Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 210
I said, "Yeah, I won't say a word, but Mrs. Collins wants me to set up a blind date for Christopher. I can't do that."
Paula replied, "Faye must be getting desperate. Christopher's not getting any younger, and it's about time he settled down. He doesn't listen to his family, so Faye's trying a different approach. Maybe she saw your photos together and wants to scare you off."
"Scare me off? I never had any intentions! Besides, Faye's barking up the wrong tree. Christopher already has someone he likes. If Faye wants to set him up, she should focus on that person."
"But do you think Faye would approve if she knew who Christopher liked?" I felt a pang of sympathy for Christopher.
"Probably not. The Collins family is all about social status and matching backgrounds." In their circle, most families were like that.
"Poor Christopher," I couldn't help but say.
"Don't feel too bad. With Christopher's abilities and family background, he's destined for an arranged marriage. Someone like Marlowe, with her status, would find it hard to be an exception."
Paula analyzed the situation for me.
This meant that Marlowe might be out of the picture even before she and Christopher could be together.
Paula asked me what I planned to do next. Was I really going to follow Faye's orders?
"I think I'll pass. I'm Christopher's secretary, so I should prioritize him. I'll let him decide what to do. As for Faye, I'll just avoid her if she wants to meet again." I shared my decision.
To my surprise, Paula praised me, "Even though it goes against Mrs. Collins' wishes, I think you made the right choice."
"Really? You're not just saying that to make me feel better?"
Paula chuckled, "You've learned a lot from Mr. Collins. You'll have plenty of opportunities to be praised in the future. It's important to know your place. As Mr. Collins' secretary, you should prioritize him. If anything happens, he can handle it, so don't worry."
"Thanks, Paula. I know what to do now." I smiled and thanked her for her advice.
After hanging up, I took the file folder to Christopher's office.
He was busy with paperwork but looked up when he noticed me standing there. "What's up?"
I handed him the folder. "You need to take a look at this."
Christopher didn't notice anything unusual at first. He opened the folder and started flipping through the photos of the women, scrutinizing them like a boss evaluating employees.
But he quickly sensed something was off. "Why are they all women?" he frowned.
He seemed to think I had found replacements for Douglas from Stanley's team, someone to oversee the AutoForge Workshop. But the photos didn't match what he was looking for.
I explained, "These are the blind date candidates Mrs. Collins arranged for you."
Christopher looked at me with an unreadable expression. "They got to you this quickly," he said.
I nodded, "Mrs. Collins met me at Serenity Tea House at noon. She wanted me to surprise you with these blind date candidates."
Christopher's eyes darkened. "And what did you tell her?"
"I refused, but it didn't go as planned. That's why these photos are on your desk." I felt a bit helpless.
"Tell me everything." He wanted to know the details.
I didn't hold back, explaining how I took Paula's call and tried to get away, but they caught up and handed me the photos.
"Mr. Collins, I'm sorry. This is the best I could do."
It was clear Christopher wasn't keen on blind dates, and I hadn't managed to refuse them, which meant more trouble for him.
Fortunately, Christopher didn't seem too bothered.
He even had a cold glint in his eyes. "This is typical of her."
Christopher's words implied it wasn't my fault.
I relayed another message from Faye, "She said if you don't want to go on blind dates, you should bring home the person you like."
Christopher sneered, "That's not their true intention."
He added coldly, "They're just a bunch of liars."
I didn't quite understand what he meant.
But it was clear he didn't have a good relationship with his family. There seemed to be some agreement they were breaking by involving me.
"From now on, don't refuse them. Just do as they say," Christopher added.
I widened my eyes, "Will there be consequences?"
"Are you scared now?" Christopher raised an eyebrow, looking at me deeply.
I nodded, then shook my head, explaining, "The Collins family is powerful. Being targeted by them could be troublesome. So, yes, I'm a bit scared. But Mr. Collins, you promised to protect your people. I'm an employee of Summit Innovations Group, your secretary, so I'm your person. You said you'd protect me, right? So, what do I have to fear?"
My words seemed to please Christopher. I thought I saw a slight smile and a hint of amusement in his eyes.
"Remember that. You're my person," Christopher repeated, his voice low and husky, almost magnetic.
Was this the sense of security from being protected? It felt so charming.
"I'll remember," I nodded. "So, about the blind dates?"
"You handle it," Christopher replied.
"What? You're agreeing to the blind dates?" I was surprised. After everything he said, I thought he wouldn't agree. His sudden agreement caught me off guard.
"Do you not want me to go?" Christopher's deep eyes seemed to reflect my entire being, yet they were unfathomable and almost predatory.
"Not exactly. I just thought you didn't want to go on blind dates. So, I'm a bit confused."
But I was just a messenger. I shouldn't influence Christopher's decisions. So, I added, "But since you have decided, I'm sure you have your reasons."
I admired my own diplomatic skills.
Christopher didn't explain further. He just said, "Arrange the blind dates discreetly."
"Okay. Any specific time or place?"
"Anytime outside of work hours. You decide."
"Got it!"
I made an OK gesture.
Christopher frowned slightly at my enthusiasm. "You seem happy?"
"No, not at all!" I was just relieved to have solved a problem, which made me happy.
But I couldn't show too much happiness when Christopher was being forced into blind dates. It might make him jealous.
Christopher gave me some advice, "If the Collins family contacts you again, just do as they say."
"I understand!"
Basically, I should agree to everything and then inform Christopher. He had his own plans and would play along.
Just like this time with the blind dates.
