Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 136
After I hung up the phone, it wasn't long before I got an email from Paula.
The email had some basic info about Alan's wife, Ophelia Blake.
Ophelia, 25 years old, graduated from a regular university in Silverpeak City. After graduation, she landed a job at Horizon Innovations as a secretary assistant. Within a year, she became the president's secretary.
Less than two months into her new role, she attended a banquet with the president and met the CEO of Quantum Solutions Ltd. She soon switched jobs to Quantum Solutions Ltd. However, she stayed there for less than three months before meeting Alan, and they got married shortly after.
Just from this resume, it was clear that she frequently changed jobs in a short period, each time moving to a higher position. It was quite impressive.
However, Quantum Solutions Ltd, which served as a stepping stone, disappeared from the investment scene. My gut told me there was more to this story.
But for now, it had nothing to do with Summit Innovations Group, so I didn't want to overthink it.
I didn't expect Paula to be right. She said someone might be watching me, and it happened sooner than I thought.
The next day, as soon as I got to the company entrance, a well-dressed middle-aged man stopped me.
Despite his neat appearance, he had a sinister look and a disdainful gaze that made me uncomfortable.
"Are you Mr. Collins' personal secretary, Melinda?" He emphasized "personal secretary" with a suggestive tone, and I got what he was implying.
I didn't want to engage with someone with such a dirty mind. I tried to walk past him.
Seeing that I ignored him, the middle-aged man frowned and tried to grab me. "You can't leave!"
I quickly dodged his disgusting hand, stepping back to put some distance between us.
I coldly asked, "Who are you? What are you doing here? Yes, I'm Mr. Collins' secretary, but not his personal assistant."
So there was no such thing as a "personal" secretary.
The middle-aged man sneered even more at my explanation. "Whether you're personal or not, everyone knows. Why pretend to be so high and mighty? My boss is the wife of the CEO of Quantum Dynamics Corporation, and she wants to see you."
He probably thought I had an inappropriate relationship with Christopher, so he assumed his boss wanting to see me was a favor. He expected me to be grateful. But I wasn't.
"I don't know her, so there's no need to meet!" I refused outright.
His smug expression froze, then turned to anger. "You're just a secretary. My boss wants to see you, and that's a favor. You better be sensible!"
As he spoke, he tried to grab me again.
I was already annoyed, and now he was crossing the line, trying to force me.
I slapped his hand away hard. "You're the one who's not being sensible. I'm about to be late, so I won't waste time with you. If your boss wants to talk about business, she can make an appointment with Mr. Collins. There's nothing for me to discuss with her."
My slap echoed loudly in the open entrance, drawing some curious glances.
The middle-aged man, now furious, shouted, "You ungrateful woman! Today, you must come with me to see my boss!" He lunged at me, trying to drag me away.
My face darkened. I pulled out a homemade pepper spray that Paula had given me for protection. I sprayed it at him while shouting, "Can't you understand human language? I said I'm not going! This is a law-abiding society. Do you think you can kidnap me in broad daylight?"
"What did you spray on me, you bitch?" The middle-aged man screamed, waving his hands wildly.
I saw a security guard looking our way and shouted, "Help! Someone help! I'm an employee here, and this pervert is trying to assault me. Help!"
I ran towards the security guard.
My words enraged the middle-aged man. He chased after me, ignoring the pain in his eyes. "Shut up, you idiot! I'm giving you a chance, and you're too stupid to take it. Get back here!"
Just as he was about to catch up to me, I hid behind the security guard, looking pitiful. "I'd be an idiot to go with you. Sir, he's a pervert and a human trafficker. Please catch him. I'm scared!"
The security guard understood immediately and didn't give the middle-aged man a chance to resist. He grabbed the man's outstretched hand, twisted it behind his back, and pinned him to the ground.
"Let go! I'm not a pervert..." The middle-aged man tried to resist, but he was no match for the security guard. The guards in this building were all ex-military, highly skilled, and full of justice.
After detaining the man, the guard called the police. When the police arrived, I gave a brief statement. There were surveillance cameras and the guard's testimony, so I was quickly able to leave.
I called Vincent to ask for a leave of absence. With the troublemaker caught, I wasn't too shaken by the incident.
I went to the office and started my usual work.
The investigation results for Quantum Dynamics Corporation and Horizon Innovations were ready. I prepared all the research materials and knocked on the president's office door.
"Mr. Collins, here is the invitation list for the international exhibition and the investigation results. Horizon Innovations didn't pass the risk assessment. Here are the research materials for your review."
Christopher first scanned the invitation list for the international exhibition.
He always had a tight schedule, so he only attended highly valuable meetings. Such exhibitions were platforms to showcase the company's products and ideas. Being invited was a testament to the company's strength.
Christopher needed to select potential partners from the list. If there were no particularly valuable opportunities, he wouldn't attend.
While he was focused on the documents, I noticed his half-empty, slightly cold coffee and decided to get him a fresh cup.
When I returned with the coffee, Vincent was in the office.
Christopher was still reviewing the documents. When he saw Vincent, his sharp eyes looked up. "Prepare a reward gift for the security team to thank them for protecting our employee today."
Hearing Christopher's words, my hand holding the coffee trembled slightly.
