Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 100
Lawrence was in complete denial. "No way, Melinda. I don't buy it. Clara wouldn't do that. You're just trying to mess with me."
His voice echoed angrily behind me.
I heard the guards telling him to calm down. This time, I didn't stop or look back.
We ended up here because of Lawrence. Whether he believed me or not, I didn't care anymore.
But don't be fooled by Lawrence's disbelief. Guys like him, who had done so many shady things, were naturally suspicious. All I needed to do was plant a seed of doubt, and he would let it grow into a full-blown tree on his own.
Besides, Clara had been dodging Lawrence for a while now. He must have some doubts. Now that I had said this, he would probably be even more suspicious.
Christopher and Fallon were sitting in the hallway, waiting for me.
When I came out, Christopher asked, "How'd it go?"
I shook my head and explained Lawrence's situation. "From what Lawrence said, Clara just had the computer screen open. She didn't invite him to look at it, let alone guide him to buy something to kill my dad. It probably can't be used as evidence, right?"
Fallon, being a lawyer, got it right away. She nodded. "From what you said, it's hard to pin anything on Clara. Plus, Clara's got a strong legal team. This evidence isn't even enough to detain her."
I understood. A hint of disappointment crossed my face.
Christopher noticed and tried to cheer me up. "Clara's smart, no doubt. When I looked into her, I found out she studied criminal psychology after staying with her brother in a castle abroad. She's great at manipulating people without leaving a trace."
"But this time, she didn't succeed. Given her personality, she won't let it go easily. As long as she makes a move, she'll slip up. Before, she was in the dark, and you were in the light, so it was easy for her to manipulate you. But now, that might not be the case. Besides, if the Simpson family finds out what she's done, they probably won't have time to bother you for a while."
I had to admit, Christopher was good at comforting people. I felt a lot better.
I even managed a sly smile. "You're right. But I didn't come away empty-handed. I told Lawrence why Clara found and used him. He's so selfish, always scheming against others. Now that he's suspicious of Clara, he might not let her off easily."
Seeing my improved mood, Christopher relaxed a bit.
Fallon handed me a document. "This is from my mentor. It's evidence of Lawrence transferring assets."
She pulled out a specific document and explained, "This one details a floor of a building and two commercial properties in prime locations, worth about twelve million dollars, all under Missy's name."
I looked it over. Lawrence was really something, buying these properties behind my back without me noticing.
Fallon then pulled out two more documents. "This one shows the properties Lawrence bought for his family and the million dollars he gave each of them, all under Missy's name. Each property is worth about two million dollars, totaling around ten million."
"Then there are the insurance policies, including Missy's retirement insurance, all maxed out, plus over a million dollars in cash given to Missy. Altogether, it's nearly thirty million dollars."
Lawrence's greed was mind-blowing. I suspected the company was almost an empty shell by now.
Fallon added, "From the timing of the purchases and withdrawals, it's clear that Lawrence started transferring assets systematically from the moment you got married. This suggests his marriage to you had ulterior motives."
I smiled bitterly. "I was really naive. His actions weren't even that secretive, and I didn't notice a thing."
Fallon, worried I might take it too hard, reassured me. "It's not your fault. Lawrence is a cruel man and a master of disguise. After this ordeal, your future might be bright. Don't punish yourself for his mistakes."
I nodded, appreciating her words. "Thank you, Fallon. You're right. It's not my fault. Lawrence is the bad one, and he'll get what he deserves. I'm not the same weak girl who first discovered the truth. I've grown stronger and won't wallow in self-pity. By the way, how long will it take to handle Lawrence's case?"
Fallon thought for a moment. "It depends on what you want to do. Do you want to wait for the criminal investigation results before considering divorce, or handle the divorce first? If you wait for the criminal results, it will take some time. If you start the divorce process now, it will be quicker. The fastest way is to get Lawrence to sign the divorce papers voluntarily."
I didn't hesitate. "Let's handle the divorce first. Just being married to him makes me sick. I need to divorce him as soon as possible, or I won't be able to sleep or eat."
Fallon nodded. "We'll proceed as you decided."
I thought for a moment and added, "Lawrence cares a lot about his mother. Fallon, please tell Lawrence that aside from Missy's criminal charges, which I can't and won't interfere with, I won't pursue the civil matters, like the asset transfers, if they return everything."
This was my final offer. "I believe Lawrence is smart enough to understand. If he hears this, he should sign the papers quickly. I want this divorce as soon as possible, for my parents' sake."
Thinking about how Kyle was killed by Lawrence, and how I brought trouble into the house, I felt deep sorrow and anger, wishing I could tear Lawrence apart.
Fallon, being Jason's student, was just as efficient. She immediately started preparing the materials at the law firm.
Christopher had the driver take her back to the firm. Then Fallon made sure I was safe. "Mr. Collins, please ensure Ms. Turner gets home safely."
As her client, she was very considerate of my safety.
