Cynthia Dion:

"Rosalie!" I called out for her, attempting to rouse her with a gentle face slap. "Ugh!" I grumbled, scanning the area until my gaze settled on the keys he had tossed aside while preparing for a heated rendezvous.

I tugged at my chain with all my might, but I still fell a foot short of grasping the keys. Regardless of my efforts to stretch my body, I remained unable to reach them.

"Alright! I need to think this through," I remarked, glancing at the clock. If I remember correctly, his men would be bringing him dinner in about an hour. That meant I had just one hour to orchestrate our escape. Since Rosalie remained unresponsive, it fell on me to devise a plan.

With careful consideration, I realized the task wasn't impossible. The bedroom was filled with furniture and assorted items, offering potential solutions if I used my wits. If I couldn't reach for the keys, something else could. My eyes settled on a lamp, a swing-arm lamp, the perfect tool for the job. I seized it, extending it toward the keys and slowly sliding them closer to me.

"Ah, thank goodness!" I grinned in triumph as my hand closed around the keys. I wasted no time liberating myself and hastening over to the bed.

"Rosalie!" I made one last attempt, but she slumbered as if she had no intention of awakening. Gently, I took her arm and hoisted her onto my shoulders.

I was acutely aware of the toll my body would pay for the extreme physical exertion I was about to endure. Carrying her posed a considerable risk, but leaving her behind was not an option. Her phone lay broken, and his had a passcode. The moment his guards arrived, saving us both would become nearly impossible.

Being utterly selfless, I hoisted Rosalie and made my way to the door. When I swung it open, I was met with a surprising sight—woods instead of a road. We were deep in the woods?

"It's alright; I can handle this," I muttered, feeling a dryness in my throat. The effects of the wolfbane hadn't completely dissipated, but I was prepared to endure whatever came my way.

The area outside the house was currently devoid of any onlookers, making it the perfect opportunity to depart. I commenced my journey toward the road, but carrying Rosalie had left me fatigued and gasping for breath.

My body ached in a peculiar way, its source eluding definition, but the moment my eyes fixed on the road, the pain felt justified.

"Look over there! Her phone pinged here last time," a voice reached my ears, and I recognized it as Enzo's. Had they initiated the search for her almost immediately? It was a heartwarming realization to be so cared for and loved by so many people. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I nearly froze. No one had ever shown me that kind of concern. I must have been terribly unlucky or just a difficult person to like. With a weak smile and an effort to hold back the tears, I emerged from the woods, drawing the attention of the entire crowd.

The sirens from the police cars blared loudly, and their flashlights were blinding me.

"Hey! Freeze right there," a cop commanded, pointing his gun at me and urging me to stay still.

"She needs a doctor!" I whispered, starting to feel lightheaded.

"What did this monster do to her?" Enzo yelled, disregarding the cops' warnings to stay back. I could be perceived as a threat, and they cautioned him accordingly. He pushed me aside once he cradled Rosalie in his arms. I stumbled but focused on remaining steady. Any sudden movement on my part might prompt the cops to open fire.

"On your knees!" the cops shouted, causing me to raise my hands in the air. Everything started to blur. They were yelling, and Enzo was in tears while cradling her. The love in his eyes for her was unlike anything I'd ever witnessed in his gaze. It was at that moment I realized that the mate bond meant nothing. If your mate didn't want you, no bond could make them accept you.

The ambulance and its blaring sirens were pounding in my head, and then I spotted someone approaching.

Atticus!

"She had her; she did something to her," Enzo cried out, passing Rosalie over to the ambulance doctors.

Atticus came to a stop right in front of the cops, his eyes locked on my face.

"It's alright," Atticus intervened, gesturing to the cops to lower their weapons.

"She is dangerous!" Enzo objected, his gaze locked onto Atticus as if expecting him to eliminate the threat then and there.

I trembled and wept, wracked with pain.

"She is—" as Enzo began to protest again, Atticus cut him off with a hiss.

"You're frightening her," Atticus scowled at Enzo before turning his attention back to me.

"Cynthia! Come here!" He disregarded Enzo's continuous protests and extended his hand toward me. My eyes fixed on his hand, and tears streamed down my cheeks. He wanted me to take his hand. I'd done it before, and it had only caused me pain.

"Cynthia!" he called out once more, observing as I took a step back and shook my head resolutely.

"No!" I whispered, tears streaming down my face at the sight of him.

"I won't hurt you this time, I promise," he assured, making these declarations in front of the crowd. But my heart refused to trust him.

I had once leaned on him until I understood that the only person one could truly rely on was oneself.

"You'll hurt me again," I muttered, shaking my head, my world spinning. Each step I took back from him left him in a state of bewilderment and dismay. It was clear that my lack of trust hurt him when I refused to take his hand.

I began to hyperventilate, unable to hold back the tears any longer, and then I noticed something wet between my legs. Slowly lowering my gaze, I saw blood running down my thighs.
