“You have two seconds to explain yourself.” Bryson snarled with crossed arms.

“I’m the shadow Obsidian, Warrior Commander of the ShadowMoon. I was commanded by my Alpha and the King to aid you.” He said holding his hands up in defense. “I think I scared your little ones coming out the shadows. I apologize your grace.” He bowed.

“Grandpa told us of you, but really you shouldn’t have done that. You almost got yourself killed.” I grumbled, holding my pups who eyed him suspiciously.

“Again, I apologize, I thought it would impress you.” He admitted. He waved his hand and four more of them materialized behind him. “We are only here to serve, protect, and kill whoever you wish.” He was a dark gray furred wolf with one blue eye and one brown… they all had some form of miss matched eye combination. It was some kind of ritual they did to get that way. He and his other four wolves were from a pack of assassins that served the crown and his council.

“Then for now all of you meet me in Alpha’s office. I have jobs for you.” I said thinking of what Jerold warned.

They bowed, leaving to go in, and Caleb pursed his lips. “At least the Shadows in me and Dad’s pack knock.” He grumbled.

“We were out here to tell you we’re taking up your offer. There’d be more eyes and ears in Crimson and Charred, but honestly I feel… safe here.” Said Mini, holding her stomach.

“Good. Let’s go inside.” I smiled, but they seemed to be stalling.

“Maybe Bryson would like to tell me of his experience as the Third Seat’s mate.” Said Caleb.

“I have much to tell you and Kaiden later. I know the King has told you nothing.” Said Bryson. I frowned at him a little that he so readily wanted to tell Caleb… but we would speak later.

“Why not take the pups to the park? The air would be good for them.” Suggested Mini. I didn’t know why she was purposefully keeping me out, but I would stop this.

“No, I want to go inside.” I complained.

“Ok…. But don’t be mad.” She warned, and I walked past her, but Caleb chuckled.

I turned the knob, and I crossed my arms. There was a large, but finished party, even a makeshift banner that said “Congratulations Honored Third”, but it seemed most of everyone was already drunk and sleeping. Any who weren’t were trying desperately to hobble up stairs, or out the back, but it was too late.

“…Lady… Wildflower let’s go upstairs. Hopefully Beta isn’t like this too.” He smiled. I held the pups, who wanted to play, but they could do that in our room.

No Want. Tyson had his tiny fur bristled, growling at the Shadows, but they all chuckled at his tiny puffed fluff. Out of curiosity, I put him on the floor, and he stood in front of me. He was completely afraid, but they stood behind him, and he put his head low, tail up.

“We’ll just leave your highness. I don’t want to be murdered by your mate.” He pointed to Bryson’s black eyes. He snorted steam, looking intimidating with his horns out.

“Just pick among yourselves who stays, and I want the Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth seat investigated. They were Brutus’s allies, so I know they scheme.” I grumbled.

“They likely think you’re overconfident, as your mate is an Old One. Rica, Opal, and Marsh will go investigate those seats while me and Topaz will stay.” He commanded and the others nodded. “Any other requests?’ He asked while he and his partner stood as well, because the pups were still upset.

“Why don’t my babies like you?” I asked.

He smiled. “Well we are trained from the time we could walk to kill your grace. They know we aren’t friends. We’re tools. Use us as your hammer and chisel to shape your rein.” He said with a bow, walking around us, dodging a snap from Tyson.

“I would be more worried if they liked us.” Joked one, but he stayed his distance. It was traditional to shake wrists, but he wouldn’t come near if he wanted to keep his shoes.

He never snapped at anyone before…..

No. He said stomping his little feet. He was ‘protecting’ me. and after Bryson closed the door, he locked it.

Papa no want. Kaizen growled and the others followed. They complained at the door for a minute while my mate’s expression became steeled. Mine was too… they really didn’t like them.

“I really don’t like that the pups don’t trust them….” he said looking out the window. He sat in his chair, getting toys for them to play with so they could calm down. They didn’t want to be held or soothed because they were independent minded.

“They smelled off too… Like there was something wrong with them.” I mumbled.

“It’s why I don’t trust them.” He mumbled. “For now… if they have information to keep you safe, so be it.”

The pups settled down after a little while, though I didn’t know why my mate chose not to tell me whatever it was that was wrong. He sat there silently at his desk, putting Kaizen on the table, because Tyson and Grace wanted to playfight. They were loud and rough strangely enough, but Grace held her own.

One of the things I had learned was not to interfere. They were still small, though growing. I swear they were a little bigger today than they were a week ago, but it could have been my imagination. They weren’t hurting each other, and they had to learn how to get along.

“After I send off this to Beta Martini, I’ll head off to the jail to deal with a fox shifter. Now that the pups are calm, I need you here…. I don’t trust this.” He mumbled.

“Bryson why didn’t you tell me that sooner?” I asked in curiosity.

“Right now, we have to deal with not only the Old Ones, but your new position…. And now the distrust everyone has in Me. I didn’t want to add a fox shifter spy to all that.” He said getting up.

“True…. But Bryson… You shouldn’t have to handle this alone…” I got up, hugging him as tightly as I could, but he glared looking out the window. He was still hiding something…. But I wouldn’t press him. Not yet. I would let him have time to decompress first.

“There are going to be some things I Must handle alone. Please trust me. I swear to you whatever happens, I will do what I must to preserve your life, as well as the pups.” He mumbled. He was telling the truth on that part….

“…. I hate that I say this… it’s so selfish…. “I hesitated, and he gave me the smallest nudge… He knew what I was going to say. “I know you wouldn’t turn to your father’s ways but if it meant you’d hold me like this a little longer….” I mumbled.

“You didn’t see how much he changed…” He walked out quietly closing the door…and I wondered what he meant by that.

He slowly let go of me, leaving the trail of sparks with him…. but I didn’t move from my spot until I heard him leave out the front door… Mini coming in was the only thing stopping me from scooping up the pups and following him.

“Can I talk to you?” She asked shyly, and I nodded. She was without Caleb, even locking the door. “I asked him to stay outside.” She mumbled.

I looked out the window to confirm him shifting with Bryson and Zack. Whatever they were out to do was probably dad’s favorite thing to do…. ‘Interrogation time’. There were certain things dad did to let me know early on he was pretty ruthless, and that was one of them.

“Go ahead.” I said with a smile, keeping that to myself.

“Um…” She looked at her hands. “I had weird dreams while you were gone.” She said quietly.

“The Horned One?” I asked.

“no… like How do I explain it?” She asked herself. “I felt like I was being taken somewhere but I woke up…so many hands grabbed me, tugging on me. Like I was being yanked by the light and the darkness because one place was so bright, but the other was a deep red… but the darkness won… It told me I was safe… What if something wants to take my baby?” She asked.

That sounded like the Lord of Light and Night… but the Horned One won because she’s Here. “Just…. Don’t leave the pack. It’s protected by the Fairy Queen as well as Bryson and the Horned One…. He may seem scary but he won’t hurt his son’s mate.” I said that with confidence.

“He revived you.” She said quietly.

“He protects my pups too… I don’t know what the Lord of Light will do to you or your baby…” I mumbled.

“I do. He probably meant to kill me. I feel so weak.” She whispered. “That dream was real I know it.”

“I believe you. While the men do their work, it’s time we did ours. I’m calling Heidi.” I mumbled.
