Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 151
I was still fuming in the car. I even went so far as to block Una on all platforms. What happened at the nursing home with Ophelia today was quite a scene, involving many elderly residents. The fact that some of them got upset would definitely spread around.
I couldn't believe Una didn't know about it. She knew Ophelia and I didn't get along, yet she still asked me to seek help from her. It was clear she wanted me to bow down to Ophelia, showing she never really considered me a friend. How could I not be angry?
Blocking Una made me feel a bit better.
The next day, I planned to drop off some toys for Paula to give to Lucky, but I had some work engagements. Christopher and I had to go out in the afternoon, so I didn't have time.
Unexpectedly, Una was persistent. She called again. Since I had blocked her, she used a different number. I didn't recognize it, so I answered.
Christopher was still beside me, working on some documents. I lowered my voice, "Hello, who is this?"
"Melinda, it's me. I can't believe you blocked me. We're still friends, aren't we?" Una's voice sounded choked up.
Friends? I didn't think so.
Recognizing her voice, I was about to hang up when Una, sensing my intention, pleaded, "Melinda, please, for old times' sake, help me out one more time. I've worked so hard to move on, but finding a job is still so tough..."
I sneered, "None of this is my fault!" So, there was no need to threaten me.
Una panicked. "That's not what I meant. It's just that it's easier for you. It's just a word from you."
"A word? To Ophelia? I don't believe you haven't heard about what happened at the nursing home. You still made things difficult for me and think you're a good friend."
If it were Paula, she wouldn't have even mentioned it. If she knew I was upset, she would have stood by me, even if it meant losing her job, and given Ophelia a piece of her mind.
Una paused for a moment, then said, "It's not that I have to stay at Quantum Dynamics Corporation. How about Horizon Ventures Inc? If you could get me in there, that would work too. Can't you do that?"
"No! Horizon Ventures Inc isn't what it used to be. It's not a supermarket where you can come and go as you please. You've been in the workforce for years; I don't believe you don't understand this," I replied coldly.
Una's voice wavered, "How can it be impossible? You introduced me before. Melinda, if you don't want to help, just say so. Why make excuses? I'm an orphan, grew up in an orphanage, and have had a tough life. Why humiliate me? Not everyone is as lucky as you. Aren't you supposed to be kind? Can't you show some sympathy?"
She played the pity card while standing on a moral high ground to accuse me. How ridiculous.
Lucky? A person who lost love, had no children, no parents, no home, and had been betrayed and manipulated—this was called lucky? Who would want such luck?
And she said I didn't sympathize with her. Didn't she feel any guilt saying that?
"I think I was too kind back then, feeling sorry for you and introducing you to a job. But you? Didn't you choose not to stay at Horizon Ventures Inc? Now you're blaming me, ungrateful much?" I didn't hold back and retorted.
Una probably sensed my anger and quickly changed her tone, "That's not what I meant. I'm just asking you to say a word to Horizon Ventures Inc. It's just a word!"
"I can't!" I refused outright. "I recently applied to Horizon Ventures Inc myself and didn't get in. If I can't get in, how can I help you? You need to work hard on your own and stop relying on me."
"And don't mention Horizon Ventures Inc again. I had Paula introduce you before when it was small. You know how it is now. Don't call me again. Our friendship ends here." I hung up without caring about Una's feelings.
Then I noticed a deep gaze on me.
I had tried to keep my voice down, but my emotions got the better of me, and I probably spoke louder, disturbing Christopher. I smiled awkwardly and apologized, "Sorry, I got a bit loud and disturbed your work."
"No disturbance. Just some simple documents, all done," Christopher replied calmly, with a hint of amusement in his eyes. "It was quite a show! Rarely see you talk like that. Quite interesting."
He must have heard most of my conversation. I felt a bit embarrassed, realizing he saw that side of me.
But I didn't regret it. Dealing with Una was necessary, so I replied without guilt, "Some people don't know their place. I won't give them respect."
I was not usually hot-tempered, but Una really pushed my buttons.
Christopher raised an eyebrow, and I felt he leaned in a bit. "What about me? Which category do I fall into? The one you give respect to?"
My heart skipped a beat. Especially when I met his deep gaze, my heart missed a beat.
The space in the car seemed to shrink, and the air felt insufficient. I quickly moved aside, laughing awkwardly. "Mr. Collins, you're joking. I wouldn't dare disrespect you. You're my boss. Disrespecting you would be asking for trouble."
My words made Christopher chuckle, his laugh deep and magnetic, "Now that sounds nice. But there were times you were quite infuriating."
I blushed. "Mr. Collins, that's all in the past. You're too magnanimous to hold grudges, right? I've changed now, haven't I?"
I had indeed changed! So, I wasn't feeling guilty about my words.
Christopher looked at me deeply but didn't say much.
I seized the chance to change the topic, "How's Biscuit after the IV?"
"Feeling better. If you care, we can take it for a walk later." Christopher suggested.
I planned to take Sunny for a walk after work anyway. Adding Biscuit wouldn't be a problem.
"Sure, but I wonder if Biscuit is still afraid of me." I recalled how sick Biscuit looked, nothing like the lively dog that first met Sunny.
Christopher looked at me. "Familiarity brings comfort."
