Jason must have noticed how Marlowe was treating me.

He apologized on her behalf, "Ms. Turner, sorry if Marlowe came off a bit harsh. She's probably just having a rough day. Hope you don't mind."

I should have cut Jason some slack. But I knew Marlowe wouldn't appreciate it.

After all, when Jason spoke, Marlowe's eyes showed no hint of apology. Instead, her coldness towards me intensified.

"Mr. Cook, I can let it slide, but she might not appreciate it. I don't think I'm the type to provoke others, but some people really need to get their heads checked. Maybe there's something not quite right up there." I pointed to my head, making my implication clear.

Knowing better, I took the elevator and left.

My life was more important. The less I knew about these big shots' disputes, the better.

But Quinlan's parents were smarter than I thought. They didn't come straight to my place when they arrived in Starlight City.

They went straight to Echo Magazine after getting off the train, looking overly modest and somewhat shabby, but with a strong presence.

I happened to be passing by and saw Quinlan's parents calling out Marlowe's name at the magazine's entrance. Curious, I followed them and found a hiding spot to see what was going on.

Marlowe, too self-assured, had no idea what she was getting into with Quinlan's parents.

They said it took a villain to deal with a villain. Marlowe and Quinlan's parents were a perfect match.

Quinlan's parents were there to find Quinlan, not out of concern, but to continue exploiting her.

"You called us all the way to Starlight City to find Quinlan and bring her back. Now that we're here, you tell us you don't know where she is? Are you messing with us? Or are you in cahoots with her to trick us?" Quinlan's parents were livid when they heard Quinlan couldn't be found.

Marlowe knew rural folks could be rough around the edges, but she'd never seen true crudeness. Quinlan's parents' sudden change in demeanor shocked her.

"Because of your call, we scraped together the money for the trip. We have no money to go back, and we're old and frail. After such a long journey, we're not feeling well. You should cover our medical expenses, travel costs, and some kind of compensation. Not a penny less!" Quinlan's father pointed at Marlowe, shouting.

Quinlan's mother chimed in, "Yeah, not a penny less!"

"Get your facts straight. I was being kind, thinking you couldn't find your daughter, so I told you where she was. Instead of being grateful, you want money from me. This is a big city, not your rural backwater. We follow the law here. What you're doing is extortion. If you don't leave, I can call the police."

Marlowe was starting to regret her decision. She'd heard that the countryside bred troublemakers, and now she was seeing it firsthand.

Like mother, like daughter. Quinlan was annoying, and so were her parents.

I could guess Marlowe's thoughts from her expression and words.

But her regret wasn't for causing trouble for Quinlan. It was because Quinlan's parents were too annoying.

"Who are you trying to scare?" Quinlan's parents had done worse. They wouldn't be intimidated by Marlowe's words.

When they mistreated Quinlan, even the police couldn't stop them. Quinlan's father went to jail and came out unchanged.

"If you don't call the police, we will!" Quinlan's parents were relentless.

I watched Marlowe turn red with anger but hold back.

Marlowe's position as editor-in-chief was already shaky after the failed interview with Christopher. She probably didn't want more trouble and wanted to settle things quietly.

"Your daughter is in Starlight City. I've told you where she is. I'm done talking." She tried to get into her car, but Quinlan's parents blocked her.

Quinlan's father, a real scoundrel, said, "You can't leave. You called us here. We're from the countryside and don't know anything. How can you abandon us? Or do you look down on us because we're from the mountains? I believe you wouldn't do that. As a chief editor, you must be kind-hearted. How could you let us be homeless?"

He eyed Marlowe's car greedily. "You're a chief editor. You must have money, right?"

Marlowe finally understood their game.

Her eyes flashed. "If you need money, you should contact your relative..."

Quinlan's parents' relative in Starlight City was me.

But Marlowe stopped mid-sentence for some reason.
