Cynthia Dion:

"You should help me!" Mara shouted from over the gate, but I paid little attention to her. After Atticus kicked her out, we returned to the living room to find Maleeka in tears and disbelief. I observed her unraveling in hysteria as her weapon against me backfired. Mr. Holt appeared shameless, likely grappling with the realization of how much I knew about him and Mara.

"I can’t believe s---he would tur-----n out to be t----his way," Maleeka cried, her words punctuated by hiccups. This betrayal seemed to cut deeper than her husband's actions and the subsequent blame placed on some alleged seduction.

As Maleeka lifted her face, her eyes held a profound sadness. It wasn’t only me she had wronged; her ill-conceived plan with Mara had also shattered her brother's trust.

"Atticus! Please, trust me! She convinced me to do this. She told me that if I didn’t comply, Cynthia would stay here and ensure harm befell my child," she pleaded, casting a desperate look at Atticus, who wore an expression of displeasure upon discovering his sister's deceit.

I discreetly shook my head at Mara, recognizing her for the snake she always proved to be. In retrospect, I should have realized she was never truly a friend, considering the numerous times she had wronged me in the past. Even during our supposed friendship, she consistently found ways to inflict pain, and now I'm inclined to believe it was all deliberate.

"I can’t believe you would do such a thing. Tell me, how do you expect me to believe anything you say against her after orchestrating all this? And tell me, how did aligning with Mara against her turn out for you?" Atticus shouted, his frustration evident as Maleeka covered her face with her hands.

I stood behind Atticus, observing both Maleeka and Mr. Holt appearing discontented, realizing they now looked like fools to Atticus.

"And you!" Atticus pointed at Mr. Holt, squaring up, "You knew all this, yet you remained silent. Why? Why didn’t you disclose that Mara was making advances on you all this time? If you had informed Maleeka and me, we could have expelled her, preventing all this from happening," he asserted, finally holding Zeon accountable, who seemed to believe he could escape this mess without facing any consequences.

"I didn’t want Maleeka to stress out," Mr. Holt repeated, resorting to the same lame excuse. "I knew she would be heartbroken after another she-wolf betrayed her trust," he mumbled, stealing a furtive glance at me. Did he still have the audacity to call me out after being caught hiding things from his mate?

"Really? Does she not look stressed out right now to you, or did you just think my sister loves surrounding herself with people who betray her?" I taunted Mr. Holt, who sought support from Maleeka.

"It’s sad that Mara was so blatantly going behind Maleeka’s back, and Mr. Holt hid the truth," I murmured, casting a sidelong glance at him. I knew my statement would evoke disappointment in Maleeka's eyes as she looked at him.

"I think Maleeka should rest for now. It has already been an incredibly stressful day for her," I began to say, but Maleeka didn’t appreciate it and snapped at me.

"You! Why do you care? You are the one who has ruined my perfect life," she hissed at me like a venomous cobra, but fortunately, Atticus intervened.

"You're still yelling at her? You were the one who tried to trap her in your dirty plan with that person, and you're still angry at her?" Atticus's words coincided with a tear running down her cheek.

"I know you think I’m a bad person after today, but what about all the times she -- she ruined me?" Maleeka's lips quivered, and Atticus's muscles stiffened as he witnessed his sister so broken.

"I’ll go and rest," she showed him her palm when he tried to hug her and walked away from us.

I walked back to my room with Atticus, who paced anxiously until his eyes finally landed on me.

"Cynthia!" he whispered my name. "I’m sorry for what happened today." As he apologized, I shook my head and scoffed.

"It’s not like you haven’t done anything," I attempted to walk away from the conversation, but he held my hand, bringing me to a halt.

"I know, but I’m trying to find out how all this started," he said, not releasing my hand and drawing himself closer to me. I kept my face down, making it challenging for him to meet my eyes. He had to hunch down to look at my face.

"How are you able to speak up now?" I asked in a sarcastic tone.

"After that séance, I became more like myself. It was as if I was granted back access to my body," he uttered softly.

"There has to be a reason that this mess started. I don’t believe it was just a man wanting to marry you," his words compelled me to raise my face and lock eyes with him.

"What do you mean?" Until now, I had assumed he was waiting for someone to assert my innocence, but he seemed to be delving into the past.

“I have been doing some brainstorming and also noticed a few things,” Atticus began in a whisper, his eyes zoned out.

“About what?” I inquired, a frown displaying on my forehead. It confused me that he looked like he was calculating something.

"One thing I realized today is that you didn’t want to marry Mr. Holt," as he spoke those words, I slipped my hand out of his, shaking my head in disappointment. "No! I don’t mean that I thought you wanted to before. Like I did believe that in the beginning, and then some stuff I saw," he said, closing his eyes as if forcing himself not to say something, "But I feel like somebody somehow -- tricked you into falling into this trap, but why, I don’t know," he finished, and my eyes narrowed at him.
