Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 274
Hearing him say that, I felt a bit guilty.
As Christopher's secretary, I should have known about this.
Fortunately, Christopher was understanding and didn't hold it against me.
I followed him to the room next door.
Inside, someone was already waiting.
When I saw who it was, I was surprised. It was Randy, the richest man in Starlight City and Paula's father.
I had seen him once from a distance when I was with Paula.
But Paula and her father had a distant relationship, so that was the only time I saw him, and Randy didn't know me.
I was a bit puzzled about why he wanted to meet with Christopher.
Then it hit me. Paula had mentioned that Randy had won a day with a big shot at an auction.
Maybe Randy had met with that mysterious big shot and found a good project, so he wanted to discuss a collaboration with Christopher.
Randy seemed like a gentle and approachable billionaire.
They said the higher up someone was, the more humble they became.
Facing a younger person like Christopher, he was still very polite and warm. "It's an honor to meet you, Mr. Collins."
His enthusiasm was undeniable!
Of course, it might be because he was meeting Christopher.
Young and accomplished, Christopher was the head of the Collins family in Rosewood City.
"Mr. Collins, you are truly impressive for your age. I am getting old..."
Randy sighed, but his eyes were full of admiration as he looked at Christopher, clearly very satisfied.
He was even kind to me and Vincent, Christopher's employees.
"You two must be Mr. Collins' trusted assistants. Please, have a seat!" Randy invited us warmly.
He seemed genuinely sincere, but Vincent and I had met many CEOs, so we didn't take it too seriously and sat down humbly.
Even though Randy was talking to Christopher, he didn't ignore us.
In fact, his words were quite pleasant.
"This young lady looks very familiar. Impressive, capable, and with a good character. No wonder Mr. Collins has an eye for talent!" Randy praised.
I thought it was just polite talk, but Christopher actually smiled and agreed, "Indeed!"
Christopher's simple response made Randy look at me twice. "I feel like I've seen you somewhere before."
It wasn't just a familiar face.
"Yes, I had a brief encounter with you, Mr. Ellis," I said, still surprised that he had actually noticed me back then.
Did this mean he was paying close attention to Paula?
But thinking about how Paula left the Ellis Villa and went through so much hardship, it didn't seem likely.
Paula had other relatives, half-siblings, but she was the recognized heir. Over the years, she had made a name for herself, and rumors about her were more about her mystery and prowess.
Randy might have remembered or it was just a coincidence, but he mentioned Paula, "You look about the same age as my daughter. She's very ambitious and wanted to make her own way. Fortunately, she's capable and has made a name for herself. As young people, I wonder if she and Mr. Collins have anything in common to talk about."
When Randy said this, his eyes were full of admiration and eagerness as he looked at Christopher.
I could see it clearly. It was the look of a father-in-law eyeing a potential son-in-law.
So, Randy was interested in setting up Paula with Christopher.
In the past, I would have thought they were a perfect match, both talented and well-suited for each other. I would have fully supported it.
But ever since I found out that the man from that night was Christopher, I felt uneasy.
I thought Christopher admired Paula, at least didn't reject her, and they could develop something.
But then Christopher said, "I've heard of Ms. Ellis, both her law firm and her work in PR and entertainment."
"It seems you two have a lot to talk about!" Randy laughed, pleased with Christopher's praise of Paula.
Christopher's eyes flickered, probably catching Randy's hint.
He then added, "She would make a great business partner!"
So, just a business partner.
Nothing more.
Randy understood and didn't push the topic of Paula further. Everyone was dignified, and it wouldn't be good to sour the relationship if a marriage didn't work out.
They continued discussing investments.
I was listening intently when suddenly there was a commotion outside.
Worried about Paula, my first thought was that it might be her outside.
"Mr. Collins, I need to step out for a moment!"
I couldn't hold back any longer and quickly got up to leave.
Randy gave me a strange look, probably because of my impulsiveness, and Christopher's leniency.
I didn't explain my reasons.
As I opened the door, Randy's gaze returned to the room.
Because of the open door, a familiar voice reached everyone's ears, including Randy's.
"Behave yourself. Today, you brought this on yourself. If it were someone else, you might not be alive to struggle here!"
It was Paula's voice.
Strong and full of energy, even scolding someone, she seemed fine.
I breathed a sigh of relief and hurried out to find Paula.
Randy recognized Paula's voice too, his face changed, and he quickly followed me out.
We saw Stefan tied up on the ground, and Paula standing over him, looking down with a mocking expression.
In that moment, she was like a queen ruling over everything!
When Paula saw me, she was about to boast, "Melinda, I told you not to worry, right? I..."
She didn't finish her sentence before meeting Randy's concerned eyes. "What happened? Are you hurt?"
Stefan, tied up on the ground, called out several times, seemingly trying to remind Randy to look at him, his eyes saying, 'Mr. Ellis, I'm the one in trouble here!'
But Randy completely ignored Stefan, his eyes still on Paula.
Paula frowned, not expecting her father. The relaxation and joy she showed me vanished instantly.
Her tone was cold and distant, "It's none of your business!"
Randy's eyes showed a flash of sadness and disappointment.
But he only managed to say, "Nonsense!"
Paula's eyes held a hint of sarcasm.
She looked at Randy, "I'll handle it. You can check later, but I'm afraid you won't like the results!"
Her gaze seemed to pierce through Randy's soul.
They were both smart, and Randy immediately understood her meaning.
"Fine, you handle it. Just give me the results later!" Randy surprisingly agreed to her wishes.
But then he stepped aside to make a phone call.
Seeing Randy leave, Paula relaxed again and even pulled me close, acting all sweet.
Clearly, she knew that making decisions on her own might have upset me, so she was trying to make up for it.
