Venerable

He smelled of fear, though his stance was cocky. He knew I would not kill him tonight, but if I had my way, I would kill him the moment the sun rose tomorrow.

“Come to Gloat?” He said sitting tall on the prison bed, though he became pale on seeing the King behind me.

“What have you done Jang?” He sneered.

He bowed. “My king… my prince…. I know I am guilty but please pardon me.”

“You Knew of the High Queen’s birth, you encouraged Grisham and his pups to call the Church, and that makes you a threat to not only my Alpha, but the Crown as well. As Brutus’s confidant, you share his guilt as well.” Said Obsidian.

I could see the red light from my eyes cast shadows on the small cell. I snorted steam, and I could feel the crown atop my head appear brighter, flickering as a candle since my anger gave it more energy.

“You are a Fool. Did you not see what my brother did when we were lashed, or did you cower in a corner while your pack mates were thrown into walls, and melted into puddles?” I said with my arms crossed.

“My blood speaks truth. Had their little plot worked, the King of your King would have awakened… and no one would have been able to stop him.” The King growled.

“I want to know how you knew Mini was pregnant?” I demanded.

“I overheard the Fifth Seat and his mate while at the castle. They were in their office with their door closed, even magic placed on the door to muffle noise, but I was already snooping to see if they were attempting to do me as you did Brutus…. I have many enemies… my paranoia got the better of me.” He said telling the truth. His wolf complied to my command. He knew I was not one to play games with.

“You ease dropped.” I said flatly.

“… Yes, I did. I know I cannot lie to the King, nor one who holds a crown made of Hell’s flames.”

“Why would you do this?” asked Ashital.

“Your majesty, next to you is the third largest threat to the entire realm… I remember the devastation…. I remember seeing an entire country Disappear with a clap of his hand, a foot away from me to prove a point…. He Must stay aslee-” He was cut off.

“I understand your fear Jang, but I cannot leave this unaccounted for. You betrayed me, your king, but even worse, you tried to Cheat My King… and I do not feel sorry for what he will do to you.-” He was cut off.

“Your majesty please!” He begged on deaf ears.

“You tried to take from him.” He said leaving.

“Your majesty, surely you can see reason?!” He yelled, but the chuckle from Ashital told me more than what he said.

“Even if Harmony was not my child, I would still hand you over. I hope it was worth it.” He said as the door closed.

“What do you mean by that?” I asked angrily.

“If you wish to watch, go ahead, but I want no part of this…. The Tyrant enjoys blood sport more than any Beast.” He said on the other side of the door, but I could hear him clearly.

He tapped his feet on the ground three times, then he came back in.

I believe he’d done that because grass conducted the summoning better. He did not stomp; his heel did not leave the ground. He kneeled on bended knee as the moon’s light became red, and from the ground, my brother appeared.

He was taller than me by a full head and shoulders, but that was not what intimidated me. He was see-through, but even as only a specter I could tell he was strong enough to bring ruin to this world.

“Wolf.” He said to Ashital, and that was the first time I’d seen one I viewed as my better unable to lift his gaze from the floor.

“I offer you this night a sacrifice of he who conspired to take what is yours.” He motioned his hand to Jang, and Xaxas crossed his arms.

“Where are the others?” he demanded.

“They already sleep in the ground.” He responded referring to Brutus and his kin.

“No. Where is his pack?” He asked. “Where are the other packs that conspired with him?” He said glaring at the man.

It was now that Jang realized that he made a mistake. It was one that thousands would pay for.

I would not overrule my brother. It was His right. And I cannot lie. For Isabelle, had I known how to use my power, none would breathe either.

Ashital hesitated, and for the first time since I’d ever known of him… he smelled of real fear.

“….Ohiya…. FrostMoon pack… OilMoon annexed them…. And TealMoon of Nebraski.” He said quietly.

“Asanguis.” He said waving his hand, and the soul of the other brother appeared.

“Brothers.” He bowed.

“Summon your scythe. Adorn your robes. And take this one. He will watch what I will do, and live with his punishment. And when you Do die, you will belong to Me.” He suddenly appeared behind him, grabbing him by the throat, and a burn shaped like weighted scales appeared on his neck.

The sign of father weighed more than the sign of the Sun…. He had been judged.

“Please… I can endure this… but not my mate…” He begged on choked breath.

“Stop worrying about your loved ones; you did not worry about them when you tried killing my mate. They will get the punishment you intended for my mate, and you will live in your home, empty. The only reason You will breathe is Punishment. There will be none left alive, save the grass and animals.”

Asanguis dawned a black robe and a scythe that reminded me of before electricity… One used for harvest, and worn from much use. Those were often the best. since those were the most well made, and the blade shimmered.

He screamed as all three of them disappeared into the night… I knew by his wording that by morning, however many lived in all those packs, not a single soul would be left except Jang and maybe the 14th seat….

He did not care of men, women, children, the weak, or the old.

And I felt only a modicum of remorse for the innocent, but in Tartaron, if they were Truly innocent, they would not have too bad of an afterlife.

Outside, Ashital said nothing, but he looked at his hands as if he were wondering what had he done. “You are right Venerable.” He said quietly. “Jang and Brutus…. They were My fault. Had I Been King, and simply killed them both all those thousands of years ago…”

“You would have broken your word.” I finished for him.

“FrostMoon…. Held four thousand souls after this year’s official census, OilMoon… Three thousand … TealMoon holds five… so many will die tonight… So many because I did not kill two wolves.” He mumbled.

“I have seen Tartaron with my own eyes. They even have ice according to Bryson. He will kill them, but they who are Truly innocent will not suffer under my father’s boot.” I said to reassure him. “They did what they wanted with the freedom they had, Now they must Literally pay the piper for their actions. Now they are surprised that Xaxas comes with flames in his eyes and fire in his belly.” I said looking at the red hue of the moon.

There was no more sparkling light from my mother’s realm. She too was angered, that I could feel. There is no telling how much energy she poured into making that child, and she could not do much to stop her life almost being taken.

“I remember Grisham and Keithelas… there was not a single thought in my mind when he tried to jump into the crowd… when he looked so bloodthirsty for my mate and Minetta… All I saw was Red. If it meant a thousand souls would die to keep her safe, I would do that for my mate. I would not flinch at ten thousand…. Xaxas does this that all know he is serious.” I grumbled.

“…. Maybe it is best to cull those souls.” He said quietly. “This information does not reach the ears of my mate… not yet. She has been so happy these past few days, ignorant to the ways of those wolves… without Brutus, Jang remained the same… He and his blood were just as Corrupt, though I could not stop them, as I swore, I swore on my blood and ties with the Goddess that I would not interfere. It was the biggest mistake I ever made as King, but I would do it again for Phillip and Susanna’s sake.” He said walking to the festivities. It was time.

/The bonfire’s ready!/ Linked my mate happily.

/Alright./ I replied.

I walked with him, and all heads were bowed. The dark night made my little mate beautiful, more so with the bonfire’s light dancing on her skin. She ran to take my hand, as it was my right to light the bonfire.

There was a large crowd. They were also silent, waiting for me to speak. They were afraid that I was out, or that I was angered, but I was not.

“Pack. We are here to venerate my mother, for through her we are greatly blessed. We are blessed with life, love, and duality. The blessing of the man makes us gentle… and the blessing of the wolf gives us strength. Though I am present most when she wears red, fear not her angered hue. It is not for us. I cut my hand on the ceremonial paper to give thanks…. And do not fear me. I am King of the Forest, and All who dwell in it, but my might are for your protection.”

I was handed a small piece a paper. Usually, people write on it before they put their blood, but I would just say mine. It was meant to be private anyway. “Thank you mother for returning me to my mate…. And forgive how childish I behaved. I love you… and I wish I could have been raised hearing your songs…. I wish you could Touch your grandchildren… but what I want, I cannot have, so instead accept my prayer for both me and my foolish human side.” I smiled. “And I also thank you father. I know you are probably planning something for her, and I hope it is a worthy gift for one so small and sweet.”

The fire flickered a deep red that matched the moon. Even though by now, the phase should have been over. She was defiantly still in the center of the sky, red as blood.

Isabelle added her silent prayer, and the fire changed to many colors. It was whiter and brighter than usual, and the licks of the flames jutted high into the sky over the trees.
