I walked out of the room, scanning the area for him. They were waiting for breakfast to be served as I calmly made my way to the courtyard, where they were sitting at the outdoor dining table.

Thankfully, Mr. Holt was already seated next to Maleeka and encouraging her to eat some fruit. Maybe he wasn't in such a bad mood after all?

"Ehm!" I cleared my throat, and I noticed Atticus put his phone down and give me a once-over.

"Hey! Good morning." Mr. Holt didn't even glance my way, but Maleeka warmly greeted me first.

I'm glad I don't have a wolf because she would have been upset about not being welcomed by her mates. Being mated to them didn't really matter to me; it didn't affect me the same way it would affect my wolf.

"Hello, how are you today?" I asked Maleeka, grinning at her and stealing a glance at Mr. Holt out of the corner of my eye.

"She's fine," he replied on her behalf, turning his face towards me and giving me an intensely cold stare.

"Oh, that's fantastic," I responded with a weak smile.

"You don't seem too happy, Cynthia!" He muttered quietly, leaving me puzzled by his remark.

He was trying to imply something. The way he held the apple on a fork for Maleeka and spoke to me was just strange, so he brought it up in an odd way. "Anyway, I was thinking of taking you out to lunch today."

"It's alright; we can schedule it for another day," I replied. After last night, I didn't want to be alone with him, at least not until he assured me that he wasn't upset with me and wouldn't punish me.

"Why? Is it because of last night?" Interestingly, he brought it up himself. His question caught my attention, and I scowled, looking at his face, searching for an explanation of what he was trying to achieve.

"Do you really want to continue this after last night's argument?" He continued, which made me more concerned.

"Why do you always have to compete with her when she's my first mate and is expecting?" My breath caught in my throat as I heard what he said. Was this what he was trying to achieve?

I watched his surprised expression, wondering why he was being so cunning and what he hoped to gain by stirring up conflict between Maleeka and me.

They must have believed I was envious of Maleeka for giving him a child before me because I noticed their eyes on me.

"Why would I want to be envious of her?" I decided to speak up rather than stay silent, as staying silent would only make me look bad. But I wasn't willing to pay the price for contradicting Mr. Holt.

"Okay, let's not talk about this," Maleeka intervened to prevent the argument from escalating further.

"How about you take her out? You guys haven't been on your honeymoon as well," she suggested, and my heart sank as Mr. Holt and I exchanged glares.

Why does she think I would want to go out with him? When Mr. Holt cracked a grin, I could tell he was genuinely considering the idea, which added to my unease. He had effectively made it appear as though I was upset with Holt for spending more time with Maleeka.

Atticus was still staring at his phone, but he stood motionless. I had the feeling he was watching me from the corner of his eye.

Mr. Holt had found a reason to meet me alone since the school had already been dismissed. The breakfast had been chaotic. Afterward, we all headed to our rooms, but fortunately, I was given permission to explore.

As I was walking past Maleeka's room, I overheard them talking. In a heated argument with his sister, Atticus regretted suggesting that Mr. Holt and I go on vacation.

"Atticus! I hope you're not ignoring the fact that she isn't your current mate. Don't you think it's unfair that she's living as if she hasn't been accepted by her mate yet, even though she's a newlywed wife who hasn't had the chance to spend time with her husband? He's spending more time with me, which is unjust," she argued with him. I used to think Maleeka was a really nice person, but now her concern seemed to be causing trouble for me as she tried to convince Atticus that I also deserved my mate's attention.

"Since when have you been taking care of his second mate?" Atticus wasn't ready to believe that his sister only wanted to help me; he had other concerns that I was also struggling to understand.

"I do remember you being so upset and afraid of losing him, and now you're all about giving them time and encouraging him to spend time with her," he added.

"What are you trying to say, Atticus?" She asked her brother, as her voice started to tremble.

Perhaps she was too afraid to reveal her true intentions to him.

He said in a tone that was much gentler but also filled with sorrow, "You're afraid that if he doesn't spend time with her, she'll encourage him to harm you again."

I was taken aback. They believed I was a malicious person who wanted to hurt her, but what I just heard also broke my heart because she was so frightened of me that she was willing to let me take her mate away from her. I placed my palms on my chest to calm my racing heart.

She was now speaking in a hushed tone, which startled me with the revelation: "I don't want to take any chances, Atticus. What if she becomes furious with me?"

"Maleeka! It's not Cynthia's doing," I was surprised to hear Atticus supporting me, as I had assumed he held a grudge against me.

"How did you find out? She told you something, didn't she?" I heard Maleeka being exceedingly polite, as if she were concerned that I might overhear.

"Sister! Please don't let all of this consume your mind and emotions until I find out the truth," I felt so relieved to hear Atticus speaking up for me and expressing his genuine concern. "She needs us to stay safe. She's also in danger."

At least now I knew he had accepted my story, but what about this dreadful honeymoon?
