Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 123
Not long ago, Clara had called me several times.
I knew Clara was getting impatient because I hadn't reacted to the packages she sent. I deliberately ignored her, even setting my phone to silent.
That was why when Brianna said Clara was in trouble, my first reaction was disbelief. If she could still call me, then her disappearance must be fake.
I answered the phone this time, "If you're calling to brag about those creepy dolls you sent me, save it. Do you really think I'm still that gullible, weak woman?"
"Melinda, you answered my call because you want to hear what I have to say. Stop pretending to be tough," Clara mocked from the other end.
"If you have nothing useful to say, I'm hanging up. As for those packages, my child is gone, my parents were murdered, and I've been through the worst. Lawrence is in prison, and I've avenged what I needed to. Do you really think there's anything left that can break me?" My tone was calm and composed, as if discussing the weather.
Even if I felt turmoil inside, I wouldn't show it in front of her.
Just as I was about to hang up, Clara stopped me, "Why the rush? I know you've been trying to find out who was at the hotel that night. What if I told you I know?"
Knowing Clara, she wouldn't call unless she had something substantial. Sure enough, it was something useful.
But I also knew she might not be telling the truth. So I didn't show much enthusiasm, responding as if I expected it, "So it was related to you!"
Maybe my parents protected me too well, or maybe I was just lucky before. Encountering people like Lawrence and Clara, I found it hard to handle such malice.
Clara laughed maniacally, "That's because you're stupid! You were so dumb that Lawrence could fool you for so long without you noticing. I thought breaking you all at once would be too easy. After all, I've suffered for over twenty years. So why don't we meet, and I'll tell you who that person is?"
She wanted to meet me, but I didn't know her true intentions. Or maybe she was just a sadist who wanted to see me suffer.
I wasn't falling for it. "Knowing who that person is would be nice, but I'm not obsessed with it. Besides, you could tell me over the phone, but you want to meet. How do I know you're not lying?"
On the other end, I heard her breathing hitch, clearly not expecting my response.
Then Clara gritted her teeth and threatened, "Didn't think you had the guts. But Melinda, whether you come or not isn't up to you. If you don't show up, I won't hesitate to scatter your mother's ashes and take your father's to my mother's grave for a joint burial!"
"Clara, you're despicable. No matter how vile you are, you shouldn't use the dead to threaten me." I was so angry my face turned red, and I couldn't help but shout.
Even passersby gave me curious looks. I took several deep breaths to calm myself.
Clara scoffed, "Kyle didn't let my mother and me have a good life, so why should his daughter? Give me a straight answer. Are you coming or not? If not, I'll deal with the ashes right away."
I was furious, but the thought of my parents not resting in peace pained me.
I replied coldly, "Where and when?"
"Regal Heights Estate. Come now." Clara said this and quickly hung up.
I tightened my grip on my phone, feeling helpless but having no choice but to head to Regal Heights Estate.
Before that, I had to contact Paula.
I didn't tell her the truth, just said something came up. If she knew, she wouldn't let me go.
Paula didn't suspect anything, just playfully complained, "You're ditching me? Be honest, is it because of Mr. Collins? So you're the one who values romance over friendship."
I played along, "What, you're not happy I'm with Mr. Collins? I thought you were always trying to set us up."
To distract her from questioning my reason for canceling, I said something I didn't mean. After all, a man like Christopher was out of my league.
Paula got excited. "Melinda, that's the spirit! You finally came around. But you owe me for canceling this time."
"Don't worry, I'll make it up to you. I'll treat you to more than one meal," I coaxed Paula.
She happily hung up.
The cab arrived quickly, and I put my phone in my pocket, closing my eyes to rest.
I wondered what Clara wanted from this meeting.
Vance had already found out Clara's apartment was on the fifteenth floor, and the address matched. I remembered it clearly.
The cab stopped at the estate entrance, and after registering my name and address, the security let me in.
I checked the map near the entrance and headed straight to Clara's building.
For some reason, I felt uneasy as I walked. I had a vague sense of danger.
Suddenly, I stopped and looked back.
Nothing. I felt like someone was following me.
But seeing no one, I laughed at myself, thinking I was paranoid because I couldn't guess Clara's intentions.
I continued walking, trying to calm myself, but my anxiety grew.
Sometimes, a woman's intuition was worth trusting. I stood at the building entrance, hesitating to enter the code.
I suddenly remembered something.
Clara said she was waiting at home, but Brianna mentioned Clara's car was still in the underground garage.
A normal person wouldn't leave their car and take a cab home to meet me.
My hand hovered over the door handle, frowning at the entrance.
The next moment, my eyes widened.
