His lips were so smooth against mine that I was not only startled but also immobilized. My body seemed to have been wanting the sensation and comfort for a very long time. I admit that I didn’t want him to end the kiss, and that’s what I hate myself for.

I adored the way he tasted and the way he held my other hand while holding my back with a gentle arm around it.

He even made a moaning sound while sliding his lips slowly over mine, which further mesmerized me. I let him gently suck my lips, taking the nectar from my lips into his mouth, before a name popped into my head.

The memory of what happened on the very first day of my marriage, combined with the thought of his name, was enough to drive a wedge between us.

When that name crossed my mind, my eyes snapped open. Atticus was the reason I had to endure living with an abuser for the sake of my physical and mental well-being. He looked surprised when I pushed him away, my palms against his firm chest.

"You are the source of my pain," I whispered as I closed my eyes, trying to hold back the tears.

"Cyn----," his voice softened, "what happened?" he asked, as if he didn't already know.

"Don't touch me again," I hissed through tears.

"You must be in pain," he made up an excuse, perhaps to soothe his ego, "let's go so you can transition and heal," he cleared his throat, avoiding eye contact.

For someone who had claimed to hate someone for so long, his kiss had exposed his lie.

"I don't need your advice," I muttered, feeling frightened by the idea of shifting. It would only expose me further.

"Alright, calm down. Let's get you home," I could sense his confusion, wondering why he had taken such a significant step by kissing me and why I had pushed him away.

I took a deep breath and started following him. We both remained silent for a while. Eventually, I found myself in the car with him, and since Atticus had settled me in the car, he kept clearing his throat.

"That's probably why your throat feels itchy," I mumbled, gazing out the window.

I don't know why, but there was a small sense of happiness in my heart. Winning against so many formidable werewolves was a victory I had never expected to taste.

"How did that kiss with Rosalie taste, by the way?" I turned to face him. "You question my loyalty at every turn in my life, yet you go around sticking your tongue in her mouth every chance you get," I grumbled, the memories of that moment filling my eyes with angry tears.

"Huh! Just one victory, and you're already taunting me?" He suddenly relaxed, a smirk forming on his face. It seemed he found satisfaction in getting under my skin.

"Besides, who told you I question your loyalty? I don't care what you do with anyone. My only concern was my sister's marriage. I wanted you to stop bothering her," he nodded, his jaw clenched, dashing my hopes that perhaps his anger stemmed from his love for me.

"So, if Mr. Holt had never been in the picture, you would have still rejected me?" I don't know why I asked, giving him more satisfaction.

"I would have never accepted you!" he replied confidently, without a moment's hesitation.

"I don't understand what the problem is then. He is my second chance mate, so when someone gets rejected by their first mate, it's natural to find a second mate. I found one too, and I had many reasons, including the humiliation you made me endure, to accept him. So, what's the problem? Your sister has accepted me," I said honestly, genuinely puzzled. If he didn't want me, then why did he hate me so much?

"Because of the way you won him. You could have let him accept you all, but no! You wanted my sister to suffer," he scoffed, his veins pulsating in his arm as he continued driving. His words didn't quite make sense in the moment.

"How did I win him? You are the reason I felt compelled to accept him. And I can't fathom how I made your sister suffer, aside from being accepted by Mr. Holt. And while we're accusing each other, why didn't you tell me he was your brother-in-law?" I was finally finding the right words to confront him.

"As if you didn't already know," he responded, not appearing too surprised by my claim of ignorance regarding their relationship.

"We should stop by the nearby woods so you can transition and heal," he then changed his tone, his voice trailing off.

"You don't have to worry about it," I scoffed.

"Cynthia! Quit being so stubborn," he said, gripping the steering wheel even tighter when I didn't heed his words.

His tone kept shifting, displaying various emotions.

"I'm not going to transition in front of you, Atticus," I finally shouted when the dread of watching him park near the woods began to sink in. Soon enough, he would ask me to transition, and then he'd discover I didn't have a wolf.

"Why?" He looked offended but still parked the car.

"I'm not... I'm not comfortable undressing in front of you," I stammered, quickly thinking of an excuse. It was a feeble one, but I had to come up with something.

"Why?" he turned to face me, and I kept my gaze averted.

Luckily, Atticus had left the security guard's car far behind.

"Because I don't want you to see me naked, damn it!" I blurted out, shifting to the side and facing him.

"Wow," he muttered, clearly frustrated. "Fine, I don't give a damn." Despite his anger, he started the car and didn't press the issue further. I could sense he was upset.

"I know you don't," I shrugged, my irritation growing. "And don't ever try to kiss me again," I muttered under my breath, becoming even more annoyed with his incessant questioning.

The more attitude I displayed, the angrier he became, and he accelerated the car.

Perhaps he expected me to plead with him to slow down, but I didn't. Even though I was scared he might crash into a tree, I kept my silence.
