"You're telling me he's been poisoned?" I had to ask twice because it sounded utterly perplexing. It was so strange that this had happened to him.

"Not precisely tonight, but it appears that a small amount of poison has been administered to his body over the past year," he explained, which was even more frightening. Then, something else struck me, and I couldn't help but stare at his face in disbelief.

"Why did you inquire if I had been preparing his meals?" I asked through clenched teeth, "You don't think I--? Of course, that's why you asked if I had been cooking for him. Didn't you just say it had been ongoing for over a year?" I was seething at his insinuations.

"Yeah! But that doesn’t mean you can’t connive someone to do so," he shrugged, stealing his eyes from me when I narrowed my gaze at his face.

"You---," I closed my eyes to calm my raced breaths down before I attacked him and grabbed him by his shirt, "You think I have that much power over his mind to make him poison Atticus?" I yelled, completely forgetting the fact that I had challenged his ego by attacking him.

I stayed silent before he grabbed me by my wrists and gave my body a good shake before he pulled me even closer and did something I didn’t expect from him.

He fucked his lips against mine and wrapped his arm behind my back and around my head to make sure I didn’t escape him.

I was so stunned that I couldn’t even move a muscle for a few seconds while he sucked my lips with force, making my heart pound harder in my chest.

"Get the fuck away from him,"

We were only a few seconds older when Rosalie’s ear-splitting screams shook me awake. I pushed him away and glared at him in shock.

"Why did you kiss her?" Rosalie was already crying by the time she approached us. She began to scold and yell at Enzo, who was calmly standing in his spot with a smirk on his face and his eyes stuck on me.

I didn't comprehend his motive until I heard Rosalie's sobs, realizing that he wanted to hurt her.

"What? She's my mate," he shrugged, displaying no concern for her obvious distress.

"What?" The gasp that escaped her lips sent shivers down my spine.

"No, we're not. He forced a kiss on--," I was about to warn her not to believe him, that he was deceiving her, but she swiftly turned around and slapped me across the cheek.

I wish I had seen it coming, but I didn't expect this woman to be so vengeful. Instead of appreciating my attempt to take her side, she struck me.

I should have just kept quiet and let her go on a rampage, but I had to go and act all self-righteous.

That's when she raised her hand again but couldn't follow through because someone else had stepped between us.

"Tie this wild animal to a tree," Atticus shouted at Enzo, his commanding voice hushing the whole area. Rosalie covered her mouth with her hands and cautiously moved behind Enzo.

Atticus turned to look at me, examined my cheek, and then faced them again.

"She saved my life and brought me here without worrying that her husband would punish her if he found her here, and you two are treating her like this?" He continued to scold them, shocking them with his words.

Enzo hung his head in guilt, while Rosalie peered over his shoulder to glare at me.

"Dude, you should be resting. My mom ran all the tests--," Enzo thought perhaps changing the subject would be a good idea, but Atticus slapped his hand away.

"Thank you so much for your care and help, but I think I'll leave now," Atticus had never sided with me before. It was only after he began to realize my innocence that he started to defend me.

"I didn't hit her. Rosalie--she just thought--," Enzo didn't have an excuse, as explaining things to Atticus would require revealing that he had forced a kiss on me.

"Save it," Atticus grunted, slowly hunching down and taking deep breaths.

"You're not feeling well--," Rosalie stepped out from behind Enzo to express her concern, but Atticus was still in a foul mood.

"No kidding, Sherlock!" he retorted before turning to me. "Let's go home," he said, taking my hand. He did it right in front of Enzo and Rosalie, whose jaws dropped as Atticus led me out of the garden to his car.

While Enzo didn't hurry, Rosalie dashed towards the car to have one last word with Atticus.

"I only hit her because Dr. Sheen said Cynthia had been poisoning you," now that she realized she had made a mistake, she began to point fingers at me and accuse me of wrongdoing.

"That's a lie," I blurted out, unable to stay quiet now that Atticus was here to defend me. "I never poisoned you, and Enzo's mom never mentioned my name," I refused to remain silent.

"Rosalie!" Atticus took a deep breath, cleared his throat, and warned her, pointing his finger at her. "Don't try to obstruct me, at least not today."

"Let's go," he said, holding the car door open for me and then sliding inside after I had taken a seat.

The car started, and soon we left the mansion. I watched silently as Enzo and Rosalie got into their vehicles and followed us.

I didn't know what would happen next, but one thing was certain: Atticus was changing. He must have believed in my innocence, or else he wouldn't have confronted his friends on my behalf.

"Thank you for what you did--," he paused just as he was about to express his gratitude. I wondered what had occurred until he asked me in a grumpy tone.

"Is that--Enzo's jacket?" Just as I was starting to feel a bit better, he pointed at the brown jacket and scowled.
