Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 160

"I was just over there making a call." Christopher pointed to the flowerbed nearby.

The spot he indicated was close to where I had just been talking to Ophelia. So I asked, "Did you see everything that happened just now?"

I had been pretty intense with Ophelia, and I wasn't sure if he had seen that too.

For some reason, I felt a bit guilty. Maybe it was because I had come off as too aggressive, even a bit violent. I wondered if Christopher thought I was too fierce.

"Mr. Collins, I'm not usually that harsh. It's just that I've been dealing with a lot lately. Do you think it will affect the company?" I glanced at him nervously.

To my surprise, Christopher seemed to smile slightly. It wasn't my imagination.

"Not really harsh, more like a cat showing its claws. As for the company, this won't affect it." Christopher was joking, so he wasn't angry. But that comparison was unnecessary.

I nodded. "As long as it doesn't affect the company, that's good. I'm just a small assistant, after all. I shouldn't impact the company's image."

Christopher gave me a deep look, and suddenly, being stared at like that made me inexplicably nervous.

"You're a special assistant, and we're grooming you for higher positions!" Christopher emphasized this suddenly.

I looked up at him quickly. His gaze was deep and calm, not joking at all. My palms started to sweat from excitement and happiness. "Mr. Collins, don't worry. I'll work hard."

"Just do your best. Don't put too much pressure on yourself, though a little pressure can be motivating." Christopher sounded like a caring big brother. I was almost falling for him.

I nodded. He then said, "You don't need to worry about Alan. Jason will handle it."

"Got it!" I replied.

But then I remembered Ophelia's confident words before she left, and my heart skipped a beat.

Hesitating, I couldn't help but say, "Mr. Collins, I'm a bit worried. Ophelia seemed so sure she could get Alan out, like she already had a plan. Do you think she might do something extreme?"

Christopher's expression didn't change. He said calmly, "Don't worry. Jason can handle it."

Thinking about it, that made sense. Jason was smart and had dealt with many similar cases. He would know how to handle it. I was overthinking it.

But another question came to mind. "But, I remember Mr. Cook usually only deals with the parties involved. Ophelia isn't directly involved in the case. Will he handle it?"

"You seem to know a lot about him?" Christopher's deep gaze was on me as he said this.

Something about his tone felt off. Was he thinking I was spending too much time on these matters and not enough on the company?

I quickly explained, "Not really. But from what I've seen and what Paula told me about Mr. Cook, he seems like that kind of person."

Christopher joked, "You and Paula talk a lot, huh? How often does Jason come up in your conversations? Do you ever talk about me?"

"No, absolutely not!" I almost choked on my own words, feeling guilty and shaking my head vigorously.

But I couldn't meet his eyes. We talked about him a lot, actually.

I realized that many of my conversations with Paula involved Christopher. He was a big part of my life because we lived close to each other and saw each other often at work.

But I couldn't let Christopher know that. If he found out, he might think I had feelings for him, and that would make working with him awkward.

Christopher responded, "So, I don't make it into your conversations?"

Hearing that, my guilt vanished. I looked at Christopher, feeling like he sounded a bit jealous. "Mr. Collins, do you know your home's door code?"

"0320. Did you forget again?" Christopher frowned but answered truthfully. There, he was back to normal.

I was overthinking it. "Now that you mention it, I remember."

Christopher continued, "Jason focuses on the case itself, but Ophelia is Alan's wife. Their close relationship means she might know about or have helped with his misconduct. So, it's part of the case."

I nodded, feeling reassured.

I looked out the window, watching as the driver passed through a traffic light. I thought for a moment and then said, "Sir, at the next intersection, turn left. I want to stop by Elysian Eats to order some food."

If Ophelia hadn't interrupted me earlier, I would have ordered it by now, and it might already be at Christopher's villa.

"Are you hungry at this hour?" Christopher raised an eyebrow, looking at me.

"No, it's for you. I tried it with Paula last time, and it was really good," I replied honestly.

As soon as I finished speaking, I noticed Christopher's expression softened. "Specially for me?"

"Yes!" I nodded.

I could see Christopher's eyebrows relax, and his eyes seemed to smile. So, Christopher liked being cared for too.

Since we were on the topic, I added, "And thank you for providing breakfast for me all this time. My hand is better now, so I don't need it anymore. Consider this meal my thank you."

Christopher's smile disappeared instantly. He seemed to radiate coldness, and his tone was clearly displeased. "Is my breakfast not good, or am I so ugly that you can't eat?"

"What? No, of course not! Mr. Collins, you're so handsome. How could I not eat because of you?" I hurried to explain.

But the more I explained, the worse it seemed. Luckily, he didn't get more upset.

I looked at him and explained seriously, "Have you noticed I've gained weight recently? I've only been eating your food for a short time, and my old pants are getting tight. I've gained at least three to five pounds."

I didn't dare weigh myself, fearing I'd be devastated.
