Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 246
I went back to my desk and, as I figured, grabbed the latest issue of Echo Magazine to flip through it. Sure enough, there it was—a news article about me.
Marlowe had crossed the line. She seemed to be reporting on Beatrice and Missy, but the real aim was to dig up my past and reopen old wounds.
It felt like she was rubbing salt in them, pretending to stand up for me while exposing my vulnerabilities.
Just as I was about to call Marlowe to confront her, my phone rang. It was her.
"Ms. Turner, have you seen the latest issue of our magazine?" Marlowe's tone was light and cheerful.
I could sense her smugness. I gritted my teeth and replied, "Oh, I've seen it. If I hadn't, I wouldn't know that you had run out of news and had to resort to writing about me. One might think you have a crush on me, given how you keep dragging me into unrelated matters."
Marlowe pretended not to notice my anger. "Ms. Turner, you wouldn't believe how many people sympathize with you after reading the article. Despite your past, it's not your fault, and people won't mock you."
"Ms. Grey, it seems Echo Magazine isn't doing well if you have to dig up my past for attention. Do you think I need people to pity me?" I shot back sarcastically.
Marlowe feigned surprise. "Don't you? I thought you did, considering how even someone as aloof as Christopher takes care of you because of your pitiful situation."
Clearly, Marlowe was jealous.
Christopher was kind to me not just because we were colleagues but also because of my parents. Marlowe knew nothing and was lashing out of jealousy.
But she wasn't even Christopher's girlfriend. What right did she have?
She wasn't kind, and someone like her didn't deserve Christopher.
"Ms. Grey, aren't you the pitiful one? Maybe I should write an article about you for your magazine, something that would really tug at people's heartstrings."
If she wanted to bring up past experiences, I could do the same.
Being around Christopher, I had learned a lot, including negotiation tactics. Instead of falling into traps, I knew when to turn the tables and go on the offensive.
"Sharp-tongued, Ms. Turner. But our situations are different. I don't have an ex-husband like yours!"
Our call ended on a sour note.
But the public opinion was brewing, and if it continued, I would be under scrutiny for a long time.
As I pondered my next move, even considering asking my friend Paula's PR firm for help, Marlowe's magazine ran into trouble.
First, it was exposed that Marlowe's magazine had published false news.
News must be truthful, fair, and just. A scandal like this was fatal for a magazine and its editor.
But that wasn't all.
Before Marlowe could clear up the false news, another accusation surfaced. Someone claimed Marlowe had paid them to stage fake photos to make the news more sensational.
And it didn't stop there. A video surfaced showing Marlowe being cold and heartless.
In the video, someone said they were sick and wanted to take leave, but Marlowe refused and even threatened to dock their pay. The person ended up with a severe illness and was still in the hospital.
The scandal nearly drove Marlowe to destroy her office in rage.
During our call, I had sarcastically suggested that if her past came to light and caused trouble, I could recommend a good PR team. She had mocked me and Paula.
Now, she was in a real scandal and desperately needed a good PR team. Naturally, she suspected I was behind it.
As I drove home, she blocked my way.
"Melinda, was it you? How could you be so vicious? I thought you were kind, but you're disgusting!" Marlowe screamed, pointing at me.
Seeing her in such a state, remembering my frustration from a few days ago, I couldn't help but feel a bit of satisfaction.
I silently apologized to Christopher. Even though he liked her, I couldn't help but feel happy seeing her like this.
I asked, "Ms. Grey, you're the one being harsh. What did I do to deserve this? Do you think I have no temper?"
"Keep pretending. Christopher doesn't know your true nature, which is why he keeps you as his secretary. If it wasn't you who leaked the information about my magazine, how could I be in this mess?" Marlowe's eyes were red, and she looked ready to attack me.
I smiled calmly. "You're funny. You dragged me into this without my consent, causing a media storm. I didn't react like you are now. Without evidence, you blame me. Out of kindness, I could recommend a PR team. I'll even give you a discount."
"Melinda, how dare you mock me! You deserved to be dumped and schemed against by Lawrence. Christopher only pities you. Don't get too full of yourself."
Marlowe's harsh words were meant to break me.
But she didn't know that someone who had crawled out of hell couldn't be easily broken.
"Your shouting only shows your incompetence. It doesn't affect me. I won't waste my time here."
I closed the car window and drove away.
Even if I had done it, Marlowe had no right to accuse me.
If she hadn't done those things, it wouldn't have affected her. She should have expected retaliation.
I decided not to waste my time on her.
After returning home, I went to Christopher's house to pick up Sunny.
After a few days apart, Sunny surprisingly didn't cling to Biscuit and was willing to come with me.
As I was about to leave with Sunny, Christopher appeared at the door with Biscuit. He seemed about to speak when his phone rang.
He answered quickly, and his expression changed after a few words.
Before I could start my car, Christopher opened the door and got in. "Drive to the hospital. We need to get a doctor to Hayes' house. Something's happened!"
