“It’s getting late; you go on ahead and do patrol Alex. I’m sure Bryson will be up soon.” I said with a smile.

“Even if he didn’t Luna; he probably needs the rest. He’s always up and running things without complaint. My guess is that he’s just really tired.” Said Alex, and he got up with Beta.

“I’ll stay in the packhouse just in case, and we can swap about midnight.” Said Zack over his shoulder. The pups were chasing each other in the office, but they followed me to the bedroom.

The sun was setting, but my mate’s eyes still did not open. I was more worried that I figured he was fine… even Glitter didn’t seem concerned. I was more concerned about those who would find out that he was asleep and try something. I stayed in there with him until it was time to make dinner, which was easy for my pups.

Raw was fine, but they did enjoy flavor. I went downstairs with them about seven, and they all carried their own food bowls. They started doing this after seeing it on a commercial, but I didn’t mind. They were young, happy babies of mine, even though if I called one of them that, they would complain.

I got some teriyaki sauce and pan-fried each of them a steak with some crisp green beans. I also put an egg in the sauce for their coat, and opened a can of soft carrots. They mixed well with the sauce too, but everything was in its own section in their bowls. It was human food that all of us could enjoy because it wasn’t greasy McDarrel’s, Hamburger Royalty or Blue Fortress. That kind of thing was a super rare treat.

[Mama I want more?] Asked Grace, and I gladly let her have some of her dad’s. I’d already put his food up, but instead of 4 steaks, he’d have 3.

[Me too!] said Tyson and Kaizen about the same time.

“Alright, but you get more veggies too.” I said sternly, and they complained, but that was the deal.

I cut the full boneless steak into thirds and each of them had another helping, along with a medium sized bone to gnaw on. They did that for about thirty minutes, after which they started to get sleepy.

With big yawns they followed me upstairs and I bathed them, dried them and put them in their room. They jumped on the bed, and curled up on each other. I got a book from grandpa to read to them, and they were still Very young for this, but they should know the old stories, but I wouldn’t pick anything too bad. It was a new one, one I hadn’t read, but the King insisted I read it anyway.

“I’m going to tell you guys the tale of Grendal, the First Wolf. He too was born only the wolf, like Grampy.” I said seeing them kind of perk up, but they were tired. “Long ago, the worlds beyond, the afterlife was unguarded, and unprotected. Anyone could go to the various places the living weren’t meant to go. This was well and good, until one mortal went too far. One was mindless, charging into the realm of the dead to find his mother. In life, the female human died of old age, but she had a supernatural son. One who was tall, powerful and always angry… the first minotaur.”

I blinked twice… wasn’t the first minotaur Jerold? I continued to read. It seemed this book had secrets that he felt I should know…

“The mindless beast tore the veil with his bare hands, making a new plain, the In-Between. It was created by Arviel, the Lord of Light, that the living be unable to bring so much chaos. But the damage had been done. He killed many angels, and demanded his dear mother. The Light was to smite the fiend, but the Moon Goddess saw pity on him, for his anger and rage was calmed by her blessing, and returning the woman to him. The mindless beast was given a mind and a man’s form, and he went upon his way… but another creature had been made to protect the new place that had been formed. Grendal, a wolf made of the moon’s dust and the Lady Moon’s tears was a mighty beast. He was twice the size of the beast.”

That didn’t make sense… I thought he said he was born during the time of Rome or the domestication of animals… but that didn’t make sense either, now that I thought of it… because the battle they had with the Tyrant King was way before that. I’m assuming that this had to have happened before that too…Was he lying about his age? I don’t see why he would…Then I read something.

‘The Bull for his own safety, and the safety of others had the secrets of this world deleted from his mind by me, the first mortal. I was born during the Divine Wars, yet I live because the need of my position. If you go looking for the secret things, the unknown things, you will find Me instead, and even the Horned One will not stop you from your fate, for I am here by his behest.’

-Naztakaar the Timeless One, Head Secret Keeper, son of the Lord of Time.

“Huh… neat.” I said hearing them snore. I don’t think they would remember anything I said, but I wouldn’t tell them this one. I don’t know if this was one meant for Them… it seems that it was meant for Me….

[Luna, we need Alpha at the holding cells but he isn’t answering.] Linked a Warrior.

[What’s wrong?] I asked.

[We have them in a cell now, but their leader clawed Warrior Natalie bad enough to go to the infirmary. We’re wondering should we just kill them.] He linked. Now that I thought of it, I recognized the wolf that linked me, it was Warrior Kurtis. Natalie was his mate.

I shook the absolute shit out my mate, but the only thing that happened was that his tattoo blinked a little faster. He was asleep, so there was no chance that he was getting up…

[I’m coming. I can interrogate from the other side of the bars.] I linked.

I got the keys to the Nissan, and drove. I was surprised that he didn’t link back ‘no don’t’ or something, but it didn’t matter. I was safe as long as They were in a cell and I was on the other side. I wouldn’t do anything dangerous like fighting. I had pups to come home to.

I parked, and went inside the county jail. No one was really in there except the rogues. They were a scruffy band of 2 very powerful males. I was given a chair to sit, and I pulled it in front of them.

The tallest male looked and smelled honestly about as strong, maybe stronger than Beta…the other male was definitely about equal to Zack. The male with a shiny silver hair and dark gray eyes looked at me with disgust, but he looked rugged. It reminded me of Bryson’s passive facial expression…. So maybe he wasn’t rude. The other man looked a little younger, but his dull gray hair faded to black. He held the same eye color of gray, and I wondered were they related.

The glare he held upset the Warriors, but I would still try. He smelled feral, like he’d been out in the wild a long time, but his son’s body posture and scent was normal.

“It’s late, but there’s no reason not to be civil. I am Luna Isabelle Charred, the Charred One, Third Seat of the High Council.” I said seeing the strongest one’s expression be unmoved, but the other looked nervous. “Tell me your name and your story if you wish to join the pack.”

“I am Oskeen, son to Orekeen, and we seek asylum. My story is that I too was born a Lycan like my father, and for it we never got along…. I am a rarity among a rarity, and for it I have no wolf…. I and my instincts are one and the same, but even still, I found my mate. She was Jang’s pack, but she behaved nothing like him. I had my son here, and all was well and good until I found out the things he did with Brutus.”

He paused. “He thought I would go to the king, so at first he held my Omega mate hostage… but then that wasn’t enough... After Brutus died he became more insane. He promised me that if I left he wouldn’t kill her… so I did like a Fool. But then he did kill her along with all my pups save my Omega son here, knowing that that would make me lose my mind, and by the time I came back, the only one left of my children was Iskkar…. He was wandering in the woods cold and banished…. I tore that pack apart until he cheated with silver during our fight… ” He motioned his son and he gingerly waved.

He said nothing, and his father spoke for him.

“I do not know what tortures they’d done to my son, but he is all I have left. I tried driving, but we were attacked, so I’ve had to watch him in the wilds…. He killed my mate because I was his elder, and I grew Tired of his Games. There is no loyalty there… they are wolves living together, but they are no Pack.” He said with authority.

“Your tone is too rude.” Growled Warrior Binnnigan the usual prison guard.

“You will show Luna respect.” Growled another warrior, and he growled back.

“It’s bothersome enough that I kneel. Do not take what little honor I have.” He scoffed.

“I see no kneel, only attitude.” I growled. He reluctantly lowered his head. This man is going to die when Bryson gets up.

“I am a bull Lycan. My language is different…. We are a different species.” He sighed annoyed. “In my blood is only rage…. Your mate would understand this. Being a wolf is a blessing, but being a twice-made Lycan is a Curse.”

“Your mental state still does not excuse your actions, but I will take this into consideration.” I said relaxing a bit.

“I’m inclined to think it does… I am not like your people Princess.” He bowed. “I would ask for aid, but I know I will not make it to the King alive. They think I’ll waste my time telling their dirty dealings.”

“…. You behave nothing like your father.” I mumbled, and he shook his head.

“He was aged to a decrepit old man by offending one strong enough to do that to him; I remain in my prime; I’m only 4,800. With these bare hands I will crush the hands of your enemies; if I wished true violence, I would have killed all those who restrained me.” He said with a proud growl.

“What of your oath with Jang?” I asked and he was silent.

“I gave them no oath. He was too Weak, but I smell your mate on you…” he growled. “That is True power a man can be proud to kneel to.” His claws grew to the length of a finger, and with it, he cut his palm like you would with a knife. “I swear on my hide, blood, and bone that I want nothing more than to serve the Old One. I swear you will never see me unless you wish, and in exchange I will die for whatever cause you give.”

I stood. “I understand your message, but it is too aggressive.” I snarled. He looked frustrated.

“I’ve been in the wild since a little after Brutus was killed. I finally now get what’s left of my family, only to find out he killed my mate…. I am a bit feral… that is the fate of lycans who lose their mate…It is why I didn’t just retire in a human town… I am unable to. If you like, take my son. He’s only a wolf… I wouldn’t mind lingering on the edge at a campsite… but take my blood.” It was now that he started to sound more like a pack wolf.

“…. I’ll talk to Bryson in the morning. In the meantime, give them something to eat.” I said leaving.

“I know I am a burden; it is why I will Gladly leave if that is your wish… just allow me to stay at the edge of your border and see my son every once in a while.” He said looking angrily at his fist.

“Why does your son not speak for himself?” I asked.

The man opened his mouth, and there was no tongue. “He was born unable to link… this is what I came home to.” He growled.
