Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 106
I thought the interview, especially with three directors, would be super tense and serious. But I was wrong.
When the three interviewers saw me, they were really kind, even smiling, which eased a lot of the tension that should have been there.
The questions they asked weren't tricky either; they were all within my expertise and not difficult for me.
I even answered smoothly without any stuttering, and the whole process went very well.
As the HR lady had said, my professional background matched, my translation skills were still sharp, and I had experience in investment. So, almost every topic they asked about, I answered truthfully and confidently.
The interview ended quickly.
"Ms. Turner, please wait for the notification of the interview results," HR said this to me and then escorted me out.
Even after I left the building, I was still a bit dazed. Was it really over?
Then, I couldn't help but laugh. Maybe it was because I hadn't interacted much with the outside world for almost two years, so I was afraid of socializing, as if I had built an invisible cage around myself.
When I opened the cage, I realized it wasn't even locked.
Next came the waiting.
For a company as large as Summit Innovations Group, everything was well-organized and followed a process. I received the result on the third day.
And it wasn't a notification for a third-round interview; they directly sent me an offer, saying I had passed the interview and could officially start working at the company.
I was surprised, so I asked, "Wasn't there supposed to be a third-round interview with Mr. Collins?"
I hadn't seen Christopher these past few days. Tiana had come by my house to drop off some things and mentioned that Christopher seemed to be away.
Sure enough, HR replied, "Mr. Collins watched your interview video and felt your abilities didn't require a third-round interview. He's currently on a business trip, so he asked HR to send you the offer directly."
"Okay, thank you."
I hung up the phone, trying to stay calm, but my heart was racing.
My fingers were trembling slightly, and a smile crept onto my face.
I stood by the window, raised my hand slightly to block my face, and the sunlight filtered through my fingers, shining on my face. "Hello, new beginning!"
I grinned. Then I couldn't wait to call Paula to share the joy. "Paula, I passed the Summit Innovations Group interview!"
"Really? Melinda, I knew you could do it. That's awesome. We have to celebrate. Is there anything you want to eat? My treat!" Paula said enthusiastically.
I didn't hold back, "How about barbecue?"
I had been craving barbecue these past two days, probably because I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watching food videos that made me hungry. But going alone felt like it lacked the right atmosphere.
Paula, who had tried all the best food in Starlight City, knew exactly where to go for the best taste. "No problem, I know a great barbecue place. I'll pick you up in a bit."
"OK!" I replied with a smile.
After hanging up, I quickly tidied up.
Paula drove over, and since there was no traffic, she arrived quickly. She took me to a barbecue restaurant on the tenth floor.
Paula chose this place because she planned to take me shopping on the twelfth floor after the meal to buy some new clothes. When girls were in a good mood, they shopped, and when they were in a bad mood, they shopped even more.
Today, we were in a good mood.
Paula told me to go upstairs and mention her name, and the manager immediately arranged a table for us with great enthusiasm, which made me feel even better.
But then, someone had to ruin it. A mocking laugh was directed straight at me.
I could feel the malice and looked up to see Clara and Brianna not far away.
Brianna was a strange one. She was not bad, and from the way she tried to talk sense into Clara, she seemed to have decent values.
But somehow, this person with decent values was friends with someone like Clara and followed her around like a little sidekick.
"Got a problem with your teeth?" I retorted, annoyed.
Thinking about Clara's arrogant and hateful attitude towards me last time made me feel disgusted.
If anyone should be angry, it should be me. After all, her mom was the mistress who ruined my mom's family, yet she acted like the victim. And she seemed to be everywhere I went. What a small world.
My good mood was ruined, so I didn't hold back.
"Melinda, why so tense? Did you believe what I said? I knew you would. You were just being stubborn that day. We keep running into each other, it's fate," Clara taunted.
I made a gagging motion, looking at Clara like she was trash. "Don't flatter yourself. I don't want that kind of fate."
Clara sneered at me. "Whether you want it or not, you have it! We're destined to be entangled, and you can't escape."
When she said "can't escape," her eyes were cold and venomous.
I felt a chill, like I was being wrapped by a snake.
But I didn't show it. If I got angry now, it would be exactly what she wanted. She probably couldn't wait to see me lose my cool.
The more Clara wanted to provoke me, the less I would let her succeed.
"What do I have to escape from? Clara, isn't it you who should be ashamed? If I were the child of a mistress, I'd hide and keep a low profile. But you, instead of feeling ashamed, come to provoke me, the legitimate daughter. You really are shameless." I could be sarcastic too.
Maybe I had regained my confidence, or maybe without Lawrence, I had awakened. So when I insulted her, I went straight for the jugular.
"Melinda, it's your father who's despicable. What are you proud of? Don't act high and mighty in front of me. When you found out your seemingly perfect father was a hypocrite, were you devastated? Your parents' love is just a joke." Clara tried to provoke me.
Yes, my father cheated, but his love for me was pure. I wouldn't let anyone insult him, even after his death.
So my expression turned cold. "Clara, did Lawrence tell you I'm an easy-to-deceive, weak pushover? If you really believe that, then you're the real fool. When I lose my temper, it's pretty scary."
Clara scoffed, unimpressed.
Then I coldly threatened, "Is it hereditary for mistresses? You feel no shame and spout nonsense. For a family as strict as the Simpsons, what do you think they'd do if they knew you were a mistress?"
