The Prisoner’s Princess Chapter 68
Isabelle
We had been on the road in the middle of the night for about an hour now, and we had only an hour and a half to go. The pups slept unknowingly in the backseat in a basket, but they would most likely wake up soon. I missed the help I had, and also I hated having to text goodbyes to everyone so suddenly, but my mate was right. The fewer people that knew our movements, the better, even family. They could accidentally say the wrong thing to the wrong wolf, and then it would be an issue.
The issue would be my mate and his wrath. I already knew by how alert he was while we drove that he was literally waiting for someone to try him today. I had already texted Gabby about it, because I didn’t want him seeing me texting Beta. He was fine with Zack now, but I didn’t want to be the cause of any friction, should there be another wave of rumors… I just felt that that kind of lie never really dies out.
“I heard that. Isabelle stop worrying. You can talk to Zackery. I knew you wouldn’t do anything with him, I was just upset and irrational.” He mentioned, keeping his eyes on the road. “It was so strange that you were afraid, that for a second that she wolf had me.” He said seriously.
“Really? I was scared you were going to kill Zack and go on an absolute rampage.” I told him, and he said nothing. He drove stern faced for a while, and I knew I was right.
“I know you’re about to think about what I would have done to you, but know I would never hurt you…” He said putting a clawed hand on my thigh.
“Yeah but you would have locked me away or something.” I said trying to make light of his seriousness, because he was making me uncomfortable.
“Naturally.” He commented, either not getting my meaning or not acknowledging it.
“Look horses.” I said looking out the window. I did it more to change the subject, but he squeezed my leg a little.
“You don’t have to be nervous little mate, I’m not the same man I was when I met you.” He said quietly.
There was a heavy silence that enveloped the small car after that, and my gut sank. He smelled angrier than usual, and some of it was probably because of me, but I knew most of it was because we were almost home.
He got off the interstate, and we drove down a long scenic road holding hands and looking at the trees and such. He however, seemed to enjoy the peace and quiet the closer we got home. His eyes were a deep crimson, and I put my hand on his. We interlaced our fingers.
“I know this sounds crazy, but I missed when you were with Kaiden… I knew you were safer around your family and the kings…. But here the only ones I could probably trust would be Zackary, Alexander, their mates, and the pups. I don’t want anything to happen to you.” He said suddenly, and I shook my head.
“Bryson, don’t you think I feel the same with you?! I feel like someone is going to stab you in the back for the territory.” I said squeezing his hand, and he shook his head.
“I already have a plan for when I die. The world would be fine without Bryson the Beast… it wouldn’t without Isabelle Charred.” He blurted then his eyes went wide as if he shouldn’t have said that. I gasped, looking at him in horror.
“Is THAT what everyone was hiding from me?! Bryson you Can’t die! I need you!” I screamed and he shook his head.
“It’s supposed to happen when I fight Ryan….” He said quietly.
“Oh my lady, then don’t fight him! Whatever he does to make you do it, get the council involved instead.” I told him and he looked at me, then back at the road.
“They hate me.” He stated.
“That may be so, but dad and Phillip have the final say.” I said, trying to calm my wolf of an event that may not even happen.
“For the sake of your happiness, I will try. I am born a warrior wildflower; I may die like one.” He said quietly. He seemed like he had made his peace on dying a while ago, but if I could help it, I wouldn’t let him. It isn’t fair. I just got my mate… and it’s even more unfair for him. he was alone for centuries, only to have a few months of happiness, bullshit.
I smelled the pack, and I tired linking Gabby or Hazel, because I knew my mate. He would be linking his commanders the moment we were in range, and I finally got Hazel.
Yes Luna. She linked.
Bryson is so worried about me, that he’s forgetting there’s a target on his back as well. We only have one neighbor left: Ryan. He’s up to something. Contact Alpha Phillip for me to authorize an investigation.
Luna he already did, but we didn’t find anything… at least nothing on paper. He’s a snake. He kisses Alpha’s ass in public, but plots his downfall in private. She linked and I nodded, though she didn’t see that.
Meet me in the office when we get home. I linked.
We arrived at the packhouse, and we were greeted by every ranked wolf in the pack, even from all the way up in OpalMoon, which impressed me. I got the pups out the car and held them next to my mate, who was stern as stone, and his gaze looked at each wolf. He was reading their minds one by one. I knew because it was the same scrunched face dad made when he did it. Some of the weaker members held their heads, but they would have to deal with the temporary migraine. I knew I couldn’t stop him.
“Pack. Thank you for your warm welcome this fine morning, but I must admit, this is a bit much. I have been overcrowded with wolves these past few days, and I’d hoped to have a bit of respite before socializing.” He admitted to them.
“We will leave then, Alpha, forgive me for the gesture.” Said Zack with a bow but Bryson shook his head.
“No, it moves me. That you all wished to organize greeting us in any way on your own shows me that you all are worth your salt.” He said with the smallest smile. He relaxed ever so slightly, as he must have been satisfied with his prying. We went inside first, and I made my way to my office to see that there were no papers at all, other than the ones that needed my signature. The same was with Bryson’s, though admittedly, there were more. He walked up right behind me, followed by everyone else and chuckled.
“I expected more.” He mumbled, but Zack shook his head.
“Alpha I tried my damnedest to make sure that nothing was on that desk that wasn’t absolutely necessary… but not so dire that if left unattended it would make trouble.” He said with a small smile.
“I thank you for that.” Said my mate, sitting in his chair with a thud. It sounded like it would break, and then I remembered I was supposed to have ordered him one ages ago.
“Lady.” Giggled Gabby, and I shook my head.
“May I see your pups?” Asked Alex, and Bryson shot him a glare.
“He’s just a pup, chill.” I said with a small smile, and he timidly approached. He stopped short of the seating area in front of my desk, and he smiled.
“Woah, they have little horn nubs.” He said in astonishment, “…. Can I touch ‘um?” He asked and I debated on this.
“Go ahead.” I said, without a snarl, because it would have made Bryson overreact. I could see him practically foaming at the mouth.
He held Kaizen gently, and rubbed between his horn nubs, and he squeaked. “My Lady…. He sounds so adorable…. Welcome to the world little Alpha.” He said, handing him back, but he dared not touch the rest, because I could feel my eyes were red.
“They certainly will be…” Said Zack with a small smile, but he didn’t ask. He could tell our instincts were still too strong for that.
“I never thought I would be serving the princess and a demigod.” Chuckled Beta Martini from BlackMoon.
“One that pays on time too.” Mentioned Gamma Nelson shaking his head. They all agreed.
“Really?” Asked my mate with a raised eyebrow.
“Alpha, if I may speak. We work long hours, with reasonable pay, but considerable danger. Honestly I haven’t seen this much peace or smooth running of a pack in my entire life, even when we used paper….” He said respectfully, and there was mass agreement.
