The Prisoner’s Princess Chapter 122
Isabelle
It had been three days since the execution of Brutus’s line save his daughters, and there was peace again. I was filling out paperwork before dawn since I was the Third Seat, but thankfully I was almost done with it. I would have my hands full today, since I would also deal with a human client at the lumbar yard for more human interaction. I had little expectation that he wouldn’t be some rich, rude, and arrogant man since that all I seemed to encounter… but as the woman who sits at the King’s left, I was his voice. I would have to deal with nearly every race, including humans should he ask of it, and I wanted the practice.
Also, Bryson could not leave Mini’s side since I knew better. I didn’t think she’d pup with the moon, just as I didn’t, so for her sake I would go.
“I’m done with the report Finally. I’ll be back in an hour.” I said logging out.
“I still don’t like this.” Said my mate, and there was silence if not for the pups…. We were in our office while the pups played with Mini. She’d found out that they could chew on tough dried sinew and jerky, as they could activate their power so soon. It wasn’t much, but it was enough that they could burn plastic.
“You promised I could.” I grumbled, and he crossed his arms. “I have to have more experience with humans too… plus you’re needed here. You can’t go, we can’t reschedule, and more importantly, I know I can do this.”
“That human has a old mentality toward women.” He warned.
“I already figured that. You won’t convince me otherwise.” I said holding both his hands. He looked down on me, before his stern gaze softened.
“…. Just be careful.” He said caving in, and I kissed him on the cheek.
“You know I will. I already arranged for a full escort along with shadows keeping watch. And don’t forget that human weapons like guns can’t work within the border.” I mumbled, and he grumbled confirmation in wolf.
We’d planned that I could leave and do pack business for him while he watched Mini. She would pup this moon, but it was only half full, so she had plenty of time before that happened if I was wrong….
Being the Third Seat also meant that I truly would have to deal with different creatures. As grandfather’s Gamma, allot was expected of me, including diplomatic trips. Being the King’s voice was pretty much my job, along with maintaining and creating alliances for the crown’s benefit…. Which also meant I would have to deal with Brutus’s former contacts sooner or later. I wanted the practice.
I typed a proposal to the King to skip the next meeting, as Mini’s pup would likely be born by then and I wanted to be there for her. Their pack was technically ready, but we all thought it would be best not to move her until she had her pup. It was sent back approved immediately, likely from grandma, as she handled this kind of thing as Luna. It was 5am here, and they had an hour time difference, so they were up. My mate yawned with a growl at the end, but the pups didn’t seem to even want a nap. They played all night with their papa, since he stayed up all night, and they had as of yet to actually go to bed.
My mate was grumpy from the lack of sleep three nights in a row, trying to console my brother. He’d offered Caleb the night watch since he hadn’t slept three days, and he was beginning to act a little crazier than usual. Mini being pregnant made him alert, and she was only five and a half months along. There was still another few weeks of this, so Caleb needed to chill since his craziness was starting to leave Bryson sleep deprived… but I knew my brother. It wasn’t happening.
“Isabelle, can you pass me the reports for yesterday? Beta Martini sent it to you by accident again.” Bryson yawned. He’d been keeping things from me, but the notes Martini sent weren’t it… He felt stronger, so possibly he was keeping that he was training or something from me, but that didn’t make sense. He hadn’t worked out at all that I’d seen, but that didn’t mean he didn’t somehow find the time…
“I think he does that every once in a while to keep me posted too.” I said with a small smile. I forwarded him the report. All was well, but they needed another of my mate’s t-shirts to mark the territory. His scent had faded a bit because of the rain yesterday. No one was dumb enough to try anything since now he truly smelled as an old one. It also helped that with the shirts rubbed on trees, that it would smell as if he were in one of our more distant packs. This also kept Rouges away… the rumor was that the King of the Forest could teleport to his packs of all things.
At least that was the plan. He hadn’t had any challenges in a while, and I wasn’t worried anyway. The sun wasn’t up, and the moon would be half-full tonight. She shined brightly, casting her golden hues of a setting moon in the window while my mate drank his coffee.
He yawned. “If he is that’s fine, but I don’t like the delay. I’ve read everyone else’s.” He complained.
“Why don’t you get at least a nap?” I asked and he shook his head.
“I am Alpha. I protect you lot, and I won’t have any Rouges getting ideas while I’m sleeping.” He said defensively.
“Bryson I’ll let you know if we need you. You know I will. Sleep. You look about ready to pass out at your desk.” I said as a joke, but he turned off his monitor screen.
“That’s not a bad idea.” He said taking off his shirt and using it as a pillow. “Mini wake me if anything changes. Also lock the door once Isabelle leaves.” He grumbled. I figured that was the best I’d get.
“Is it ok if I wake you up at your office hours?” She asked and he nodded.
I left for our room, getting ready, as they would be the first humans of the day starting at 7. We’d allowed some of them to work for us in the distribution center. Truck drivers delivering what aged wood we had were mostly human if we delt with human run companies. We tried to reserve Omegas for other supernatural creatures. It made everyone more comfortable, and kept the interactions between mortals and wolves down.
I’d chosen a black hoodie and dark blue jeans along with a pair of glasses made by elves. These tented shades would make me look a little strange since I would be in a heavily forested shady area, but at least to a human, my eyes would be a human brown, instead of the strange honey yellow that didn’t exist with their people.
No one had made a sound downstairs, even though the office door was closed. People saw the efforts he was taking, protecting the pack, his family, and still carrying out duties that required him to be up and out, dealing with humans. It would be my turn to do that, and when he woke up, I had already planned on taking the pups off Mini’s hands so she could have a break. She was only doing it for experience with small ones, but I was confident she didn’t need it.
These men were only here to talk with us about an already established account. I went into the office one last time to give everything a once over and gave my sleepy mate a kiss before taking Warrior Kat with me. They were unarmed humans, there was no need to worry about what they could do, as even if they had weapons, it wouldn’t work with the spells on the land.
It was the only reason why Bryson would let me leave in the first place. She was in a formal pants suit, with Aviator shades on. “My Lady.” She said stiffly, and we both shared a smile.
“Come on before Bryson changes his mind.” I gestured, and we went to the key wall…. We’d planned this from the start, but my mate didn’t know that. He also didn’t know we wanted to go in style. Nothing was wrong with his car, it’s just his other ones literally sat there.
“Please Please tell me I get to drive one of Alpha’s fast cars.” She giggled, and I took the keys of the black and red flamed Challenger. The damn thing looked new since pack mechanics loved tinkering with his cars to keep them in working order. No one had really used it though since Chris, but no one touched it because it was now Bryson’s.
“Put it back!” He yelled, and I grumbled, taking the Nissan instead.
“Damn it…” She grumbled, and I did with her. When she backed out the garage, the red sunrise thankfully had the sun’s rays a little dimmer than usual, which made it pleasant to look at the pack before we began to get to the outskirts. The drive was fine enough, and the trees looked healthier than even a few months ago. The new guardian of the forest did his job well, and it seemed so long as whatever tree was allowed to stand and had some life still left in it, he could work his magic and fix things.
When we got to the forest office, the man and someone else were just arriving as well. Kat got out the car, letting me out, and strolled intimidatingly behind me with her hands behind her back. She was actually taller than the humans that came to meet by a full head and shoulders, but that wasn’t a surprise.
Wolves in general were bigger than them. It was me who was the exception being so short. The Warriors that met with us were none other than the Warrior Commander, Paul, and Warrior Commander Welds, his assistant from BlackMoon on their own, without prompt. He’d driven all the way from another pack to make sure I was guarded, and it seemed to intimidate the human that the wife of a simple lumber yard owner had a detail.
“Good afternoon.” Said a white-headed, grizzled, grumpy man shaking my hand. “I’m Mr. Fairland, and this is my assistant, Marguerite. I was hoping to see the man of the house, but I don’t have time for another meeting. I assume you understand sweetheart.” He motioned a female secretary that came out another car. “That’s Marguerite obviously.” He said dismissively, making my detail cringe. And I kept my patience.
“I’m Isabelle Charred, Bryson’s wife. He’s a little under the weather right now, but I’m his secretary, so I already know about the invoices.” I beamed. He seemed a little reluctant to shake my hand, but he did out of curtesy. It took everything I had not to break his hand or heat my claws to turn his fingers to ash…. or growl.
