Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 137
I never expected Christopher to know about what happened downstairs.
Today, there was only one incident involving me, so I was sure that when Christopher mentioned the employee protected by security, he was talking about me.
"Got it, Mr. Collins!" Vincent quickly left the office after receiving his instructions.
I snapped back to reality and placed the coffee on Christopher's left side, hesitating whether to explain the morning's events.
Christopher took a sip of the coffee before speaking, "Even if Summit Innovations Group collaborates with Quantum Dynamics Corporation, we still have a say in the matter..."
"What?"
His sudden statement confused me.
I thought Christopher was thanking the security guard, which meant he was supporting me. But his words sounded more like a reprimand.
I felt a bit upset and slightly wronged. When I looked at him, my eyes were misty.
Christopher frowned, which made my heart tighten even more.
"Summit Innovations Group believes in harmony and prosperity, but we don't start trouble, nor do we fear it!" Christopher's words still left me puzzled.
I could only assume the worst and try to guess, "Mr. Collins, do you think what I did downstairs today was wrong?"
I felt even more wronged.
Clearly, I wasn't at fault. I was the victim. Even if I didn't expect Christopher to acknowledge my grievances, he shouldn't be defending the bad guy.
Christopher's eyes widened at my words, and he looked at me.
I was bewildered! Was I wrong? But thinking he might be defending the bad guy, I stubbornly stared back at him.
Then, I seemed to hear a very light sigh, so faint that I thought I imagined it.
"Melinda, Mr. Turner is such a smart person. Did you not eat properly as a child, causing your brain not to develop fully? Don't you understand what I mean? Since I had someone thank the security guard, isn't that enough to show my stance? With a brain like yours, I'm really worried you'll be easily deceived when you go out."
So, he meant I did the right thing. If that was the case, why did he frown?
But his words instantly lifted my gloomy mood. Anyway, he always spoke harshly, so I just pretended to be immune and didn't argue with him.
Instead, I took his compliment to heart. "Mr. Collins, you're so impressive and powerful. Having a boss like you is a blessing for Summit Innovations Group and for me," I said flatteringly.
Christopher was speechless at my response and said disdainfully, "Enough. Instead of using your brain to flatter, why not add some to your intelligence so you don't affect me."
I replied, "Mr. Collins, you really don't need to say that about me. Saying that about me is like saying it about yourself!"
I smiled as I responded. But it was clearly a retort.
Christopher raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"
"You personally praised me, Mr. Collins. You acknowledged my abilities, and now you're complaining about me. If others knew, wouldn't they think your judgment is off? So, you really don't need to say that about me."
Christopher laughed in exasperation. "Sharp-tongued! Now your brain is working fast."
I was in a great mood and couldn't help but boast, "Mr. Collins, you underestimate me. My brain works fast not just here. I've already organized Ophelia's information and sent it to your email. Please check it out."
Christopher glanced at me. "What made you think to investigate her?"
I caught a fleeting look of approval in his eyes, and it made me feel elated.
"Ophelia is Alan's wife. Alan must know that Horizon Innovations' research won't pass, but he still wants to try. It might have something to do with Ophelia. Especially since she married Alan, many positions in the company have been filled with her relatives, giving her more influence. So, I thought to investigate from this angle," I explained confidently.
When it came to work, I no longer felt hesitant or troubled. Instead, I felt more confident.
Christopher didn't hold back his praise, "Looks like my previous reminders have paid off. You've made great progress. Keep it up! And you've developed a keen eye!"
He raised his coffee cup slightly, acknowledging that I had replaced his cold coffee just in time.
I beamed at his compliment, "Thank you for the praise, Mr. Collins."
Christopher responded with a faint acknowledgment, but I could tell from his slightly upturned lips that he was in a good mood.
It turned out that complimenting others could also bring satisfaction and a good mood.
With nothing else to do, I left the office.
As I reached my desk, I heard the phone ringing at the reception.
"Ms. Turner, there's a woman claiming to be the wife of the president of Quantum Dynamics Corporation who wants to meet you. She's waiting at the dessert shop on the third floor next to the office building. She is waiting for your response."
I didn't expect Ophelia to be so impatient after I dealt with that middle-aged man, coming to find me so quickly.
I figured if I didn't agree to meet her, she would find another reason to see me. I was also curious about why she wanted to meet me, so I decided to go.
"Okay, please let her know I'll be there shortly."
"Sure!"
After hanging up, I informed Vincent and headed downstairs.
Desserts were usually enjoyed in the afternoon, so the dessert shop was quiet and empty at this time.
Clearly, she had done her research on me, as I saw a pure-looking woman with clear skin and a youthful appearance due to her baby face, waving at me as soon as I entered. It was Ophelia.
I thought a woman who climbed up by being a third party would be more glamorous, but she turned out to be different.
"Ms. Turner, what would you like to eat? Feel free to order anything!" Her voice was gentle and soft, without any aggression, making it easy to like her.
I wasn't here for the desserts. Paula, a foodie, had already brought me here shortly after it opened, so I wasn't very interested.
I casually ordered a dessert and then looked at her, speaking nonchalantly, "Mrs. Bennett, I've already declined your request. If this is about the investment, meeting me won't help. I'm just a secretary and can't influence Mr. Collins' decisions. You'd be better off meeting him directly."
Ophelia didn't speak immediately, seemingly sizing me up.
I let her look, especially when her gaze fell on the scar on my face. She couldn't help but speak up, "Ms. Turner, a woman's face is the most important. You don't want Mr. Collins to get tired of you quickly, do you? I know a great plastic surgeon who can remove the scar on your face."
I had checked in the mirror this morning. Although there was a scar, it wasn't noticeable unless one looked closely. I had applied some foundation, so it wasn't obvious.
I didn't know if she was deliberately mocking me, but her words did make me feel inferior to her smooth skin.
