"Middle school? Maybe he saw my photo at some elder's place!"

I looked at Paula, "I don't know if I told you? Our elders are old acquaintances. During college, he stayed at my house for over a year."

Paula shook her head, "I mean before Christopher stayed at your house. Think carefully, could you have met him but forgotten?"

"Probably not. Back in middle school, we were together every day! It's not that important. So, what's up?" I denied.

Paula frowned, looking a bit puzzled, "Do you remember that winter in college when you fell into the lake and almost died? It was Christopher who saved you. Lawrence tried to take you from his arms, not caring that you were already hypothermic. Later, when you were just sent to the ER, Christopher beat up Lawrence in the hallway.

Then they both started fighting. Lawrence shouted that Christopher shouldn't think about taking anything or anyone from him. Christopher punched Lawrence even harder, saying he knew you first, and if he wanted to take you, Lawrence wouldn't even have the chance to appear.

Christopher was really something. He saved you from the water, his face was pale from the cold, and Lawrence still wasn't his match.

It was the doctor who noticed Christopher's condition and pulled him away for treatment."

I widened my eyes in disbelief, looking at Paula, "I can't believe it. I didn't know it was Christopher who saved me. It was so cold then, I fainted shortly after falling into the water and vaguely felt someone saving me."

It's hard to imagine that someone as cool and noble as Christopher would get into a fight, and be so fierce.

But maybe not. I have seen him fight before, but because I was afraid of him and Lawrence intentionally kept me away from him, I never thought much about it.

"I caught a cold and it developed into pneumonia after falling into the water. Lawrence stayed by my side day and night, losing weight. That's when I gradually confirmed my feelings and later agreed to be with him.

When I woke up, I asked Lawrence who saved me. He said it was a junior, and he had thanked him on my behalf. I wasn't in good health then, and Lawrence told me not to think about it. He would handle it. I mentioned it once after I was discharged, but he interrupted me, and I seemed to forget about it."

Paula shook her head, "Lawrence is such a bad man, taking advantage of the situation and erasing Christopher's credit. If you hadn't mentioned recently how much Christopher has helped you, I wouldn't have brought it up, and you wouldn't know how long you'd be kept in the dark. Does this mean you owe Christopher another life-saving debt?"

I nodded, indeed, "I'll find an opportunity to thank him in person. No wonder he said I was ungrateful. He saved me so many times, and I thought he was being harsh. But even though his words were harsh, they were for my good. If he hadn't woken me up, I'd still be muddling through."

Paula suddenly chuckled.

"Why are you laughing?" I asked, puzzled.

If she weren't driving, I would have leaned closer to take a good look at her.

Paula said, "Melinda, a life-saving grace should be repaid. Christopher has saved you several times. Being with him wouldn't be too much of a repayment!"

"Don't joke like that. Someone like Christopher deserves a smart, wise, and generous beauty. I'm not that. And although their fight seemed to be over me, I know my limits. I was probably just a trigger. They might have had conflicts before, which is why they were tense when they met."

I didn't dare think too much and immediately denied it.

I used to have a crush on Lawrence, and he pursued me intensely. We liked each other, and I thought I had some charm. But now that the lies are exposed, I realize I misjudged myself. I don't dare to have wild thoughts anymore.

Paula sighed, "Melinda, in my eyes, you're the best. And I believe in many people's eyes, you're gentle and radiant. Don't deny yourself because of Lawrence's badness."

Then she said with some regret, "I think if you had a crush on Christopher, or if he had saved you and taken care of you in the hospital, Lawrence might not have had a chance."

I thought about Paula's words.

Then I shook my head, "Paula, with Lawrence's means, once he set his sights on me, even if he didn't succeed that time, he wouldn't miss any chance to entangle me later. As for Christopher taking care of me..."

Just thinking about his overly cold and indifferent face and occasionally sharp mouth, I shook my head, forget it.

I remembered Christopher's sudden look of sadness last time and reminded Paula.

"Really? It's a pity I wasn't there. Could someone have plotted against you?" Paula frowned, worried.

I shook my head, "It's been so long, and there's no surveillance. I didn't see anyone behind me. Forget it, let's not talk about it. It's all in the past. Didn't you say you wanted to help me relax? Where are we going?"

Paula snapped her fingers, "Of course, we're going shopping first, buying new clothes, and forgetting the bad things. Women feel better when they shop. I'll make you radiant. Then we'll have a meal."

"Okay, I'll listen to you!" I hadn't gone shopping or bought anything for a long time.

Since I got pregnant, or maybe even earlier, I wasn't very materialistic. So I only bought things when necessary or when I found something suitable.

When I was with Lawrence, considering his family's situation, I rarely went shopping with him to respect his pride.

I was foolish. I cared about him, but he had already thrown away his dignity and was so shameless.
