Bryson

Isabelle likely stayed up all night, and I couldn’t blame her. The smell of rot, cleaner, darkness, and rage wafted throughout the castle like a draft. The pups yawned, wagging their little tails, wanting to go to the potty, and I would take them. I would do that, then wash the old blood off my back later when my mate woke. I would give her all the time she needed… because I felt like less of a man. I was knocked out when she needed me… and I was thankful for the fact that I was seen as blood by my brothers.

I abandoned her… I don’t know what happened while I was out… I Don’t know why I smelled so much stress off her, but I couldn’t wake her to find out why the scent lingered on her clothes like that. She wasn’t even in pajamas… she was still wearing what she had yesterday. My horns would not retract when I tried, and I figured it was because I couldn’t relax. I left the door closed, but there was the lightest peck on the door.

An Omega, held three plates of raw while another held what looked like pankakes. I took it all, and they bowed as low as they could go. I could hear them and their fear. I was an Old One to them…. It seemed I really wasn’t identified by my own people anymore… This wasn’t the first time.

“My lord, we give you meat from the personal larder of the King. We serve a rare breed of elk from the Netherlands.” She mumbled.

“I don’t need anything like that in the future. Regular venison is fine.” I said placing the plate on a night stand, keeping it from a small sea of hungry pups.

“Oh forgive us your highness.” She said backing away, and I shook my head.

“Alpha Bryson is fine. I don’t need special meat, or special treatment. I am not that kind of Alpha.” I said quietly, but they left, leaving me with a bow.

Want! Yipped Kaizen, sitting at my feet, wagging his small tail.

I handed them small bits, which let them eat a little slower than usual. I had a small bowl, and let them sip from the bathroom tap.

They would be with me today, since it seemed my mate was out. I would not leave her though. I did not have any trust in any of the residents of this pack.

They played, while I called my Beta. He was up, and his pups were at school or in daycare.

“Morning Alpha.” He said formally.

“Am I missing anything?” I asked, and he hesitated.

“Luna Minetta and Alpha Caleb are here with King Noah… and one of his gaurds found an unauthorized shifter trying to get in.” He said very quietly.

“What kind?”

“You’re not going to believe this. A fucking gray fox.”

“If it’s got more than one tail kill it. If not, put in in solitary and have its arms and legs bound.” I said without hesitation. They tended to be loners, but they were always trouble.

We were heading home after being there only a few days, but I was honestly glad. That place taxed my mate, as he was stressed out the entire time. He wouldn’t tell me what he’d seen while he was passed out, but the doctors told me he was just tired. They told me that his vitals were fine, but I still remember the look on grandfather’s face… He knew.

Whatever it was, he would tell me…. “Izzy.” Said Uncle Jerold. “Bryson’s asleep next to you, let him rest, hmm?” He said with a raised brow.

“He slept like we used to when we were in the wild.” I mumbled, feeling a little guilty.

“Good. Never let your guard down there. It isn’t safe. Ash may be king, but it won’t stop them from being upset about you ruling over them…or what happened.” he mumbled. “Don’t forget; no matter how sweetly they grin in your face, you killed their leader in crime. They will suspect you to investigate them, and disrupt their corrupted ways. Also…. The old ones will not harm Bryson. He holds his father’s mark on his bellybutton… but I don’t know what they will do to You… or even the pups. They may try to take them.” he mumbled. “This does not leave this plane…. Me and the other kings will handle this.”

“I know. It’s why grandpa sent Shadow Warriors to the pack already.” I said with a small smile. They were a pack of wolves dedicated to serving the royal family and the council. I had talked with their Alpha on the phone, but not for long. It was basically just to tell me that they would only answer only to me and Bryson.

“I still want you to be on guard. If you die, this world burns. I hope you know that. As it stands your mate is at the threshold of who he was born to be, but something as traumatic as loosing a mate would easily shift him from neutrality to viciousness.” He warned with crossed arms.

“Is that what he won’t tell me?” I asked and he nodded.

“He probably doesn’t know how to word it. How do you tell your loved one you’re becoming an Old One?” He said with a smile.

I sniffed him. He only smelled the same but stronger to me. “I don’t notice anything….” I mumbled.

“I do. He isn’t my mate.” Said Jerold with a chuckle. “I also see his father finally branded him like his brother too.” He said scratching his chin. “He doesn’t feel evil though, just dark because of what he is if that makes sense.”

“What about the pups?” I asked looking at them sleep soundly in their father’s lap.

“They smell the same. They’re already Old Ones with Charred powers; if we just keep raising them right, they’ll be fine.” He nodded firmly, and the plane was ready to land. We buckled up, and thankfully the pups didn’t protest too much being put in a pet bag because they were still tried. I let them play as long as they wanted last night… mostly because I wasn’t tired. Thinking your mate’s dead would do that for you. Even now I still hadn’t, but I would tonight.

When he laid there motionless…. I felt like I did all over again. Stressed, panicked, and lonely…

“I hear you little mate.” Said Bryson tenderly. He didn’t care if humans would see. He kissed me on the forehead. “I’m not going anywhere. All the time I have with you now is all I’ll have… I don’t intend on leaving anytime soon.” He smiled.

“Good….” I yawned. Lady Damnit. “If you do I’ll make sure you never hear the end of it.” I stood on tiptoe and he leaned down to share a quick kiss before getting in the car together. Uncle Jerold was picked up by the minitour that helped feed the pups, Officer Jackson. The way he bowed to Jerold was like how others bowed to grandpa.

“I can’t wait to get home.” He said taking my free hand and walking to the car that was left for us. It was a black SUV, and I held the pups while Bryson drove. The pups slept the whole ride, and I wanted to share with my mate what Jerold told me… but I wondered would it upset him. He wasn’t entirely happy with talking about this kind of stuff.

“I can’t either.” I finally said. “Bryson do you know you’re changing?” I asked.

“For a while…. Months ago. I accidently killed the Warrior who shot me. If anything I should have known well before that, but thankfully, I have you.” he said putting his hand on my leg, rubbing it gently.

“And I’ll always be there for you.” I smiled, but he didn’t.

“I know wildflower.” He looked at the road, and I looked down.

“Sorry I ruined your mood.” I mumbled but he chuckled.

“No you didn’t. I just remembered I didn’t tell Zackery about forwarding paperwork so I could deal with it. There’s going to be about three days of unread disputes and such from the pack on my desk.” He chuckled. I couldn’t tell if he was lying, but I dropped it. His smile was what I wanted, and it was what I got.

We arrived home, and I was glad to see that Mini and Caleb had stayed. They were outside waving at us, and when I got out, I got hugged by them both. The pups were roused from the long nap, and I let them out.

They ran in big circles but soon they screamed running to me, and I growled, while Bryson was already about to get whoever it was. “Whoa there! I come in peace!” Said a stranger holding his hands up. Bryson was right in front of him, about a second from most likely killing him, but I didn’t know if he should have. This man smelled off. Like a werewolf but … not?
