Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 101
I instinctively felt it was too much trouble and worried that Christopher had other things to do.
"Christopher, it's fine. I'll just grab a cab home. I don't want to bother you. If you have stuff to do, go ahead."
He had already gone out of his way to personally take me to the prison this morning, which was a big favor. So, I felt a bit embarrassed and immediately declined, not wanting to delay him further.
But Christopher said, "We live in the same area. It's on the way. I'll take you."
We did live close to each other. Christopher, being the reserved person he was, didn't talk much. But his lack of words could easily lead to misunderstandings.
As soon as he said that, I could feel Fallon's shocked and meaningful gaze.
"Got it." Her look then turned into one of understanding and realization.
I quickly explained, "No, it's just that my place is next to Christopher's. That's what he meant."
Fallon nodded, but I still felt her eyes darting between Christopher and me, and I could sense a hint of ambiguity in her gaze.
I glanced at Christopher, signaling him to explain further.
Given my current reputation, it wouldn't be good for Christopher's image.
Besides, Fallon worked at Christopher's investment company. Even though I knew Fallon probably wouldn't spread rumors, what if she accidentally let something slip?
Christopher remained calm, seemingly oblivious to my signals.
Soon, we arrived at the office entrance, and the chance for Christopher to explain was missed.
After Fallon got out of the car, I couldn't help but say to Christopher, "Christopher, why didn't you explain earlier? Your words were so ambiguous; it's easy for people to misunderstand. If Fallon accidentally spreads it, it might affect your chances of finding someone."
Christopher turned his deep gaze to me. "Is it such a burden to be associated with me?"
I quickly shook my head. "That's not what I meant. If anyone's burdened, it's you. You're a high-quality single guy, much better than a divorced woman like me."
"For those who care about you, you're the best. Don't belittle yourself," Christopher suddenly said.
For some reason, my heart warmed. It felt like being valued, and it made me happy.
My ears turned a bit red as I looked at Christopher, catching a glimpse of his perfect jawline and sharp nose. He seemed to exude charm effortlessly.
I almost blushed. Thankfully, my phone rang, pulling me back to reality.
"Hello, yes... Okay, I'll be there on time tomorrow."
The call was from a company I had sent my resume to, asking me to attend an interview at 10 AM the next day.
I was thrilled. It seemed like my luck had improved since leaving Lawrence, the bad man.
Regardless of whether I passed the interview, it was a good start.
Christopher glanced at me, and I smiled politely at him. After all, I was in a good mood.
But since I hadn't succeeded in the interview yet, I didn't want to tell Christopher. It was better to keep things quiet until they were certain.
Besides, it would be embarrassing to get excited over a small interview in front of someone as accomplished as Christopher.
Seeing that I didn't say anything, Christopher didn't push it.
Soon, we arrived at the villa. I quickly said goodbye to Christopher and headed inside.
To prepare for the interview, I gathered all the necessary documents and certificates, rehearsed potential questions in my mind, and laid out my outfit for the next day.
The interview was for a translator position, so I chose a white blouse and a knee-length black skirt, aiming for a look that was professional yet elegant.
After finishing all this, it was getting dark. I made some pasta for dinner and went to bed early to be in good shape for the new beginning.
The next day, I arrived at the interview site on time.
The first round was a written test, translating a set of questions. Since I often used foreign languages, it wasn't too difficult for me.
As expected, I quickly passed the first round.
The second round involved several interviewers.
One of them, a slightly bald man, looked at me with surprise, then glanced back and forth between my face and my resume before asking, "Are you the victim from the wife-killing case, Melinda?"
I didn't expect to be recognized. But since I was, I nodded openly.
I then saw the interviewers whispering among themselves.
Finally, they told me, "Ms. Turner, we sympathize with what you've been through and acknowledge your abilities. However, considering all factors and the company's interests, we can't proceed with your application. We hope you understand."
I didn't argue with the interviewers and left.
On the way back, the more I thought about it, the more upset I became.
I was a victim too. I had no choice but to expose Lawrence's crimes to the public to prevent him from harming others. Was that wrong?
They rejected me, citing my instability, just because I answered honestly. It was a heavy blow.
I felt so frustrated that I didn't want to go home. That place used to be so warm, filled with laughter and my parents' caring words.
Now, I remembered the saying: Losing a loved one was not a storm but a lifelong drizzle. Every time I thought about it, it hurt deeply.
Feeling down, I didn't go home immediately. I wandered around Starlight City, visiting places I wanted to go.
As it got dark, I found a bar and started drinking.
Maybe it was intentional, or maybe I had been through too much. Now that I felt somewhat alive again, I wanted to drink and let it out. So, I drank quite a bit.
Under the influence of alcohol, my suppressed grievances magnified.
I couldn't help but call Paula, choking up, "Paula, why? Was it wrong to tell the truth? Faced with Lawrence's betrayal and schemes, I had no choice but to expose his crimes and send him to jail to protect others. Was that wrong? I'd rather they said I wasn't professional enough than reject me for this reason. Did I really do something wrong?"
I then learned that Paula was out of town for a case and didn't have much time to talk.
She briefly comforted me, "You did nothing wrong. The fault lies with those who are biased against you."
She asked where I was, reminded me to stay safe, and had to hang up.
