Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 254
Marlowe seemed to be struggling to cope with the blow.
She was lost in her own thoughts, clinging to her beliefs. "No, it can't be. You're lying. I know why you're saying this. You're trying to deceive Faye, aren't you? I heard that you and Faye..."
I gasped. I was terrified that Marlowe might reveal the truth, which could provoke Christopher's immense wrath.
I was also worried that Marlowe might foolishly spread the word, so I held my breath, hoping that by doing so, I could prevent her from saying something disastrous.
Christopher said, "It has nothing to do with anyone or anything. Whether you're talking nonsense or delusional, I can tell you clearly that I have never liked you."
"No, that's impossible. What are you avoiding, Christopher? Do you realize that by doing this, you're pushing me far away? Then there really won't be any future for us," Marlowe shouted, agitated.
Christopher had completely lost his patience.
He opened the door to leave and then locked eyes with me.
Caught eavesdropping, I felt a wave of embarrassment.
I tried to stay calm and handed him the documents.
Christopher took the documents but immediately ordered me, "Get Vincent to escort her out. And don't let Marlowe enter the company again."
Marlowe looked at Christopher in disbelief. "Christopher, do you really have to be this cold and heartless?"
Christopher's indifferent back was the only response she got.
Marlowe maintained her elegance on the surface, but the tension in her clenched fists betrayed her true feelings.
She had no choice but to leave, trying to preserve her dignity. "I'll go. No need for anyone to escort me."
But facing me, she couldn't hide her frustration. This emotion made her want to vent, and I became her target.
"You heard our conversation, didn't you? People like you, eavesdropping, really have no class," Marlowe sneered.
I hadn't said a word. Although I accidentally overheard, I didn't leave, which was indeed wrong.
Marlowe continued, "You must think that Christopher's harsh words mean he really doesn't like me, right? Or are you secretly pleased, thinking I'm delusional?"
"Let me tell you, you're wrong. Christopher doesn't want to admit he likes me because of certain people and certain things. He's protecting me. Once he clears all obstacles, he'll openly confess his love for me, and we can tell the world about our mutual feelings."
I believed it. I believed Christopher liked Marlowe.
Because his attitude towards Marlowe was different from others.
As for the "certain people," she was referring to Faye.
So, I had no response.
Marlowe seemed to regain her confidence and left the company with her head held high.
But her words to Christopher echoed in my mind, "Christopher, that incident was an accident. Since it happened and can't be changed, let's move forward, okay? Besides that incident, can't we be good together?"
What was that incident?
Did Marlowe go through something bad?
But there was no trace of it in her records, and even someone as well-informed as Paula hadn't mentioned it.
Though I was deeply curious, I had to set it aside for now.
There were many documents to handle today, and I couldn't waste more time on these trivial matters. I focused entirely on my work.
I didn't expect Christopher to knock on my door just before I was about to leave.
"Mr. Collins!"
I was surprised to see Christopher at the door.
Given his argument with Marlowe, I thought he would be upset, having to let go of something for some reason.
But he didn't seem affected at all.
Maybe he was just good at hiding his emotions.
"The auction is about to start. I'll take you there," Christopher said.
I knew about the auction because I had just talked to Cassius on the phone.
Quinlan had called me, mentioning that Magnus and Cassius had visited Hayes' room.
Magnus was someone we had a hard time inviting, but he had trouble communicating with Hayes, so we were worried he might leave. I called Cassius to test the waters.
Cassius was very kind. To keep Magnus around, he expressed his desire to stay for a few more days.
Magnus, not wanting to leave Cassius alone, agreed to stay.
I was touched. From the noise on Cassius' end, I worried he might have gone out alone, but he assured me that Magnus was with him at the auction.
I felt relieved but slightly regretful. I should have accompanied the two elders, but I almost forgot.
"Not going?" Christopher looked at me and asked.
"Of course, I'm going!" I replied without hesitation.
Christopher told me to get ready quickly. "The two elders came all the way to Starlight City. We should accompany them."
So he suggested I join them at the auction.
I was more than happy to.
When Cassius mentioned the auction, I had intended to give him something.
Cassius saw through my intentions and told me, "At my age, money and possessions don't matter. You don't need to think about giving me anything. I just enjoy seeing you happy."
Every time I remembered his words, I felt a pang of emotion.
After we got in the car, I was surprised when Christopher pulled out some pre-prepared desserts from a bag.
The sweet aroma filled the car, probably because of the confined space.
"Have a snack," Christopher said naturally, handing me a fork with the dessert.
His actions were so natural, as if he had done it countless times. For a moment, it felt like we were a loving couple.
I quickly dismissed that thought.
Christopher's familiarity made me wonder if he had done this for Marlowe many times, which might explain why she was so sure he liked her.
Thinking about Christopher liking someone like her, I felt a bit down.
I decided to stay silent and quietly ate the dessert.
I recognized the taste of this dessert. It wasn't close to the company, so I wondered when Christopher had someone buy it. Did he go out in the afternoon and buy it on the way back?
I remembered this dessert because it was the only one that could compare to the ones Tiana made.
The car ride was smooth. After finishing one dessert, Christopher was about to give me a second one, but I refused. If I kept eating, I'd turn into a little chubby.
Christopher looked me up and down. "You're fine. Even if you gain a few pounds, you won't be fat!"
I didn't believe him, thinking he was just being nice, and firmly refused the second dessert.
Soon, the car stopped outside the auction venue. This auction had quite the buzz, attracting people like Magnus and Cassius, indicating the items were impressive. Otherwise, they wouldn't be interested.
