Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 117
Actually, the box didn't have anything particularly valuable; it was just a box of truffle chocolates.
There were several boxes. He was worried I might get too emotional, so he gave me some chocolates to help calm me down with their sweetness.
The rest were chocolates he had bought a long time ago, saying no one else ate them, so he gave them all to me.
"Mr. Turner was still alive when I was abroad. He asked me to bring these back for you, so they were always meant to be yours," Christopher said, looking at me.
Tears streamed down my face. My dad had already passed away. But his love always quietly took root in my heart. Every time I discovered or remembered it, the pain was so intense I could hardly breathe.
"Don't cry!" Christopher probably didn't expect me to burst into tears and got a bit flustered. He instinctively raised his hand to wipe my tears but then realized it might be inappropriate and handed me a tissue instead.
I noticed his movement, my heart skipped a beat, and I quickly took the tissue to wipe my tears, feeling awkward.
I remembered what had happened in court earlier.
Before the trial even started, Lawrence saw Christopher and got agitated. Then he realized none of his family members were present, and even Clara, his last hope, didn't show up.
Lawrence's emotions were visibly off. He ignored the police warnings, struggling and shouting at me, "Melinda, you set me up, you'll die a horrible death, you..."
"Order in the court!" The police warned him again, but Lawrence wouldn't stop. His eyes darted between Christopher and me, as if he wanted to kill us.
I wasn't even that upset, but Paula next to me couldn't hold back and started cursing at Lawrence.
"The one who deserves a horrible death is you, you bastard. Melinda is the best. Just wait, when you die, I'll scatter your ashes so you won't have a resting place. Melinda will live a great life without you, find a man a thousand times better than you, and we'll visit your scattered ashes to show you how happy she is."
"You bitch, don't take pictures of me, take pictures of that bitch. She's the one with a wicked heart, plotting against her husband, ruining his reputation, and now she wants to be happy with her lover!" Lawrence's eyes were bloodshot as he cursed at the photographers, trying to direct their attention to me.
Paula, furious, rolled up her sleeves, ready to charge at him.
I knew this couldn't happen. If Paula hit him, she'd be charged with contempt of court.
I quickly grabbed Paula. "Paula, don't be impulsive. Lawrence will be punished soon. Don't fall into his trap."
The commotion was too much. The plaintiff and defendant were causing such a scene before the trial even started, and the people in the courtroom were all talking.
Paula calmed down a bit after hearing me, but she kept cursing Lawrence.
Lawrence kept struggling and cursing back at Paula.
At that moment, Christopher, who had been quiet beside me, suddenly stood up.
My eyes widened. I remembered the day Lawrence's family came to cause trouble, and Christopher had kicked one of them away.
Instinctively, I hugged Christopher. "Don't do anything rash, it's not worth it!"
Christopher stiffened, his eyes darkened, but he quickly realized the situation, especially with so many cameras around. He deliberately said loudly, "Melinda, even if you're mad at Lawrence, you shouldn't mistake me for Paula. She's on your other side."
Hearing Christopher's words, my mind went blank. I had been so emotional that I forgot.
Luckily, Paula quickly reacted and pulled me into a hug. "Melinda, I'm here. It's all Lawrence's fault for making you so mad. You were trying to stop me from causing trouble but turned the wrong way and hugged the wrong person!"
I understood Paula's intention. They were protecting my reputation.
Even though Lawrence and I were in a bitter fight, we weren't divorced yet, and this was a courtroom with several reporters present.
If I hugged another man in front of Lawrence, the reporters could twist the story, and my reputation would be ruined.
More importantly, it would drag Christopher down. I could handle it, but Christopher had helped me so much. Such a good person shouldn't be tainted because of me.
"I'm sorry, I was just so mad at Lawrence's shamelessness. But Paula, I believe the judge will be fair and just. You need to calm down too."
Paula patted my shoulder. "Alright, we'll both calm down."
Lawrence, however, kept cursing at me, "You bitch, I knew you were involved with other men. Now you're not even hiding it, flirting with another man right in front of me."
"You wretched woman, no wonder you plotted against me. Just wait, I won't let you off..." As Lawrence cursed, his mouth started twitching, and his body began to shake violently.
Paula and I were stunned, not understanding what was happening to Lawrence.
The next moment, he collapsed to the ground, twitching a couple of times, his mouth twisted, looking like he had fainted from the shock.
Paula and I exchanged a glance, understanding Lawrence's act.
"That bastard is faking it. His acting is too good," Paula cursed angrily.
Even if we said Lawrence was faking, the police had to take him for a full check-up to ensure his condition before making any further decisions.
I frowned, my face dark. Lawrence's act meant the next trial would be delayed indefinitely.
I had to admit, besides being a good actor, Lawrence was smart, trying to escape punishment and delay the trial.
Not long after we got back, Jason, who was keeping an eye on Lawrence's condition, reported that Lawrence was out of immediate danger but still unconscious.
"Still upset?" Christopher asked, frowning when I didn't speak.
His voice pulled me out of my thoughts about the trial. I shook my head, but thinking about the photos on my phone, I couldn't help but apologize, "Mr. Collins, I'm really sorry about the trial. If there are any negative rumors about you, feel free to blame me. I was too impulsive."
Thinking back, I was indeed impulsive.
Christopher, being so smart and rational, wouldn't lose his cool and hit Lawrence, even if he cared for me because of my parents.
I was really out of my mind.
