Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 260
Christopher's eyes darkened, and in the dim light of night, I couldn't see clearly. I figured it was because he couldn't be as stubborn as I was.
I quickly wiped the smile off my face, not wanting to tick him off.
Not long after, my phone rang. It was Marlowe.
I learned that Faye had invited Marlowe too.
She was calling to gloat, "Mrs. Collins really likes me. She invited me over to her place. The Collins family has connections everywhere, lots of big shots. This is a huge opportunity for me to interview them. Mrs. Collins treats me like family."
She thought she was being classy, showing off her skills, and trying to prove she was worthy of Christopher with her looks, figure, and talents.
Watching her excitement, I wanted to tell her she was just being used, and that Faye and Christopher's relationship was in the dumps. If she wanted to be with Christopher, shouldn't she focus on him?
Faye was using her to pressure Christopher. If Faye succeeded, all of Christopher's hard work over the years would go down the drain.
I started to say, "Marlowe, aren't you worried..."
Before I could finish, Marlowe cut me off, convinced I was just trying to stir up trouble and make her miss the party.
"You're such a bitter woman. Just because you're miserable, you think everyone else is too. Melinda, you and I are going to be in different worlds soon." Marlowe sneered proudly.
Fine, if she didn't want to listen, I wasn't going to waste my breath.
This was her choice, and whatever happened next, she couldn't blame anyone else.
For some reason, it was the first time since that night that I dreamt about what happened in the hotel.
The heat, the moans, the heavy breathing made my face flush.
I tried to see the man's face. From the touch, I felt his distinct features. Someone with such good bone structure must be handsome.
"Who are you?" I asked him in my dream.
I even tried to get up and turn on the light to see his face, but he seemed to sense my intention. His face was buried in my chest, moving up slowly, but I still couldn't see it clearly.
Just as I was about to hold his face to see it clearly, suddenly, that face rubbed against me. I was thrilled, thinking he had decided to let me see his face.
Then, I was licked awake by Sunny's slobbery tongue.
I was furious and, in my groggy state, seemed to have scolded Sunny, making it yelp in pain.
Only then did I realize I had remembered some fragments of that night.
The only regret was that I still didn't see his face clearly.
It was all Sunny's fault. If it weren't for it, I might have seen who that person was.
I planned to go back to sleep, hoping to continue the dream, but unfortunately, I couldn't. I didn't dream of that night again.
After all that fuss, I remembered I was supposed to meet Cassius and Magnus today.
I quickly got up and got ready, thinking I might as well skip breakfast at Christopher's place.
To my surprise, as soon as I stepped out, Christopher's car was already parked at my door.
I asked, "What are you doing here?"
"Aren't you going to Cassius's place? I'll take you."
"No need, I can go by myself!" I shot back.
Christopher added, "I'll have breakfast there."
The hotel should have breakfast, but wasn't Tiana home? Why go to the hotel for breakfast?
"Tiana's busy. I'll take you to the hotel so she doesn't have to prepare."
Since he put it that way, I couldn't refuse.
Older folks didn't sleep in much. By the time we arrived, the two elders were already up. They probably knew we were coming, so they had the hotel delay breakfast delivery.
We had seen Magnus yesterday, but I hadn't seen Cassius for a few days. Still, Cassius recognized me immediately.
"Melinda, I thought you had forgotten about me. I haven't forgotten you. If you really forgot me, that would mean your memory is worse than mine."
Cassius looked at me with a hopeful expression, like a child seeking praise.
I couldn't help but compliment him, "Cassius, you're amazing."
Then, Cassius seemed to notice Christopher for the first time, looking puzzled, "Who are you?"
Alright, I got it. Cassius had forgotten Christopher.
As I was thinking of how to introduce Christopher, Cassius spoke again, getting quite close, "This face, not bad. Strong brows, bright eyes, a good man."
Then he looked at me and Christopher, as if having an epiphany.
I thought he remembered Christopher, but he suddenly slapped his thigh and pulled us together, cheek to cheek, "Nice, a perfect match. You two are a couple, right? Melinda, why didn't you tell me you had a boyfriend?"
"No, I don't!" I waved my hand, denying it.
Cassius looked disappointed, then turned to Christopher, "Do you have a girlfriend?"
Christopher shook his head, saying no.
Afraid Cassius would say something else, I quickly explained, "Cassius, he doesn't have a girlfriend, but he likes someone."
Cassius was persistent, asking Christopher, "How does the person you like compare to Melinda? If she's not as good, Melinda is right here. Missing out would be your loss."
Christopher, playing along, said, "I understand."
"Good, you're teachable. Melinda is kind but not easy to pursue. You need to be strategic..."
Cassius then started giving advice.
Christopher didn't brush him off, listening seriously.
I could only say, one dared to teach, and the other dared to learn.
It was Magnus who finally rescued Christopher.
"Cassius, stop giving bad advice. Your tricks didn't work back then, and they won't work now. If he follows your advice and can't find a girlfriend, he'll come after you!"
Magnus then started bickering with Cassius.
I had heard about Cassius's story from Magnus.
Magnus had been oppressed during a difficult time. His wife abandoned him, leaving their son in the countryside, where he was mistreated and forced to marry a local girl. He refused, and with his sensitive background, he was tortured, breaking his leg and injuring his body.
When he finally returned, his weakened son didn't survive more than two years.
Now Cassius had this illness. Just thinking about it made my heart ache.
Fortunately, he had a good friend like Magnus, so he wasn't completely alone.
If Cassius was willing to stay, I would have taken care of him, but he probably didn't want to. Magnus was in Rosewood City, which was his home. He wanted to take Cassius back with him. They would be leaving soon.
