Cynthia Dion:

I had fainted after losing blood. I couldn't recall what transpired, who had whisked me away, or, dare I say, who had control over me now. However, one thing was certain; happiness was no longer in my future.

I was conscious of my profound loss – the ability to bear children had slipped through my grasp. Fainting had provided a brief respite before the waves of grief washed over me.

"Eh!" I moaned while in bed, attempting to stir but discovering my body to be uncooperative. Astonishingly, I wasn't tethered to anything, which went against my initial assumption. I was simply unwell.

"Hey! Don't move," I heard a familiar voice caution. I recognized the voice and knew to whom it belonged. I hurriedly opened my eyes, only to be met by the sight of Atticus by my bedside. A scowl marred my forehead when I beheld his face – the mate who had singlehandedly shattered my world.

"Why am I here?" I had no desire to unearth the events that had unfolded. "And where on earth am I?" I demanded, raising my voice.

"Calm down. You're at Enzo's place," he responded, pulling a chair close to the bed and taking a seat.

"Why? I should be in jail, not here," the fact that my mind instinctively yearned for incarceration rather than being here was indicative of how much I dreaded this form of freedom.

"Cynthia! You're unwell, so don't--" He began, but as I observed his attempt to draw the blanket over me, I swatted his hand away.

"What's your plan now?" I scoffed. "Do you think your kindness can deceive me at this point?" I mumbled, shaking my head as tears streamed down my face.

"Don't cry! It's not good for your health," he advised, avert his gaze, perhaps unable to witness my anguish, considering he was the one who had shattered me.

"Health? Thanks to you, I've lost everything. There's nothing left of my well-being," I muttered sarcastically, attempting to rise, but my feet were too sore to cooperate.

"Cynthia! You mustn't move so much. The doctors warned you, and if you don't take proper care of yourself this time, you could..." He paused, and my interest was piqued.

"Did I... I didn't lose my ability to conceive again?" I whispered, my chest heaving with anticipation.

"No! But you might not be so fortunate next time," he replied calmly. "That's why I've pleaded with the council not to send you to jail or elsewhere. You need to be looked after. It was a tough sell, but I lied to them. I told them the baby was mine." He avoided eye contact when mentioning the baby.

"And because you're the Alpha, sleeping with you didn't count as a crime," I chuckled, my heart fluttering.

He knew it wasn't Mr. Holt's child, and he believed it wasn't his either, so he thought I'd been involved with other people.

"That doesn't matter. Rosalie is very ill, but she managed to share with everyone what you did for her. It took us by surprise. We had no idea you had that in you – helping someone and being willing to sacrifice yourself. You've shown growth. Anyway, Enzo has agreed to let you stay here because of what you did for Rosalie. His little sister is already with her grandparents, so she won't cross paths with you. Just try to avoid any conflicts with his parents; they aren't particularly fond of you," Atticus explained, his gaze fixed on his watch to avoid meeting my eyes.

"Why are you doing all of this?" I couldn't resist asking, wanting to understand his motives. Why would he extend his help to me when he believed I was such a reprehensible person?

"Just don't press me with questions," he responded wearily. "Keep this cellphone, and if you ever need anything, message me." He placed a phone on the bedside table.

"Take me back to my parents' house; I'll be safer there," I turned my face away. The thought of staying here with Enzo, who harbored resentment towards me, didn't sit well with me.

"That place isn't suitable for you," he replied, straightening up and avoiding my gaze. "It's not a clean environment," he hesitated to say it while looking at me, but I understood what he meant.

"Like the clean places didn't mess me up," I scoffed, offering a sardonic smile.

"Just stay put for now, and then we'll figure out where to relocate you," Atticus adjusted his jacket and exited the room, just as he always did.

The only difference this time was that I didn't want to be around him. I simply craved solitude, willing to do whatever it took to recover, reunite with my sister, and find a way to relocate to a distant pack.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Sheen Turner, Enzo's mother, entered the room with Enzo. She had a stern expression as she set the tray down. Despite their wealth, she had chosen to bring the tray herself.

"Why are you trailing me? I told you I could handle this. There's no need for you to shadow me here," she scolded Enzo, who I suspected had come to speak with me.

"Fine, I'll wait outside," he awkwardly nodded and left the room, leaving just me and his mother, who seemed like she might set me on fire if given the chance.

"Eat this," she said, placing the tray down rather roughly, causing juice to spill over the tray.

"Thank you," I nodded my head, "I understand you didn't sign up for this and are doing it under duress, but I promise I won't overstay my welcome here," I expressed my gratitude for her assistance, even if she detested it.

"That would be for the best. You see, I don't know what sort of values your parents instilled in you, but such behavior is not tolerated in my house. I've maintained a clean home for too long, and now the Alpha has burdened us with this," her body language and tone made it clear that she was repulsed to be sharing the same air with me.

"Oh, don't worry, I won't tarnish your house with my presence," my lips quivered as I forced those words from my mouth.

I'd grown weary of justifying myself, and now, I simply wished to nod and remain silent.

"By the way," she was on her way out when she paused and turned back to express what she hadn't yet said, "kudos to you for your escape from that cabin. If I were a she-wolf like you, I might not have made it, but going after that man's..." She didn't finish, but her body shuddered at the mere attempt to say that word, "I mean, you really stood your ground," her casual shrug and subsequent scoff felt like a slap.

Without waiting any longer, she swiftly left the room. I couldn't help but be astonished at how she had belittled me for attempting to protect my dignity and save Rosalie's life.

So she'd rather not fight back and let another girl endure such an ordeal? Such a mentality was incredibly toxic. Why should a she-wolf be expected to remain innocent and pristine? Does speaking up for ourselves and fighting for our well-being make us impure?

I couldn't help but ponder how much disdain these so-called high-class she-wolves held for sex workers, who worked diligently to stand on their own feet rather than be at someone's mercy.

I consoled myself with the fact that I wouldn't have to stay here and endure her judgment for too long. It would be even better if her maid handled my meals and everything else, sparing me from having to listen to her nonsense again.

After finishing my meal and taking my medications, I had a shower with the assistance of a nurse that Atticus had arranged to look after me. His newfound interest in taking care of me had left me bewildered. I was vigilant about his intentions this time; I wouldn't allow him to toy with me again.

Emerging from the bathroom in a brown dress, I unexpectedly found Enzo in the room. My body instantly went on high alert.

I was taken aback because he had locked the door behind us.
