit on. He adjusted his tie, giving a small growl. “What are you doing here Bryson?” He said a little agitated.
“The same as you.” I glanced at all the 20 cars that soon filled the parking lot. Many of the Secret Police cars were unmarked, and we all went inside. The place…. It felt unwelcoming. I saw the statues on the wall, but couldn’t make out who was what because I’d never stepped foot on holy land before. I could guess that the man with everyone kneeling to him had to have been their god, but other than that it looked like a fight of angels and demons.
There were so many people in church though there were no cars. Women held crying babies who were rocked by their mothers, but it seemed they were fussy. They sat in pews, praying, or at the candles holding out their hands as if to get warm, but everyone ignored them. I looked at them, and they looked back, but for some reason I felt I shouldn’t be doing that.
“This way.” Said the young priest, leading us to a cathedral passageway inside a small box. I felt cramped, as did the other supernatural creatures. We were bigger than the average human, and there were some who didn’t feel comfortable at all going down that smelled of bull.
The place was candle lit, and inside it seemed the high priests were already sitting tall, hands on their swords. “What brings the Crown Prince and the Son of the Adversary here?” He said as if he didn’t know.
“This.” Said Kaiden before I did. He handed them a folder. “This is transcript from a recorded call. It was traced here.” He said firmly.
“I am here because I received word of this through the eyewitness. You overstep and break the law.” I grumbled with crossed arms.
They looked somewhat shocked. They must have thought they could get away with this, and they seemed impressed…
“This means nothing.” Said the one who sat in the center.
“It does.” I retorted. “Our lines are private, and only known from a pack directory. So tell me who gave you this information.” I demanded, but he slapped his hand on his table.
“I don’t have to tell the Son of the Adversary anything!” He growled.
“We come with a warrant.” Said one of the officers with reddish orange hair. I didn’t see him come down. He smelled like…. Feathers?
“How do we know you won’t use it anyway?” He said leaning back a bit.
“I won’t you have my word. As a supernatural, you can actually trust that.” He said with a small frown and there were murmurs of agreement behind him.
“A dog from Ohiya.” He said truthfully, but I needed more than that. I needed his name not because I didn’t know who it was, but because I wanted to hear it.
“Spill the name old man.” Growled Kaiden. “You harass my son, and as Crown Prince I could burn this place down and be in the right.”
“And the war you would start for words would be worth it?” He growled back, though it was human. “He only called himself the true Third Seat.”
“Brutus’s son.” “Said Kaiden.
“By law, then you both have rights to retaliate as you see fit. As for the Church, if you go near their territory, you will have the force as well as the Kings to deal with.” Said an officer that smelled of unicorn. He wasn’t in charge, he smelled too young to be, but they can be trusted.
“He would also have help from me, an Old One and by that extension two gods and a brother.” I crossed my arms. It was no bluff. I already had support. The room was silent for a while. “I hope you feel like the bear you poke is worth it.”
“It is.” He said glaring at us. “You cut off states with His influence. I know you plot something.”
“I cut off my territory, as well as the Crown Prince since you placed pressure on us.” I retorted. “I can bet money that the only reason you tried finding my pack, as well as his, was for control purposes. Those lands were willingly given to my father, and your god has done nothing about it, meaning you likely still have holy ground throughout it, and it doesn’t affect you at all.”
“The unholy stench clouds our senses.” He said as if that would make me have pity.
“And yours only reminds me of sin.” I growled.
“And we no longer have anything to talk about. The Last leader here was tolerant of this kind of frivolity with words, but I will not. Get out. All of you.” He demanded.
“I will leave, when I am done.” I snarled. Their candles flickered, and their leader stood.
“On what authority?” He growled.
“On my own.” I growled back, though mine was real. “You will leave those pups alone. They are young. You Will stop this nonsense, and when everyone goes home, they will go in peace.” I snarled. The spirits looked at me, as if they were asking permission, but I said nothing, nor acknowledged their presence, so they took whatever they were going to do as a yes.
Though I don’t know why I thought of them as spirits… but they dragged his soul out his body and preceded to beat the absolute shit out of it. He screamed, and I watched showing no emotion, though I don’t think anyone else could see this… if they could I know they would have said something. But it was over quickly. A man as tall as my father appeared, in a black robe, and gave me a nod. With his hand raised high, a scythe with the name ‘Asanguis’ appeared, and reaped them all in one swoop. It was so swift it made the candles flicker.
The bastard was about to say something but was already dead and reaped. He choked on his own air, likely his body reacting now that it had no soul.
“Blasphemy!” Screamed the man who sat at his right.
“We have done nothing… what is this?” They all said looking at each other, but I could see what was happening…. he was being strangled by the mass of people no one could see, and those that could did nothing along with me. they all prayed prayers and laid blessings on him until he glowed bright, however it was done.
“It is likely the will of your god.” Said Kaiden. “It takes effort to perform magic so discrete…. And I don’t smell anything. I know you don’t either….”
He was dead, and the spirits left single file up the stairs. “I think his actions caught up with him….” I said quietly, feeling my brand tingle. The last time it felt like this was when I saved the fox.
The grand room was quiet a long time from my words, but also from what happened. “Then if there is accountability now for your actions, maybe you’ll think twice before doing whatever it was you all have been doing to offend even your own god.” Said the unicorn.
“Then… I suppose as the temporary standing chancellor, I Must honor the demands of these creatures.” There was an uproar.
“You must have poisoned him.” Said one of the other priests standing.
“I am Captain Sparkles, the Pure One.” Said the Unicorn. “I tell no lie. What happened here was likely god’s will. You were audited, and he was the last to be judged… The Law did not judge him, but the Light did.”
“…. He doesn’t like what we do.” he said sitting back down, and the Captain nodded.
“No, now leave these wolves in peace.” He said with a grumble. The Officers left up the stairs, leaving me and Kaiden to go up last. We were the strongest, and the closest to the enemy. It was done to protect them just in case someone got the idea to attack anyway.
“Bryson you smell really dark.” Said Kaiden as we went up last. “Also nice touch with the whole black fire thing.”
“It’s who I am. I can’t help it anymore than having horns.” I mumbled.
“You remind me of the stories I didn’t share that grandfather told me. The High King’s crown floats between his horns, and when it does calamity follows.”
“I’ll call you when we get on the road.” I said leaving this place. He nodded, getting into his Camaro, while I got in my Nissan. He called me impatiently.
“Ok we’re on the road. Spill it. You did that didn’t you?” He said amused. I was quiet a while.
“The spirits of those they persecuted did. I watched them strangle him, drag his soul out his body and beat the shit out of it before they were reaped.” I said quietly. “They got revenge for being killed likely by his order.”
“Serves him right then. I hope he burns in hell.” He grumbled.
“He will, as with the rest of them. They persecute the innocent, and I doubt the Horned One will take that sitting down.”
