Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 263

"Too busy, no time right now!" Paula's voice was tinged with regret.

With her striking looks, tall stature, and confident personality, not to mention her capabilities, she had no shortage of admirers. Finding a boyfriend should be a breeze for her.

But using busyness as an excuse didn't quite fit her character. Especially since her last breakup, it seemed like an unusually long time had passed. Normally, she'd have a new boyfriend within a month or two after a breakup.

Paula wasn't fickle in relationships. Once she realized it wasn't working out, she could detach quickly and easily, without getting too emotionally involved.

Could something be up this time?

I couldn't help but ask, "You don't have some unrequited love, do you?"

"How could that be? Do I seem like the type to have unrequited love?" Paula's voice was loud, almost defensive.

They said people raised their voices when they were feeling guilty.

I was about to comment on that when Paula changed the subject. "Alright, keep using the ointment. I'll get you a new one later. Don't forget. I have work to do, so let's catch up later. Bye!"

And with that, she hung up in a hurry.

It seemed like Paula might have something going on, but she wasn't ready to share. I wouldn't push her.

I hung up and remembered her reminder about the ointment. I took it to the mirror, lifted my bangs, and carefully applied it to my forehead. It still stung a bit.

I suddenly recalled Christopher applying ointment to my forehead. His face flashed in my mind, and I felt a wave of irritation. I didn't want to face him, but it seemed like he was everywhere in my life and work.

Maybe it was because he cared so much and took care of me that his presence was so pervasive. Given that he was unaware of what had happened, how could I blame him?

In the end, I decided to let it go. Pretend that night never happened. After all, only I knew about it. The past was the past.

So, it was right not to tell Paula. Otherwise, my peaceful life might have been disrupted. Knowing Paula, if she found out it was Christopher, she'd probably confront him, give him a piece of her mind, and demand he take responsibility.

That would make things awkward between Christopher and me.

As I pondered this, my phone rang. It was Marlowe.

I didn't have a good impression of her and didn't want to interact, so I ignored the call. But she called two more times, sounding urgent.

Finally, I answered.

"Melinda, I've been in a car accident. Please tell Christopher." She hung up right after.

I didn't expect her to be in an accident. Even though I didn't want to talk to Christopher, a car accident was serious. Marlowe's voice sounded weak, so it might be bad.

I bit the bullet and told Christopher.

Logically, if someone a person cared about was in an accident, they'd show some emotion. But Christopher's voice was calm. "Okay, I got it."

And that was it. No follow-up, no personal involvement in Marlowe's situation.

I couldn't help but think, his hidden affection was too well-hidden. Maybe he was worried about Faye watching him and Marlowe, so he pretended not to care.

Perhaps Christopher had already made arrangements behind the scenes.

As his secretary, I discreetly inquired about Marlowe's condition. I found out why she had the accident.

She had reluctantly gone on a business trip to Silverpeak City. On the way, she got irritated by a crying toddler in the next seat. She lost her temper.

"Stop crying! Can't you control your kid? It's giving me a headache. If you can't manage, why bring them out?"

The child's mother apologized, "I'm sorry, the child is young and doesn't understand. I'll try to calm her down. Please bear with us."

But Marlowe wouldn't let it go. Her harsh words and loud voice scared the child, who cried even more.

The child's grandmother couldn't take it anymore. "You're so young, yet so mean. Everyone was a child once. Can't you be more understanding? The child is crying because you're too harsh."

The grandmother's words only fueled Marlowe's anger. "What did you say? Your kid is the problem, not me. If you can't handle it, fly private!"

The grandmother, equally angry, retorted, "Look at you, dressed nicely but so rude. You're the one disturbing everyone."

Marlowe's anger flared. "What did you say? Try saying that again."

"What's your job, threatening people? Everyone, remember this face. Stay away from her."

"Shut up! Say that again, and I'll sue you for slander."

Marlowe tried to stop the grandmother, who thought Marlowe was going to hit her. The grandmother grabbed Marlowe's hand, and in the scuffle, Marlowe pushed her to the ground.

The elderly woman couldn't get up.
