Werewolf
Rejected Their Broken Luna Chapter 156: Chap-156*The Angry Mob*
Cynthia Dion:
"Ready to leave the room?" he inquired, shifting his leg over the other as he rose from the couch, and I confirmed with a nod. He unlocked the door and headed toward the garden, where breakfast awaited. I pondered why Mr. Holt hadn't griped about his wife and her ex mate occupying his brother-in-law's room overnight. His silence might also be a sign of an impending storm. They all tended to be a bit sluggish in the mornings, particularly on weekends, often sleeping in and indulging in a late brunch.
I spotted Maleeka, Mr. Holt, and Mara observing our arrival. As much as Maleeka desired to depart, she remained rooted, intent on asserting her claim to the house.
Seated at the table, Atticus began to spread butter on a slice of toast for me, a gesture that earned a disapproving eye-roll and headshake from Mara.
"I appreciate your Alpha qualities, but they might not score well in the mate department," Mara muttered, keeping her voice hushed for fear of Atticus's reaction.
"Thank you for your input; however, it's not necessary," Atticus, embracing his sassy Alpha persona, offered no reassurance or explanation. In reality, few mates would tolerate their partner spending the night with and caring for an ex-mate in such a manner.
"So, how long will it continue?" Mr. Holt's words captured our attention.
"I understand, and I've learned my lesson," Mr. Holt suddenly admitted. I had been avoiding him because his presence served as a painful reminder of how he had treated me, leaving me battered and bleeding on the cold floor, resulting in the loss of my baby. He was a true monster among us, making the others pale in comparison.
"I'll be responsible for my mate from now on. You just focus on yours," he assured Atticus, who paused briefly before finishing buttering my toast and placing it on the plate. I found myself questioning Atticus's true intentions regarding taking care of me. It was evident that I had trust issues, and I had no qualms about showing them now.
"I don't want to be with you," I interjected, breaking the silence. Their attention immediately shifted to me.
"Coming from someone who cheated on her mate and received the mark of the same person she carried a child for, you've got some nerve to address your mate like this," Maleeka blurted out, realizing her mistake when Atticus shot her a disapproving look. She promptly sealed her lips shut.
"She carried the baby of the man who marked her?" Atticus turned to his sister for clarification, and she exchanged a glance with Mr. Holt, who appeared displeased. So, did she know I was carrying her brother's child? It raised questions about what kind of sister she really was.
I had a suspicion that she might think I had been unfaithful, even after wrecking her home. However, the more I observed her, the more I doubted her innocence. Meanwhile, Mara remained mostly silent, leaving the others to handle the situation.
"I asked you something," Atticus pressed his sister.
"Maybe there are other guys involved, who knows," Mara chimed in, coming to Maleeka's defense.
"Did I address you?" Atticus raised his voice, and she shook her head. He continued, "Then please don't interrupt," firmly silencing her. "Tell me, how do you know who she got pregnant from?" He persisted in his questioning, and to be honest, I was curious too about how she could be so certain.
Perhaps she had sensed I wasn't the type to engage in casual relationships.
"I don't know, okay? There's no way to find out anymore, now that the baby is gone," Maleeka responded bitterly, invoking her elder sister status. "And look what she's making you do; you're interrogating your sister, who went through hell at her hands," Maleeka declared, putting an end to the conversation. Why was I so quiet when I hadn't done anything wrong? Perhaps I was afraid of losing my place to stay, but who cared? I'd had enough.
"That man was your husband, the dear husband who brutally harmed me until I lost my baby. How can you accuse and hold me responsible while giving that jerk sitting next to you a free pass?" My sudden outburst surprised them all since I had never spoken so boldly before.
Mr. Holt appeared skeptical of my words about him, and if Atticus hadn't been sitting beside me, seemingly unfazed and shaking his leg, Mr. Holt might have confronted me.
"Did you hear that? Did you see that change in her? That's the real her," Maleeka pointed at me, hoping to elicit a reaction from her brother.
"Anyone would be upset with someone who has mistreated her," Atticus nonchalantly shrugged, leaving Maleeka utterly flabbergasted. I was beginning to get so confused of Atticus. why was he openly defending me now?
"So, you're taking her side?" She inquired, while Mr. Holt leaned back in his chair, keeping a watchful eye on me.
His intense gaze began to unnerve me; it seemed like he was waiting for the slightest excuse to confront me.
"I feel like you're being unfaithful to me," Mara suddenly voiced her concerns, trying to play the emotional card with Atticus.
“Since when have I promised to be faithful to you? I told you why I was bringing you in my life,” Atticus shocked me and sit seemed like Mara went silent because of what he might expose about their relationship.
“You are hurting me,” her tone changed.
"Okay!" Atticus responded, then he shook his head, as if recalling something. "Can we all just finish breakfast in silence now?" He directed his gaze at his worried sister.
"You two enjoy your meal. I'll go back to my room," Maleeka abruptly rose from her chair, angrily leaving the table and slamming her napkin down, with Mr. Holt trailing behind her.
"Maleeka!" Atticus whispered in guilt, but she brushed him off with a gesture and stormed away. Atticus lingered for a few moments before rising to follow his sister.
Clearly, he cared about her and still thought that Mr. Holt and I had caused her pain, so he felt compelled to go after her. Now, I was alone with my former best friend, who hadn't taken her eyes off me.
