Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 293

Paula puffed out her chest with a hint of pride.

"I've seen plenty of people like her. They're the most ruthless. No wonder Mr. Collins, as tough as he is, got messed up by her."

Paula couldn't help but add her two cents.

She was right.

Whenever I faced Faye, I always felt an involuntary chill.

Paula suddenly seemed to remember something and said, "How did she know about our injuries?"

"Marlowe?" I said it out loud but then quickly shook my head.

"No, that can't be right. Marlowe should still be in the hospital, so she wouldn't have seen Faye."

Paula frowned. "Mrs. Collins is super suspicious!"

Of course, this was just our suspicion, without any evidence.

And while Marlowe might not have met Faye in person, she could have contacted her by phone.

But thinking that Faye's attention on Paula was because of me, I felt a bit guilty.

"You've been hanging out with me too much lately. I suspect Mrs. Collins has been secretly watching me, and I accidentally dragged you into this," I apologized.

If we weren't both lying in hospital beds, Paula might have knocked me on the head.

"What nonsense are you talking about? Do you really need to be so formal with me?" Paula looked angry. "The one at fault is Mrs. Faye Collins. You're punishing yourself for someone else's mistake. Besides, the real troublemaker for both of us is Mr. Christopher Collins, isn't it?"

Paula knew how to comfort people.

I thought about what she said and realized she had a point.

I was about to nod in agreement.

Then I remembered, no, Christopher was my boss. It was my duty to help him.

Besides, he had helped me a lot in the past.

"What are you thinking about now? Christopher? That's not entirely out of the question," Paula teased again.

I quickly pulled out my laptop to change the subject. "I need to get back to work. I have a pile of documents to handle."

Paula chuckled.

Thankfully, she didn't call me out.

She even had the leisure to take a photo of her bracelet and post it online.

Paula did it on purpose, but I played along, commenting: [Looks great!]

After that, I really got into my work.

I wasn't lying; being hospitalized during work hours had indeed delayed my tasks.

I opened my email and prepared to continue working.

Suddenly, a new email notification popped up. I clicked on it.

It was from the lip-reading expert Paula had introduced to me.

The person had translated the conversation in the video.

In the video, besides Faye and Alvin Jordan from Echo Magazine, there was also her driver.

I originally thought the main discussion was between Faye and Alvin, but it turned out the main conversation was between her driver and Alvin.

Driver: "As Ms. Grey's boss, you should be more considerate and caring since she's hospitalized. Mrs. Collins is very fond of Ms. Grey and was heartbroken to hear about her hospitalization."

Alvin: "I feel guilty and worried since Ms. Grey got injured during work. Thankfully, it's not serious."

Driver: "Almost crippled, and you call that not serious? Is that your attitude? This is a work injury. Don't you have any compensation or gestures?"

Alvin was sweating bullets.

A driver could make him so uneasy. If he faced Faye directly, who knew how scared he'd be.

This was the pressure of the powerful over the powerless.

Alvin had no choice. "Of course, there will be compensation."

Driver: "You should reflect on this. I heard it was because you sent Ms. Grey on a last-minute business trip that this accident happened."

Alvin immediately protested.

Alvin: "I'm just a small magazine owner. How could I defy Mr. Collins? He ordered it, and I just followed."

The driver seemed to want this answer.

So the rest of the conversation was the driver urging Alvin to go to the hospital and explain to Marlowe that it was Christopher who arranged the business trip.

Thinking back, it was shortly after this meeting that Marlowe disappeared from the hospital.

She probably sat on her balcony, thinking a lot.

She must have realized then that Christopher didn't deny liking her to protect her; he simply never cared about her.

He even used his power to force Alvin to send her on a business trip to keep her from attending the Collins family dinner.

That driver was quite something, guiding Alvin to the hospital to explain the truth to Marlowe, while reminding him that it had nothing to do with Faye.

"What are you looking at?"

I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn't notice Paula had come over and was peering at my phone screen.

I was so startled my heart nearly jumped out of my chest. "You scared me to death!"

I wasn't exaggerating; my face had turned pale from the fright.

Paula noticed and quickly apologized, "My bad, sorry. I won't do it again."

"You still want a next time?"

Though I sounded angry, I handed her the video.

"Is this the video you wanted the lip-reading expert for?" When I asked Paula for the contact, she didn't ask much and just gave me the number.

So she didn't know about the video.

"I happened to pass by and, on a whim, decided to record it," I admitted.

Paula gave me a thumbs up. "That wasn't just a coincidence. Didn't I tell you? To do detective work, you need some talent. And it seems you have it. You're a natural!"

I was embarrassed by Paula's praise.

"Stop exaggerating. I'm not that great."

Paula smiled. "I don't lie. I just tell the truth."

She could multitask, joking with me while watching the video.

But after watching, she frowned. "Marlowe finding out the truth should have made her furious. This sudden enlightenment seems fishy!"

"I think so too. Quinlan also mentioned to me that she didn't believe Marlowe changed so suddenly."

"If that's the case, Marlowe could be dangerous. What if she's plotting something?" I started to worry. With Hayes doing better and our company stabilizing, any sudden trouble would hit Christopher the hardest.

Paula patted my shoulder. "Nothing's happened yet. Now that we know, we can prevent it. No need to be so tense. Whether she's truly changed or plotting, we can test her."

"Alright, we'll find a chance to test her," I agreed with Paula's plan.

But this wasn't a small matter, so I sent the video to Christopher, explaining our suspicions to make him aware.

Christopher didn't reply immediately, but I wasn't in a rush.

Marlowe was still in the hospital, so she wouldn't act too soon.
