Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 179
Christopher lifted his gaze and shot her a sharp, icy look. "You're getting off track."
Marlowe, however, wasn't ready to back down. She still wanted to steer the interview, hoping Christopher would follow her lead. "According to your reaction, can I take that as an acknowledgment there's a risk?"
Christopher didn't get angry. But he didn't indulge her either. He replied coldly, "Speculation isn't part of a journalist's professional ethics."
Marlowe was momentarily at a loss for words but still tried to salvage the situation.
Christopher cut her off with a frosty tone, "Questions about AI specialization and future development have been thoroughly addressed in the company's special section. If you have doubts, don't overinterpret. Just check the section; it will answer all your concerns. My time is limited. If there are no more important questions, we'll end here for today."
Clearly, Marlowe's earlier attempt to take control had annoyed Christopher. He made a move to get up and leave.
Marlowe's grip on her notes tightened. She was well aware of Christopher's mood.
Moreover, Christopher's last response had lumped her in with those who overinterpreted. She felt embarrassed, seeing he was about to leave.
Marlowe couldn't care about her own feelings anymore. She blurted out, "Mr. Collins, one last question—are you single?"
I didn't expect Marlowe to be so blunt. Did this mean she actually cared about this? Could it be that she liked Christopher? If so, didn't that mean they both had feelings for each other?
I was curious to see how Christopher would respond.
"For now, yes. But maybe not for long." Christopher sure was confident.
But treating Marlowe like this today, could he really win her over? No way! If it weren't for the setting, I'd be rolling my eyes.
Marlowe's eyes flickered, and she couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Collins, do you have someone you like?" From his words, it sounded like he had a target in mind. If Christopher admitted it, and she found out who he liked, the magazine sales would skyrocket.
What was going on? From Marlowe's reaction, it seemed she didn't know Christopher liked her. Could it be that Christopher, despite his imposing and fearless demeanor, didn't dare to confess? So she didn't know?
I thought, 'If Christopher musters the courage to confess, would they quickly become a couple? Marlowe clearly has feelings for him.'
"Yes! And it has never changed." Christopher was truly devoted!
Any girl would be moved to know such a handsome and wealthy man had been consistently devoted to her. Christopher really didn't know how to use his advantages.
Marlowe continued the interview, "What kind of girl do you like?"
"Kind, straightforward, strong, brave! She faces challenges head-on, never gives up, and is full of energy. Mostly smart, occasionally a bit clumsy, which is rather cute!" He listed her qualities as if they were precious treasures.
It seemed like she had no flaws in his eyes. And when he talked about the person he liked, one could easily feel his tenderness. But this tenderness was reserved for just one person.
I wanted to say, 'Christopher, just look at Marlowe. If you gaze at her with deep affection and confess, she will feel it, and the relationship will be halfway there.'Then I thought, 'But is Marlowe really like that in his eyes? Why does it feel like he's describing someone completely different from the Marlowe we see? Is this what happens when one falls in love?'
Marlowe asked, "Have you spent time with her? How's your relationship?"
"We get along well, very comfortably!"
Marlowe's eyes flickered, and she continued, "Mr. Collins, when do you plan to make it official? Will you tell everyone?"
"Whenever she wishes!" Christopher finally said something praiseworthy. He didn't seem clueless after all.
After answering, Christopher checked the time and stood up. He was ready to end the interview and leave.
Marlowe, perceptive as she was, signaled the photographer to stop filming and ended the interview.
Before leaving, Christopher reminded her, "Ms. Grey, it's best to follow the rules and not add any speculative content."
Marlowe forced a smile. "Don't worry, Mr. Collins. I wouldn't dare. If I added anything, the interview wouldn't get published."
Actually, today's interview, especially the last part about his feelings, was enough to make her magazine a hit. If she were smart, she'd be satisfied and not overdo it.
Christopher left the room. Now, it was just me, the photographer, Marlowe, and Quinlan in the room.
Without Christopher, Marlowe's demeanor changed instantly, losing her earlier grace and elegance. She pointed at Quinlan. "Did you get everything I asked you to record?"
I saw this and my hand tightened, but I held back and didn't step forward.
Quinlan nodded. "Yes, Ms. Grey, I got everything."
Marlowe glanced at the notes and exploded, pointing at the content. "Is this what you recorded? Are you stupid or doing this on purpose? Record everything Christopher said to me."
Quinlan lowered his head, barely breathing, and obediently replied, "I'm sorry, Ms. Grey. I'll delete it right away."
She was about to delete the content. But Marlowe, clearly venting her frustration from Christopher, lashed out at Quinlan.
Her scolding grew harsher, and she pointed at the notes. "I think you're doing this on purpose, acting all pitiful to attract sympathy."
But because the computer screen was touch-sensitive, she somehow selected all and deleted everything.
Marlowe was even more furious. "Are you deliberately causing trouble today? You got scolded, so you decided to mess with me? I asked you to delete a bit, and you deleted everything. Are you trying to sabotage this interview?"
Quinlan's voice trembled as she replied, "Ms. Grey, it wasn't me. You did it yourself."
"You dare talk back? Trying to shift the blame onto me? No remorse. How dare a lowly reporter talk to me like this? Who taught you to be so ill-mannered?"
Her words grew more excessive, questioning Quinlan's character. If this got out, nobody in the industry would hire Quinlan.
Clearly, Marlowe had asked for everything to be recorded, then blamed Quinlan for including the harsh parts.
She was the one causing trouble, yet she'd play the victim. And she deleted the content herself, but blamed Quinlan. Her sharp nails left a red mark on Quinlan's forehead.
Initially, I thought, since Marlowe was someone Christopher liked and Quinlan had to keep working under her, it was better to let it go. But seeing her bully Quinlan so openly in front of me, an outsider, she'd be even worse in private.
