Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 94
Paula saw my silence and understood what I meant.
"Don't worry, I'll push Vance today and give him a final deadline. If he still can't find out, I'll dock his pay."
Paula said righteously.
I knew she was just joking, "Just do your best."
"Aren't you going to see Lawrence later? Why don't you ask him again and see if he knows who the man that night was?" Paula suggested after thinking for a moment.
I nodded, "That's all I can do. I suspect he knows, otherwise, every time I mention the man from that night, Lawrence grits his teeth like that man killed his whole family. But it's also possible he doesn't know.
However, from what I know about Lawrence, he might not be willing to say it, so I said I can only try. As for the result, it depends on luck. I won't be too obsessed with finding out who that man is."
"Your attitude is good, always looking forward. If not, maybe Clara knows something, you can ask her then." Paula nodded.
Clara?
I have even less hope for that. Given her dislike for me, she probably wouldn't be willing to say anything.
Forget it, I won't think about it anymore.
I originally told Christopher that I would go see Lawrence tomorrow, but visiting requires an appointment in advance, and then the lawyer has to negotiate and confirm the specific time.
So, after Jason went to ask, the final time to see Lawrence was set for three days later. I wasn't in a hurry, and these three days were just right for me to relax and organize things at home.
At the same time, I wanted to plant some new varieties of the plants I was taking care of at home.
It felt like a peaceful time, a relaxation I had never experienced before.
One day, even Christopher went on a business trip, but when I looked at the window across from my house, on the second floor, there seemed to be a shadow.
I was curious and asked Tiana, "Didn't Christopher go on a business trip? How come I saw someone at his house yesterday?"
Tiana was stunned for a moment, then thought and replied, "It might be Paxton Owens. Sometimes Mr. Collins forgets some documents, or sometimes Mr. Collins is at home and needs to sign some important documents, Paxton will come over."
I nodded, "I see."
I didn't ask any more questions.
Paula also asked me in the past two days what kind of job I was planning to apply for. I studied programming design back then and also took a few more general foreign languages to help me read some foreign journals. Plus, I did make some investments.
So I planned to look for programming design, or translation, or maybe something in finance, like investment banking.
For this, I made a detailed resume. I was quite familiar with translation and investment banking, but I hadn't used programming design much since graduation, so the chances of success might not be high.
After sending out my resume, before I got any interviews, it was time to visit Lawrence.
Christopher drove me there.
He said, "I promised to go with you, so I'll take you there!"
Since he said that, it would be pretentious of me to refuse.
In the car, Christopher specifically reminded me, "Lawrence is someone who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, and he is very determined. You'd better think about his weaknesses and use them, otherwise, he might not tell the truth."
Weaknesses?
I tried to recall my years of interaction with Lawrence. Most of the time, he was good to me, and I really hadn't paid much attention to what kind of person Lawrence truly was.
My impression of him was always gentle and polite.
Thinking about it, I was a bit surprised.
There was indeed one thing that made Lawrence lose his composure and have significant emotional fluctuations.
My gaze unconsciously turned to Christopher.
Lawrence seemed to have an unusually strong hostility towards Christopher. Could it be that I had to use Christopher to provoke Lawrence?
Thinking about it, it might not be effective, and there was no need to involve an innocent person like Christopher.
Then there was Lawrence's mom, Missy!
That time he abused me, it seemed to be because I accidentally pushed Missy. It was also because of that incident that I overheard their plot against me.
Although Lawrence was selfish, he seemed quite filial. Maybe it was because Missy raised five children on her own, which was indeed not easy. And as the only son in the family, Missy must have given him the best of everything.
I thought, maybe I could start with Missy and see if I could get some useful information.
The car drove smoothly, and soon we arrived at the prison.
Christopher waited outside while I went to see Lawrence alone.
Because Jason had something to do, Fallon was supposed to accompany me, but Lawrence demanded that either he sees me alone or not at all. The final result was that I went to see him alone.
After more than a month, seeing Lawrence again, he was wearing prison clothes. Although not very sloppy, he had dark circles under his eyes, and his eyes were sunken. The once rosy and energetic face was gone, and he looked haggard, as if all his energy had been drained.
The Lawrence who used to be impeccably dressed and acted so gentlemanly outside was hard to connect with the person he was now.
Moreover, the once gentle Lawrence looked particularly fierce today, with a heavy air of hostility.
He looked like a rat in a gutter, his eyes staring at me with a sinister and terrifying look.
"Melinda, you dare to come see me!" His voice was cold, and his eyes seemed poisoned, wishing to kill me.
I was unafraid, "Why wouldn't I dare? What can you do to me now?"
Lawrence's face flashed with hatred and helplessness. He almost spat out the words through gritted teeth, "I wasn't ruthless enough. If I had known it would come to this, I should have killed you earlier."
I looked at him mockingly, "There's no such thing as regret or 'if only' in this world. It's too late! I'm standing here alive and well, and you're reaping what you sowed, getting the punishment you deserve."
Lawrence's breath hitched. He looked at me viciously, as if he would break through the bars and tear me apart in the next moment.
But the next moment, he surprisingly calmed down and asked coldly, "I guess you're not here to see how I'm doing now. There's something you want to know, right? Speak!"
He calmed down and looked at me with such confidence that I had to admire his determination, "I've been waiting for you to come to me again. Sure enough, I have you figured out. If it weren't for your good luck, you would have been dead by my hands long ago."
Lawrence was right.
He hid it too well, and I trusted him too much. If it weren't for my good luck, or rather, if it weren't for the child who, in some mysterious way, exchanged her life for my chance of survival, I might really be dead.
Thinking of the child, I felt hatred in my heart, but today I wasn't here to argue with Lawrence. I suppressed my anger and agitation.
The important thing first!
