He rushed through the crowd to reach school on time. Punctuality was becoming nearly impossible, almost every day now.

As a Beta, soon to be Royal, the pack had high expectations for him. Zeon Holt, an orphan, didn’t stand a chance of becoming the Royal Beta until he learned to fight and had already defeated the other betas. At this moment, he considered himself more deserving, but nobody knew what would happen when little Atticus became the Alpha King and selected somebody else.

That didn’t bother Zeon at all. He was only 16, and there were barely a few things on his mind except completing his education with a good score. He reached the school and stopped near the main gate to catch his breath when he heard a voice from beside him that stole his attention.

Somebody was sniffling away their tears very softly, as if they were trying to be sneaky. Zeon straightened his back and turned to the side to see a girl squatting down and collecting her books from the ground.

"Hey, let me hel---" he paused just when he had gotten to his knees to offer her help. His heart almost jumped out of his chest after meeting the brown eyes of this pretty girl.

"Evangelina?" he asked with a bright smile covering his lips. He recognized her as his old neighbor. They used to play a lot until she was kicked out of the pack with her father after he was caught stealing something.

"Zeon?" She raised her face and realized this gentleman trying to help her was her old friend.

"Yes! It’s me. Oh, my God! You are here," he smiled widely, helping her pick up her books.

"I am glad to me--et you again," she was a bit shy and also trying to clean her tears, which brought Zeon to acknowledge that the only reason he saw her was that she was sobbing.

"What happened to you? Why were you sobbing?" he inquired, helping her get up on her feet with her books in her hands.

"Eva!" he spoke of her name softly. The one glance of hers has not only made his heart flutter, but something weird happened to him when he attempted to hold her hand to ask her what had bothered her.

‘Mate!’ his wolf mumbled, making Zeon step back and then smile instantly. Evangelina, too, felt it, but she couldn’t smile despite her desire to.

They were friends when they were kids, and now they are 16 and have found a way back to each other again.

"You felt it too, didn’t you?" Zeon whispered pleasantly, and when she nodded, he covered his mouth happily.

"What are you doing here?" he asked in bewilderment. There were so many questions pending, and he was not realizing which one he should go first with.

"This is my school as well now," her voice was very melodic; it was ringing right into Zeon’s heart.

He was popular for being the hot and sexy guy at school, and that had grabbed the attention of many others, along with the school’s popular cheerleader, Maleeka.

"Oh wow! It is like the Moon Goddess planned all this for us," he smiled widely, and as they were going to reach for her hand, she pulled away from him after she saw someone behind him.

Zeon frowned because he had no clue what had happened all of a sudden.

"What happened?" he inquired sweetly, and she only lowered her face to avoid eye contact with him.

"Oh look! She is standing here," It was Maleeka who had arrived with her friends. "Zeon! What are you doing with her?" She raised her brow when it didn’t sit well with her that her friend was talking to some trash omega.

"Sh---," Zeon couldn’t finish when Eva interrupted softly.

"He helped me with the---," she was shut down with a grunt from Maleeka’s side.

"I didn’t ask you, so don’t come between me and my best friend," the way she glared at Eva made it clear to Zeon that the reason behind Eva crying earlier was connected to Maleeka.

It was no secret that Maleeka was the Alpha King’s sister and also very popular in school. She was a Queen, and everything happened here, according to her.

Zeon would have received a tough time too had she not befriended him. She had fallen for him the very first day her eyes were laid on him.

Although she hadn’t told him her feelings, she was waiting for the wolves to realize they were mates.

"You are her friend?" Eva asked in a whisper that angered Maleeka.

"Hey! Why are you still communicating with my friend?" Maleeka pushed Zeon away from her and came between them. Her eyes were shooting silver arrows at poor Hazel, who found herself lost in the midst of everything.

She peeked at Zeon behind Maleeka and expected him to maybe help her out, but Zeon was standing there, analyzing everything.

A part of him wanted to help her because not only was she his mate but also someone he had liked a lot as a friend too, but he was too afraid of getting the same treatment as others.

He was treated with care. Everybody respected him because of Maleeka, so he wasn’t sure if he was willing to jeopardize all that yet for his love.

So he stayed silent, and Eva noticed it.

"Now get the fuck out of my sight before I decide to unleash my wolf on you," Maleeka grabbed Hazel’s bag strap and pulled her closer to mutter the words on her face.

"Okay! I a--m sorr---y for making you angry," Eva ended up apologizing, and when Maleeka let her go, she decided to leave, but not before she passed a very sad and disappointing glance to Zeon, who didn’t help her like she thought he would.

Eva marched after them to take her period, and, sadly enough, they shared the classes. Sadly, the entire time she was in the class, she had to face the hateful glares of Maleeka, who couldn’t brush away the fact that she saw her talking to Zeon.

She was beginning to understand there was something going on because Zeon had been turning around and looking at Eva every once in a while.

Later, when the lunch break was announced, Eva decided to grab her lunch and go to the backyard of the school.

She had sat down while feeling low. She couldn’t believe Zeon didn’t take a stand for her and was a friend of her bully. Zeon, too, had sneaked out after Maleeka got too busy with her friends. He approached Eva and sat down, making her aware of his arrival.

She started getting up, and that’s when he held her hand to stop her from leaving.

"We can’t even have lunch together?" he asked sadly, feeling guilty for making her feel miserable before.

"I can, but I don’t know about you. Your best friend will get angry and treat me badly once again if she sees us sitting here and talking," she murmured, not looking at him directly in the eye.

"I get it. You are angry at me, and you have every right to be. It is just very difficult to stay here without getting bullied," he admitted to being scared of mistreatment. It was just the truth. After receiving such good treatment because of Maleeka, he was now afraid of losing all that attention.

"So, what is your

plan for me?" Eva asked him, since she couldn’t find out from his statements, what he was going to do next.

"I don’t know for now, but I do know that I want to take you out on a dinner," the way he asked her out for a date made her shocked.

She remained silent for a minute, and then, when she saw him concentrating on her face, she agreed.

"Fine," she mumbled, "But you will have to drop me home, though. I am afraid of walking home alone." She was almost too embarrassed to say that.

"Why, your wolf cannot keep you safe?" he asked. It wasn’t a mockery or a taunt. Zeon was also into hearing stories from everyone about their wolves. He loved to study wolves and their patterns.

"Umm! I believe there is something you should know about me before you take me out on a date," she said, while playing with her fingers nervously.

"What is it?" he questioned, very confused and a bit frightened of what she was going to tell him.

"My wolf is not only omega, but it also lacks most of the strength," she almost teared up when talking about her wolf lacking all the main powers, "I cannot heal like others. I cannot transition whenever I want. My wolf can barely show up to defend me," she sniffled as she hugged herself tightly.

It broke Zeon’s heart to see her like that.

"You are a powerful beta; I am sure you were expecting to find a powerful mate like Maleeka--," before she could finish talking, Zeon felt a need to tell her the truth about Maleeka.

"Maleeka? We are not mates. We have not felt the mate bond, and I am sure my wolf will never feel it." As soon as those words escaped his lips, Eva smiled in relief. "And about you! I don’t care what your wolf is. I care about you. Eval! When we were only 13 and we used to hang out together, I had a huge crush on you. I always thought we would end up together, until I lost you. But that didn’t change my mind or heart about you. I was waiting for me to turn 18 and then find you, but the Moon Goddess had led you straight to me," he held her hand and stated very lovingly.

His every word was received with a smile on Eva’s lips. She was happy that he was her mate; he would never judge her.

While they were sharing giggles and laughing, there was a certain someone who had heard them talk, and it didn’t go well with her.

Maleeka had been standing behind them and listening to their conversation the entire time. She had just found out that Zeon and Eva were mates, and it made her go crazy.

She stormed back into the school but kept thinking about what she had heard.
