"You're awake. Let's check your temperature first."

Just as I feared, Christopher had a fever again.

"Take your medicine, and we'll check your temperature later."

I had been sitting by his bedside, and when I fell asleep, I was practically lying on the bed. In my rush to get up and fetch some water, I didn't realize my leg had gone numb.

As soon as I stood up, I fell right back onto the bed.

Christopher instinctively reached out to catch me, and I ended up falling into his arms.

My face turned red, and just as I was about to apologize, I heard Christopher laugh.

I felt both embarrassed and annoyed.

"Mr. Collins, do you find this funny?" I asked, unable to hide my frustration.

Christopher quickly stifled his laughter, his voice soft and gentle. "I'm not laughing at you. I just think it's funny that you've made the same silly mistake twice. It shows how often you must be clumsy."

"Mr. Collins, if you have the energy to joke around, you must be feeling much better," I replied coolly.

"Yeah, thanks to you for staying with me so late," Christopher said in a low voice. The way he said "staying with me" felt so intimate.

My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly stood up, shaking my leg to make sure it wasn't numb anymore. "If you really think I've been put out, remember to give me overtime pay," I said before hurrying out of the room to get some water and the medicine prescribed by the hospital.

Christopher obediently took the medicine in front of me, swallowing it in one gulp.

After taking the medicine, he looked up at me.

In the quiet of the night, with just the two of us in the room, even our breathing seemed amplified, creating an intimate atmosphere.

I had been alone with Christopher before, but back then, I had no other thoughts and didn't know he had feelings for me. Now, my heart was in turmoil.

Christopher suddenly spoke, "Are you scared? You took me to the hospital and stayed with me, and you didn't seem scared then."

"I'm not scared. What would I be scared of?"

Of course, I wouldn't admit it.

But Christopher was so perceptive, always noticing my emotional changes.

After I answered, I realized Christopher was deliberately trying to provoke me to distract me and help me relax.

I felt a bit petty for reacting the way I did.

"Yeah, you're not scared. Thanks for taking care of me. The guest room next door is always clean. You should go rest. You don't need to stay with me," Christopher said calmly.

He even added, "I'll make sure you get your overtime pay. Go on!"

He was responding to my earlier comment about overtime pay.

My face turned red again, feeling like he was teasing me. But I listened to Christopher and went to the guest room next door.

However, because Christopher's fever had been fluctuating, I couldn't sleep soundly, worried he might get worse in the middle of the night.

A few hours later, I went back to Christopher's room.

He was already asleep and didn't notice me coming in.

I reached out to touch his forehead. It was hot again.

I thought for a moment and then fetched a basin of water to cool his forehead with a cloth, repeating the process several times until I was sure his temperature had dropped. Only then did I feel relieved.

I went to empty the basin and was about to cover him with the blanket before leaving.

Just as I was about to leave, Christopher's hand grabbed mine. His grip was firm but gentle.

"Melinda!"

He murmured my name in his sleep.

I froze. Something stirred in my heart.

I carefully freed my hand from his grip and hurried out of his room.

I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep again, but exhaustion soon took over, and I fell asleep quickly.

I even had a sweet dream about Christopher and me.

But it was the kind of dream I couldn't share with anyone.

Maybe only in my dreams could I be with Christopher without any worries.

I knew if this continued, I would become infatuated again.

I had already decided to resign.

But seeing Christopher so sick in the car, I couldn't bring myself to burden him with my resignation, so I held back.

But I needed to write my resignation letter soon. I couldn't delay any longer.

Downstairs, I heard some noise.

I knew Tiana got up.

I quickly changed into a fresh set of clothes. The ones I wore to the hospital yesterday didn't smell great.

Luckily, because I often worked out with Christopher, I had a few spare outfits at his place, which came in handy now.

When I went downstairs, Tiana looked surprised to see me.

As a professional housekeeper, Tiana quickly regained her composure.

I didn't want her to misunderstand, so I explained, "Mr. Collins had a fever yesterday. I took him to the hospital and stayed in the guest room next door to keep an eye on him."

"What? Mr. Collins is sick? I thought you were just eager to work out today. I was going to remind you to be careful with your injured hand. Mr. Collins is usually so healthy. How did he get sick?" Tiana asked, puzzled.

I had the same question.

Remembering Christopher's explanation, I told Tiana, "Mr. Collins took a cold shower. With the temperature fluctuations and unpredictable weather, it's easy to catch a cold."

Tiana blurted out, "Mr. Collins always takes cold showers..."

Realizing she had said too much, she added, "With the weather changing so much, it's no wonder Mr. Collins caught a cold."

I nodded. "Don't worry too much, Tiana. Mr. Collins took his medicine, and I checked on him in the middle of the night. He's much better now."

Thinking about how I had repeatedly wrung out the cloth, my hands felt a bit sore, and I couldn't help but rub them.

Tiana looked at me with sympathy. "You had a tough night."

"It's my duty," I smiled. "But Mr. Collins isn't fully recovered yet, so avoid spicy food for the next couple of days."

"Got it. I'll make sure Mr. Collins eats light. What about you, Ms. Turner?"

"Don't worry about me. It's getting late. I need to get to the office."

Since Christopher was sick, he probably wouldn't go to the office today. As his secretary, I had some things to take care of.

Considering my resignation, I handled some of my regular tasks and then started drafting my resignation letter on the computer.

But once I wrote it, I didn't know how to proceed.

Maybe because I had never resigned before.

Or maybe because deep down, I didn't want to leave Christopher, whether because of my feelings for him or because I could learn so much from being around him.

But logic told me that because of my feelings for Christopher, I should resign.

Last night, when Christopher grabbed my hand and murmured my name, I almost fell for him. His handsome face flashed before me, and I felt my heart race again.

I had felt this way before when I liked Lawrence, so I knew this wasn't right.

So, I had to write this resignation letter.

I even looked up resignation letter templates online, but I couldn't decide on a reason for leaving.

Just then, I received a message from Quinlan.

She told me Marlowe was sick with leukemia, which could be fatal at any moment.

Marlowe needed a bone marrow transplant.
