Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 229

5 min 7.6K views

After dinner, Paula and I decided to go to the mall for some shopping.

From a distance, I spotted a familiar figure.

"What's up?" Paula asked, noticing me craning my neck towards a store.

"I must be seeing things. It can't be her," I said, shaking my head, thinking it was just my imagination.

Maybe it was because Lawrence had been on my mind lately that Missy popped into my head.

"Are you really giving this to me? The fabric is so nice. What if I mess it up?" Just as we were about to leave, I heard a voice.

This time, I knew I wasn't imagining things. It was Missy. I couldn't believe she was out of prison. Maybe Lawrence had taken all the blame, letting Missy go free.

Paula heard the voice too. "What's Missy doing here? And how does she have money to buy clothes? Let's go check it out!"

"Forget about her. She can't cause any trouble now. Let's not waste our time and ruin our mood," I said, trying to pull Paula away.

But Missy, who had been browsing clothes, spotted us. Despite being locked up for so long, her eyesight was still sharp.

She suddenly charged at us, screaming, "You bitch! It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, Lawrence wouldn't be dead. I'll kill you!"

Missy raised her hand to slap me.

Luckily, I reacted quickly, dodging her slap and then delivering one of my own. "Lawrence got what he deserved. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for raising such a monster. You're an accomplice. If it weren't for your poor health and being granted medical parole, do you think you'd have the chance to yell at me now?"

Paula, initially stunned by the sudden attack, quickly recovered. Though I had already retaliated, she was still furious.

"You bitch! If you dare bully my friend again, you'll be back in jail in no time. People like you should have died with Lawrence. How dare you play the victim!" Paula rolled up her sleeves, ready to fight, scaring Missy into backing off.

"Ms. Morgan, you shouldn't be running around like this. Your health can't take it," Beatrice said, who had run over to restrain Missy.

Beatrice had been manipulated by Lawrence. I had to admit he was quite capable. Even after his death, he had Beatrice protecting Missy.

Despite being on medical parole, Missy couldn't afford to live in Starlight City. Without Lawrence to support her, her daughters wanted nothing to do with her. Yet, she still insisted on staying in the city.

Beatrice, blocked by Paula, hadn't recognized me yet. She probably hadn't heard Missy's insults either.

She turned to Paula and lectured, "Ma'am, regardless of your issues with Ms. Morgan, she's in poor health and hasn't done anything to you. You shouldn't bully an elderly person. Please apologize to Ms. Morgan, or I will file a lawsuit on her behalf."

Paula laughed in disbelief. "You're a lawyer? I thought you were just nuts. Your job is to help people, not threaten them. By the way, I'm a lawyer too. Name's Paula."

Beatrice's expression changed upon hearing Paula's name, indicating she had heard of her.

However, she quickly regained her composure. "Nice to meet you, Ms. Ellis. I'm not threatening you. I just think your behavior towards Ms. Morgan is inappropriate."

Paula sneered, about to say something, but I stepped forward. "Are you blind or just stupid? Didn't you see Missy provoke us first? Given her medical parole, she should behave herself. Even if I did bully her, so what?"

"You bitch! You killed your husband and bully your mother-in-law. You'll face divine retribution!" Missy screamed, pointing at me.

The commotion attracted a crowd. People, with their short memories and constant exposure to new information, didn't recognize me.

From Missy's accusations and her ragged appearance, the crowd sided with her, criticizing me.

"Marry a virtuous wife, they say. Stay away from women like her."

"How can anyone not go crazy when an old woman is bullied like this? This woman is heartless."

Hearing the crowd's support for Missy, Beatrice turned to me. "Melinda, you see, everyone thinks you're being too harsh on Ms. Morgan. Even if she was wrong, she's been punished. Let the past go. Look at her now, struggling to survive, working at a nearby BBQ joint despite her illness. Are you that heartless?"

"I can't listen to this anymore. If you want to be a saint, go ahead. No one's stopping you. I hope you end up with a husband like Lawrence and a mother-in-law like Missy. Then we'll see if you can still say this," Paula fumed, defending me. "Don't blame my friend for being harsh. You don't know what this woman and her son did. Her son deceived my friend for her inheritance, killed her parents, harmed her unborn child, and tried to poison her. Would you forgive such people?"

"Fuck, that's evil."

"I thought she looked familiar. Isn't she the woman who almost got killed by her husband a few months ago? Poor thing. If it were me, I'd want to tear them apart. How can anyone expect her to forgive?"

"That old woman deserves it. She raised such a scumbag and has the nerve to blame this lady. She should be begging for forgiveness."

Though my face wasn't immediately recognizable, the story jogged people's memories. They quickly sided with me.

Some even cursed at Beatrice, forcing her to drag Missy away in a hasty retreat.
