Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 139
Ophelia's situation really made me reflect on myself.
That evening, I told Paula about it and shared my thoughts. "Even though Ophelia used her body to marry into a wealthy family, which is gross, the reason she looks down on me is because my skills aren't strong enough yet. Once I become powerful and competent, neither she nor anyone else will dare to slander me so easily."
I clenched my fist, determined to keep pushing forward.
Paula was inspired by my drive. She first acknowledged my ambition, "This dog-eat-dog world is just like that! Think about why Ophelia dared to come after you but wouldn't dare to go directly to Mr. Collins. It's the same principle. But Melinda, while I support your ambition, take things step by step. Don't wear yourself out or put too much pressure on yourself. I care about you."
"Alright, I got it. Too bad I didn't record it so you could see how I shut her up," I replied proudly.
Paula chuckled, "That's easy. I'll ask them to pull the security footage. I have to see Ophelia's smug face."
"Great idea!" My eyes lit up, and I even asked her to send me a copy of the video if she got it.
I wasn't sure if Ophelia had gone back to tell Alan, but I followed Christopher's instructions and sent the evaluation results to Alan's email.
The next day, Alan came to the office, probably hoping to make a last-ditch effort.
Unfortunately, Christopher was in a remote meeting, so I led Alan to the guest room.
I had imagined Alan to be a rough-looking man, but he turned out to be in his thirties, not as handsome as Christopher, but well-dressed in a suit, with a gentle demeanor and a warm smile.
So, despite keeping a mistress, with Paula's PR company's help, his public image wasn't too bad. God did seem to favor good-looking people.
Out of courtesy, I prepared coffee for him. "Mr. Bennett, Mr. Collins will be with you shortly. Please have some coffee while you wait."
I slightly bowed, placed the coffee on the table in front of him, and turned to leave.
"You're Mr. Collins' new secretary, Melinda, right?" Alan smiled, his eyes narrowing, but his hand was restless, reaching out to grab mine, his gaze lingering on my butt.
His lecherous look made me feel sick.
I quickly stepped back, avoiding his hand. If he weren't the president of Quantum Dynamics Corporation, I would have slapped his hand away.
No wonder Ophelia could hook up with him. People like him never knew restraint. I suspected that when Ophelia first met him, he probably groped her. But between Ophelia and him, who was the prey was uncertain. Maybe they both got what they wanted.
They were two of a kind. Since they got married, it was a blessing for society.
But Alan was too bold, acting so brazenly on our first meeting. From his words, it seemed Ophelia had badmouthed me to him.
I coldly reminded him, "Mr. Bennett, please show some respect!"
"Playing hard to get, are we? Or just pretending to be innocent in front of me?" As Alan spoke, his hand reached for my butt again.
At that moment, I dodged and Christopher saw this as he entered the room.
With a swift motion, Christopher pulled me behind him, shielding me completely. Glenn, who was with him, also moved aside, blocking me from view.
Seeing this, Alan's smile deepened, with a hint of meaning. "Mr. Collins, it's the first time I've seen you protect an employee like this." His eyes were suggestive.
Christopher frowned, speaking coldly, "Mr. Bennett, it seems you're not here to discuss business but have other intentions."
Alan quickly put on a serious face, smiling, "Mr. Collins, you misunderstand. I heard you hired a new secretary, a lady, and I was curious. Anyone who catches your eye must be interesting, though a bit timid!"
Christopher didn't take it as a joke, his expression growing darker, exuding a dangerous aura.
"Mr. Bennett, this isn't Quantum Dynamics Corporation, and my secretary isn't timid. If she was scared, it wasn't a simple joke. I think we need to check the security footage." His words were firm, his gaze sharp on Alan.
Alan's face changed slightly but quickly returned to normal. He insincerely apologized, "No need to check the footage. We have important matters to discuss. I apologize to this timid secretary. You wouldn't want this to affect our cooperation, would you? Let's not mention it again."
His apology lacked sincerity and carried a veiled threat.
I was also considering whether to make a fuss, worried it might negatively impact Summit Innovations Group.
Christopher's gaze turned cold. "Mr. Bennett, let's set aside the cooperation for now. If we are to work together, my secretary will handle the details. If something like this happens again, it will affect our cooperation even more."
He signaled Glenn to check the security footage.
Alan's face darkened. "Mr. Collins, you've never had a female secretary before. We men understand. I didn't go too far, just a touch, and I didn't even make contact..."
His eyes deliberately roamed over my chest and butt.
Christopher's demeanor changed, his gaze icy. But he didn't immediately address Alan. Instead, he looked at me. "What did I teach you the other day?"
I was speechless.
He added, "At Summit Innovations Group, we don't start trouble, but we don't fear it either. Do you know what to do?"
I met Christopher's deep, angry eyes.
This time, I understood his meaning. If he wanted me to apologize to Alan, he wouldn't be so cold towards him or insist on checking the footage.
I tightened my fist, stepped out from behind him, and suddenly slapped Alan.
Alan didn't expect me to strike. In his eyes, I was insignificant. Being slapped by someone he considered beneath him, he stood up abruptly. "You little b..."
But before he could finish, Christopher slapped him on the other cheek. "Do I need to teach you again? If someone disrespects you, don't hold back!"
Alan's face swelled instantly, showing how hard Christopher hit.
And he did it right in front of me, making Alan both angry and humiliated. "Mr. Collins, isn't this too much, just for a woman?"
