A/N: Sorry for not uploading so long! The High King’s Bride is uploaded and free to read for a little while. I love you guys and it is a struggle to maintain work, school, writing, editing, and all the while doing it alone. Is it an excuse…? Yea…. It is. But Am I being honest? Also Yes. I really am. If you’re reading this thank you for hanging in there with me. I focused so much energy into getting that book ready to go, that I neglected allot of the others… so I’m publishing what I have because you guys waited too long and deserve too much to wait like this.

I couldn’t tell her that in my dreams, I saw my father’s army. They were at the ready… miles and miles of demons ready to march through a grand stone arch of sculls, guarded by giant dragon headed soldiers… if it was real or not I didn’t know, but I could not do anything about it.

She didn’t know that if I thought she would die, I would join him, so he would be inclined to save her...I didn’t think he would do it a second time, as he’d already saved her once. For now… I didn’t have to. I didn’t have to side with any particular cause, making me the enemy of the other…but I had a feeling that could change.

“Alpha, I’m glad I found you.” Said Beta. He held under his arm a thick stack of paper, but walked with me. “The shifter awaits your judgment.” He bowed.

“Good. That’s where I was headed.” I said with a small nod.

“Wait for me.” Said Caleb, running not too far behind. “My mate wanted to talk with Izzy alone.”

“Let’s leave the paper in my trunk then?” I suggested. Ven was restless, and I figured why not. I stripped and put the documents away. I could read them later, the spy was more important. We shifted, and I was twice their size… When did I get this big? Regardless I put my clothes in my mouth.

I see now why Raakshir behaved. Common linked Caleb.

How does he see me? I asked.

Like an Old One, linked both of them at the same time.

About what I expected. I linked them both. I was no longer a wolf in the eyes of wolves, though I guess it wasn’t so bad. My scent would hopefully keep Rouges out. Even as we passed pack, many seemed upset to see me, as I was a bit much for them. I was probably about to the King’s shoulder right now…. And I wasn’t even three centuries yet.

I shifted, getting deep bows. “Alpha the fox had nothing really on him but some binoculars, a satchel of silver daggers, and a map of the area.” Said the warrior closest to me.

“Very well.” I said putting on pants. I left the shirt on the table at the door. I didn’t really care about that kind of thing right now. The Warrior who had the keys walked with us, and the moment the door was unlocked, the small shifter turned, trying to get past me, but I got it by the throat. There was fear and desperation in those eyes. They shifted to a small girl, who clawed at my hands.

Let me go! She squealed in fox dialect.

You are a threat assassin. I growled, and I kept my grip the way it was. I couldn’t add more to my hold, or I’d snap her small neck.

Please. She begged. Her high pitched scream hurt my ears. She sprouted a few extra tails, and I knew then she would not leave this jail alive, but I needed information.

“Maybe let her go?” Asked Caleb.

I ignored him, seeing a flash of her looking upset, while two men exchanged money, although one looked like her.

“Lock me in with her.” I commanded, walking inside, and releasing her after they reluctantly did so. No one really questioned me, and I had to be careful of that… It felt a little easy to become a monster.

On her hands and knees she took greedy gasps of breath, looking at me in terror. I sat on the bed and let her stay in the corner. I held no remorse for my actions. What I did was for my mate…

“Please I’ll tell you what you want.” She said once she caught her breath.

“My wolf wants you in his teeth, I suggest you start talking.” I said with a small glare.

“Um. I.” She stuttered, covering her nakedness with her hands. My glare was intense, and making her nervous, but there was literally nothing I could do about that. “I was the pet of the Third Seat’s son. He um… sent me here.” She mumbled.

I crossed my arms. “He told you to kill my pups didn’t he?” I asked, hearing her thoughts, impatient.

“Yes, my lord…. His father held no true Shadow Warriors, and even those were assigned elsewhere… but I knew I would fail… so I didn’t resist…. He sent me to die being unrealistic, but it’s better to be free and dead than alive in chains, tied to a bedpost…” She mumbled. My horns itched.

“Your father sold you.” I blurted.

“I have 7 tails. Had I 2 more… he… they. It doesn’t matter.” She said giving up.

“You looked like a teenager.” I mumbled. Honestly, she still looked like one, but her scent told me she was at least 90 or so now.

“It was the height of the Great Depression… and I was born not of my Stepmother. She was burned alive by the church, father was broke, captured, and my littlest half-sister was only three months old crying in his arms… They made him do it. He needed the money and safe passage away from the Sun Priests… but honestly, we are foxes. Your people stew us. I was lucky to live this long. He was luckier that Brutus was drunk, and his son wanted me…” She mumbled. “He said he would come back for me, but who would want me now that I am… shame?” She asked.

“I would, if you would join my pack. Oath to me your loyalty little one, and I will forgive your mistake.”

“You would not do such a thing. You are the King of the Forest. I’m surprised you’ve listened to my stammering this long.” I made myself careful not to make sudden movements. She looked a moment away from being too afraid to speak.

“At one point in time you were right. I wouldn’t have bothered counting your tails or hearing your story little hybrid.” I said getting up. “Though now I’m a father and an Alpha, not just the King of the Forest.” I said with a small smile.

I smelled blood. She had bit her hand. “I think this is how you do it… I’ve never done a blood oath before, but I swear as your pack I will be useful somehow and no threat to anyone. I swear…”

I turned closing my fist, and letting her see. “I hold you to your vow. I vow to protect you from your past, and prey you have a real future.”

Her eyes held hope, something I didn’t think I would see from her in a long time. “Thank you master.” She bowed.

“No, I am Alpha.” I corrected, letting her out the cell. The Warrior was already waiting for me. She followed me silently, and she was given a pullover blue shift dress as well as her belongings.

“Holy shit.” She mumbled, unable to take her gaze off Caleb. We were intimidating to a shifter so small, as they were only about the size of a dog. Her human form was about four feet tall, though she was thinner than she should be. She wasn’t unhealthy, just thin.

“I’m a friend, don’t worry.” Said Caleb. He’d heard her words, and he too was swayed by her plight. If I get the chance, Brutus won’t have a bloodline left to live his sleezy legacy.

She said nothing, only looking down at her hands. I called for my car, because I knew the shift was about to change here soon, and no one minded bringing it for me. She would ride with me since I hadn’t added her to the pack yet, and she was terrified. I had a feeling she would run off and try to hide if I let her see my wolf.

She got in with no resistance. “Thank you.” She said quietly, and I nodded.

“You don’t have to do that.” I said softly.

“Alright.” She said agreeing with me. Nine tails hold no scars, they were beautiful creatures like elves…. But I could tell by thin lines and visions her treatment was of a pet. She was his toy, and verbal punching bag. She never denied him, she did not question him for fear of his anger, and it made it hard to drive. I wanted to leave, and send him to my father flesh and all… For some reason I knew that was possible… I couldn’t explain how though. I glanced her direction.

“You don’t have to do that either.” I said with a small smile, but she didn’t return it.

She was silent, debating of if I wanted her to disagree instead. I didn’t want anything from her other than peace. I wanted her to know she was safe here. She came here to die, but maybe she could live and be happy instead.

“What’s your angle?” She finally asked.

“None.” I said pulling into the packhouse. “Though know if you make any sudden movements toward my pups, I will not hesitate to kill you.”

“I won’t try anything. We already exchanged blood oaths.” She said with a small smile. There were looks of distaste when she came in, as any who know of fox shifters disliked them. They really were worse than Rogues. These little shifters tended to have abilities, especially when they held multiple tails. Her eyes weren’t purple…. But she was a seven tail, and many who were once nomads could tell. I linked Isabelle to place the pups in our room as well as herself. Technically she was still armed with magic, how much I didn’t know, but I would be careful.

I walked behind her, while she practically shook holding the railing. Caleb had left with Beta, likely confiding in him advice on being a father…. She stopped at the door, waiting for me, holding her hands.

I could hear my pups go wild as I made it into the office, and I pointed for her to sit. She would not be strong, or useful, but she would be safe. Any other Alpha would have sneered at me, or at the very least questioned my reasoning, but there need not be a reason to do the right thing. I felt my chest tingle around where my mark was laid. It seemed even my body reacted positively to my decision.
