Bryson

Three days left until the full moon…. Three. My mate slept in her old room. I paced, pulling my hair in the living room, where her mother made me tea. I had finished what I needed to do for my pack, and the King of Wolves, Unicorns, Elves, and the Battle Bull were all coming, or here. What if they kill my mate? Would I be able to stop any of them? Would they listen to me? I am outcast no matter how much I try to change… would it matter she was the son of a Prince? Would it matter that I am the Spawn of the Adversary….

“Ahem.” Said the little cheery man called Noah.

“If it is not news of my mate. I do not wish to hear anything from you, little man.” I said in annoyance.

“I bring news of the kings and tea.” He handed me a cup. I could smell the sedative in it. I growled at him.

“Look, it’s Gabriel’s Whisper. It won’t knock you out, but it will calm you.” He said taking a sip. “I’m human though, so any more than that and I will pass out.” He placed it in my hand, and I reluctantly sipped.

“So let me guess, the angel whispered to it.” I said sarcastically, and he nodded. The medicine he gave me calmed me, and I my wolf for the first time in two days, laid down in my mind.

“Actually, he was tasked by the Lord of Light to plant it. He watched it grow, only for it to wither because he forgot to water it. He whispered life into it by using his own blood to bring it back. It springs up wherever dead bodies are found, as well as near rivers.” He said sipping his tea.

“I could eat you.” I warned.

“You won’t. You like me.” He said confidently with a smile. I growled at him. Who was he to think I was his friend? I had no friends. He patted my head and scratched the base of my horns. Holy shit did it feel good, and I should have stopped him, but I melted into the couch. My head was somehow in his lap, and I hope no one saw me like this.

“This means nothing.” I hissed. He giggled, pressing his finger behind my ear in little circles. I prayed to the lady he didn’t teach this to my mate, because as much as I wanted to get up, Ven was tamed like a damn puppy.

“Mmhmm. Now rest friend. If you’re all pissed and disrespectful, you won’t make your case to the high kings easy. They like me, but I’m on the Queen’s Council, I hold a place.” He chuckled. I did with him.

“Thank you little human. I’m glad I didn’t eat you.” I yawned with a stretch and he laughed.

“You wouldn’t have. I don’t taste human.” He scratched my shoulders and I started to fall asleep.

I woke up with a blanket on me and one of Isabelle’s unicorns under my arms. “What the fuck Noah?!” I growled, looking around for the little man, but he was with the council, who now looked at me with amusement.

And my mate saw too… Lady damnit.

“Bryson did you sleep well?” Asked my mate quietly. She seemed concerned that I was upset, but really, I wasn’t. I felt tired but relaxed.

“I don’t know what that little human did to me, but I feel like I slept a full 8 hours. And why does this thing smell so good?” On closer inspection the little toy seemed to be made of real fur. I sat up, shaking my head, hearing the birds chirp.

“You did, good morning pup.” Said the Wolf King. I don’t think I’d ever seen him smile, but he looked like he was a breath away from laughing. The female next to him must have been the Queen, as she looked like Kaiden’s sister except for the hair color.

I also saw a woman with light blue glittering hair holding hands with a man with no flaws in his features. He was an elf.

“We all just got here, why don’t we sit at the dining room table and discuss this after you freshen up?” Offered the woman, who I now realized smelled like Isabelle’s toys.

-----Isabelle-----

I think I had made King Sagrinal, the Elf King, jealous. I was hugging his mate more than he had a chance to, and she patted my head. She was never able to be marked by him, as the Church didn’t recognize it, but she was. They would not have accepted her pups, yet she had five. I even got to meet two of them a few times growing up. This was because she was the Speaker for the Supernatural Creatures, the only one recognized by the mortals. Unicorns are pure, and she was a key figure in maintaining the fragile treaty between us.

“Little one, you are so very young, nearly a foal yourself. My mate, you will have me in your embrace soon. Worry not.” She said sweetly. The compassion I felt through her made me feel like I was a little pup again, hiding in my big sister’s room with Caleb during a storm. She was the scent I clung to almost more than mom’s. She held a special place in my heart. She patted my head, and allowed this disrespectful nonsense until my mate came back down, in a nice dress shirt, and his horns put away.

“Please, you may be comfortable here, sit with us at the table near your mate.” Said Jerold, who had his out. Queen Sky released her horn as well as her wings. She turned the chair around so she could straddle it. my mate complied, but he picked me up, prying me off of the queen so I could sit in his lap. Her mate immediately grabbed her, and pulled her out of reach like he had never seen her before in his life.

“Good we may begin now.” Said grandpa. “As the Center Seat of Kings, I motion the pardon of the unborn on the grounds of retaliation from the gods themselves. I have had dreams of my grandmother’s tears. She is unhappy that her children of the night fight.” He was calm only in words. He felt like Bryson did before he got rest yesterday. It was so bad I had to pretend to be asleep to calm him down that I was fine.

“The Dark God’s most powerful asset has already been subdued, the others have been defeated.” Mentioned King Sagrinal. He was right. I heard all the stories of the Old Ones straight from the kings themselves growing up.

“No, You all are wrong. One sits at the table with you, only he is too young.” Said Orek. I thought he had left, but he was good at keeping a low profile.

“You have no place here.” Hissed the elf king, holding to his mate a little harder.

“I really don’t care. I Must speak the truth…Bryson is a true beast. You who sit at this table knows what that truly means. He is also true blood of the Horned One, not just one blessed by him. He is a fledgling Old One. All he needs is a trigger, and he will snap, becoming the Horned Wolf, the one entity that no one ever found.” He said, glaring at the kings. “But that is not a bad thing. I am here to vouch for him, though I must speak all the truth, not just the pretty parts.”

“It was because he didn’t exist yet.” Whispered my grandmother. “My mate what have you done.” She glared at him.

“I could not see my blood unhappy. If the Goddess gave him a soulmate, then she deemed him worthy of this world.” He said quietly, and there was silence in the packhouse.

“She is the only thing in this world I care for. That and the pack I adopted to give her the happiness and comfort she deserves.” Said Bryson.

“If the Horned One touches her before they are born, they will be mindless beasts.” Said Queen Sky, and Orek shook his head.

“Look at what your words do.” He pointed at Bryson, and he was livid. His eyes were like the man in my dreams, and he became covered in tattoos. He sprouted fur along his neck down his back, and his tail had sprung out, hitting the floor. He thought they would kill me, and I could hear his thoughts very clearly.

Kill.

That was it. He only thought one word, and I knew if I wasn’t in his arms, he would challenge these impossibly powerful nobles at the table. He had no chance, but he would try.

“Ven, let Bryson have back control.” I demanded gently, and he only snarled a demonic grumble. It sounded nothing like a wolf, and more like something out of Strangest Things.

“I best be off, don’t want to make my grandkids worry.” He said with a nod of respect and left us to die.

“No. Do not be afraid little mate.” He snarled, and I felt a pain in my stomach. I ignored it until it felt like I got punched.

“She’s gone into labor.” Said all the women in the room at the same time. My water broke on my mate’s lap, and I didn’t know what caused it, but I was early. The moon wasn’t going to be full for two more days, and I didn’t know what that would mean if I didn’t have them then.

He didn’t want to let me go, but I needed to get to the birthing room at the hospital. “Ven, you have to let them take me, you can come, but I can’t stay here, I’ll die.” I warned, holding in a scream. This wasn’t normal; I shouldn’t feel this much pain.

I smelled blood.
