Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 337
Christopher didn't agree to my request.
He reminded me, "Melinda, Quinlan's tougher than you think. You gotta trust and respect her!"
His words hit home.
He was right!
I meant well, always wanting to help Quinlan more because I felt so sorry for her.
Not just because I was a girl and naturally empathized with another girl like Quinlan, but also because she was practically the only relative I had left in this world with whom I shared a good relationship.
But Quinlan was an adult with her own thoughts. If she needed help, I could be there for her, but I shouldn't interfere too much with her decisions.
"Mr. Collins, thanks for the reminder. I get it now."
I thanked him sincerely.
Of course, I still sent Quinlan a message, not to interfere with her decisions, but just to let her know that if she ever needed help, I was here.
I didn't get a reply, though. Maybe she was too busy or her phone was off because of spam calls.
After work, as Christopher and I were heading home, I was about to get out of the car. I must have been a bit distracted because I almost tripped getting out.
Thankfully, Christopher caught my wrist just in time, pulling me back to safety.
But he didn't let go of my hand right away. In fact, when I tried to pull away, he held on even tighter.
"Mr. Collins..."
I called out to him, reminding him.
God knew how fast my heart was beating at that moment. Thankfully, I still had my wits about me, or I might have blurted out my feelings for him.
Christopher didn't let go despite my call. He remained calm and explained, "I wanted to check how your injury is doing."
I turned my wrist to show him. "It's much better now. Just need to apply some scar cream, and it'll be fine."
I took the opportunity to pull my hand back and waved it in front of him.
Christopher's gaze lingered on the scar for a moment before he looked away. "Alright, but you still need to rest more."
"Okay, I'll get out now."
He probably didn't realize how charming he was. The more he cared, the deeper I fell.
I quickly got out of the car.
But even so, as Christopher's car drove away, I found myself standing there, staring after it for a long time.
When I finally snapped out of it, I realized he was standing in front of his car, looking right at me.
Feeling like a thief caught red-handed, I quickly looked away and hurried into the yard.
As if running fast enough could escape the embarrassment.
But when I stopped in the yard, out of Christopher's sight, my heart was pounding.
I couldn't tell if it was because of my uncontrollable feelings for him or because I had run too fast.
That night, Christopher kept appearing in my dreams, and it wasn't until the early hours that I finally slept soundly.
Unexpectedly, someone called me early in the morning.
I groaned, covering my head with a pillow, pretending not to hear.
But the caller was persistent.
Finally, annoyed by the ringing, I sat up, ready to give the caller a piece of my mind.
"Melinda, I have two pieces of good news. Which one do you want to hear first?"
Paula's cheerful voice came through the phone before I could say anything.
Good thing she spoke quickly, or I would have started yelling.
"Paula, am I still asleep, or are you? Does it matter which one I choose?"
Both were good news, so how would I know which one to pick first?
"I was just teasing you since you sound groggy," Paula giggled.
"Well, I'm awake now. Go ahead."
Paula excitedly told me, "Mrs. Collins is back in Rosewood City! Isn't that great news? Are you surprised?"
Hearing that, my sleepiness vanished almost entirely.
"It is good news! But why so suddenly? From what I know about Mrs. Collins, she's a determined person who doesn't give up easily. Why did she suddenly decide to leave Starlight City and return to Rosewood City?"
Could it be that she just missed home?
Paula chuckled mysteriously.
She clearly had some juicy gossip.
I got out of bed to wash up, waiting for Paula to spill the beans.
She said, "It's not that she wanted to go back; she had to."
"What do you mean? Spill the tea!" I knew there was some drama.
If Faye left, I'd be the happiest person.
But after everything I had been through, I had become more reserved, unlike Paula.
Still, I was all ears for gossip.
"I must have told you before, Christopher looks a lot like his father when he was young. So you can imagine how handsome his father was. Even now, he's still quite the looker. Recently, at a reunion, Christopher's father played a duet on the piano with his college sweetheart. The piece they played was one they composed and performed together at a college event. They were the campus couple back then."
"Now, they're recreating that magic. Who knows if old flames will rekindle? Mrs. Collins must be worried. If she doesn't go back, she might end up as Christopher's father's ex-wife!"
Though being a mistress was disgraceful, if Christopher's father truly found his "true love" and divorced Faye, she wouldn't be able to do much about it.
I suddenly felt like a fortune teller. What I wished for actually came true!
"Indeed, that's fantastic news!" I laughed heartily, probably loud enough for Paula to hear through the phone.
Paula laughed proudly, "Of course! Who do you think brought you this news?"
Her self-praise was amusing.
"You wouldn't believe it. Liliana had booked the most exclusive and expensive restaurant to invite Mrs. Collins. Mrs. Collins agreed, but when she got the news, she left in a hurry without even informing Liliana. Liliana wasted a lot of money and favors. I heard she was so anxious waiting in the private room but didn't dare to rush Mrs. Collins, so she took it out on the waitstaff."
Liliana was truly foolish.
Doing that would harm both her and Faye's reputations. If word got out, it could ruin the Ellis or Collins family's name, and Liliana would be in big trouble.
"How did you not realize she was this dumb when you were dealing with her before?" I couldn't help but comment.
Paula snorted, "I was too weak back then. But that's not all; she made an even bigger mess!"
"What happened?" I was dying of curiosity.
