Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 225
Vanguard Motors, Inc. had just gotten the blueprints from Marlowe and was now full steam ahead on developing a new car. Word on the street was their new smart car was almost ready and would be revealed soon.
Not too long ago, Vanguard Motors had released a smart car that wowed everyone, and now they were gearing up to launch a new model, which had everyone buzzing. Naturally, the success of their first model only ramped up the excitement among their fans.
Over at AutoForge Workshop, even though we heard the news from Vanguard Motors, we didn't let it throw us off our game. We kept plugging away at our research, design, and model-making. This meant lots of back-and-forth about the blueprints, so Christopher and Marlowe were in touch more often. Sometimes, they even grabbed a bite together.
The gossip reporters were all over Christopher's private life, always on the hunt for juicy photos. They snapped a shot of Christopher having dinner alone with Marlowe. Besides me, his secretary, Marlowe was the only woman who had dined alone with Christopher. Plus, Christopher had recently given Marlowe an exclusive interview.
Christopher had also let slip that he had someone he liked, which led to a lot of online speculation that the person he liked was Marlowe.
AutoForge Workshop's smart car was also about to hit mass production, so our marketing efforts were in full swing. But people seemed more interested in Christopher's love life.
This wasn't exactly a secret, so Paula had heard about it too. She didn't think much of Marlowe and was a bit annoyed. "Is Christopher finally waking up and making a move on her?"
"I don't know, probably not. If he was, Marlowe would be bragging about it. But who knows, maybe their feelings could grow because of work," I guessed.
Paula sighed, "The thought of Christopher liking someone like her makes me uneasy. If they get married, I feel like you'll be the one to suffer, Melinda."
"She made peace with me last time, so maybe she's not that bad," I said, trying to stay positive.
"I doubt it. She could be faking it," Paula disagreed.
I thought of another issue. "Faye has high standards. I doubt she'd let Christopher marry Marlowe. So don't worry, Christopher hasn't even confessed his feelings yet. Even if they get together, they might face family opposition. It's a long road ahead."
"You're right," Paula conceded. "Let's not worry about it."
It was a good thing we talked about Christopher in private. If he knew, he'd probably be upset. After all, he was working hard to pursue the person he liked, and here we were, doubting him.
As the car model reached its final testing stage, I got busier and didn't have much time to think about Christopher's love life. Then, I got a call from Fallon.
She told me, "Lawrence's execution date has been set."
"Okay," I replied.
I hadn't thought about Lawrence in ages. When people brought him up, I felt nothing. Hearing this news, I felt a moment of confusion, followed by a sense of closure.
"Lawrence wants to see you. He says he has something you might want to know," Fallon relayed his request.
But I was unmoved. "What could he possibly say? It doesn't matter. I don't trust him, and I don't care about anything he has to say. I've been fine without his so-called information, so I won't see him."
I was firm in my decision. Fallon, my lawyer, was just passing on the message and didn't try to persuade me.
She did share Lawrence's words, "He said he's about to die, and everything he says is true. There's no need to lie to you."
"He's just trying to get something out of this. I don't believe he's truly repentant," I said. Missy was still alive, and she was the only one he cared about. His request was probably about her.
Since discovering his true nature, I had become adept at seeing through his intentions. I had been too naive to be deceived by him before.
Still, the news about Lawrence affected my mood. To distract myself, I threw myself into preparing for the launch of our new smart car. The results were impressive. The new model met our expectations in both performance and appearance.
However, Vanguard Motors launched their new car first. This led to more people doubting AutoForge Workshop, saying we were outdated and couldn't keep up with the times.
When we finally launched our new car, we were immediately attacked online. Critics had prepared their reviews, focusing on the car's appearance and performance, even comparing it to Vanguard Motors' new model. But they were surprised to find that our car's design was aesthetically pleasing, making their criticisms laughable.
As for performance, true car enthusiasts found that our smart car outshone the competition. This was partly thanks to Christopher's idea of offering free test drives. People who tried our car realized its quality, leading to a positive shift in online reviews and a surge in sales.
Christopher was in a good mood. Many people invited him to various events because of the new car, and he attended, drinking and socializing. Tonight, he had clearly had a lot to drink.
We were sitting in the car, and Christopher's face was flushed from the alcohol. He was unsteady and leaned towards me. I quickly supported him.
In his drunken state, Christopher seemed to hug me unconsciously. His voice was low and husky, yet magnetic. "Melinda, I'm so happy!"
His voice made me tense up, and I felt my blood run cold.
"Did you just call me Melinda?" I stared at him, feeling a mix of emotions.
That simple name, spoken in such a deep, magnetic voice, took me back to the night I lost myself. The man who held me that night had a similar voice when he whispered my name.
Christopher looked confused and innocent. "What's wrong?"
Seeing his clueless expression, I couldn't help but smile bitterly. It seemed I was overthinking things.
