I was speechless.

Christopher was the kind of guy who always followed through on his promises.

I nodded in agreement.

Then he asked me to jot down all the changes I wanted and send them over. I did as he asked.

"Mr. Collins, about the price?"

Honestly, I was hoping it would be a bit pricey so I could use that as an excuse to back out.

"Twelve thousand dollars!"

With that price, I couldn't use the excuse that it was too expensive.

Christopher noticed my silence and raised an eyebrow. "Too expensive?"

"No, no!" I waved my hands frantically. "With your recommendation, Mr. Collins, it must be a great deal. I'm sure I'm getting a discount thanks to you."

"Now you're talking. Because of that, you'll be satisfied!"

I pretended not to hear Christopher's teasing.

But the final result was more than satisfactory—it was perfect.

It was better than I had expected, even including some adjustments I hadn't mentioned.

Aside from the exterior, it was like having a new car.

I felt that the twelve thousand dollars I paid was a steal.

So, I wanted to give Christopher more money, since it was his friend who helped. Even if they didn't make much profit, at least they shouldn't lose money.

"Mr. Collins, this price is really low. I've already used your favor, and I don't want your friend to lose money. It's embarrassing," I said, feeling awkward.

Christopher was very calm. "Whether my friend loses money or not is not your concern. You don't need to feel it's too low. Consider it a reward for your recent good work. At Summit Innovations Group, I always reward and punish fairly."

Since he put it that way, it was an acknowledgment of my work. How could I refuse?

Admitting that I hadn't worked hard wasn't an option.

Later, when I found out that Christopher had personally modified my car, I felt a mix of emotions.

The car worked better, seemed faster, and my mood improved.

Also, since I had sent my dog Sunny to Christopher's house next door, where Tiana walked it, Sunny didn't cling to me as much when I got home. I had more time and felt more relaxed and motivated.

However, while my mood improved, someone else's didn't. In fact, her bad mood made her want everyone else to be miserable too.

Marlowe, who had been quiet for less than two days, suddenly called me.

I was about to have lunch.

When I answered, she was as bossy as ever. "Meet me at the Starbucks downstairs from your office!"

I was amused by her arrogance. "I'm not your employee, and we're not close. Who do you think you are to order me around? I'm not going!"

Marlowe's anger was palpable even over the phone.

Her voice was sharp. "Melinda, you're smart. Listen to what I have to say before deciding. I guess Quinlan is still hiding somewhere in Starlight City, right? She's been away from home for too long. I've invited her dear parents to come find her. They should be arriving in Starlight City soon. If you don't want me to give them her address, you know what to do."

"Threatening me?" I sneered, feeling a surge of anger at Marlowe for targeting Quinlan. "I can't believe you haven't looked into how your brother met Quinlan. Whether she approached him on purpose or helped him, as a magazine editor, you should know better than to target her unfairly."

"Does the truth matter?" Marlowe's cold voice sent chills down my spine.

She had the means. If she cared about her brother, she would have investigated. Yet, she still chose to target Quinlan. Calling her evil seemed insufficient.

"Ms. Grey, I didn't expect you to be this kind of person. What right do you have to target Quinlan?"

If Marlowe were in front of me, I might have punched her, regardless of whether Christopher liked her.

Marlowe ignored my sarcasm.

She only threatened, "You have four minutes. I want to see you. Otherwise, don't blame me for being rude!"

She hung up before I could respond.

Despite my anger, I went for Quinlan's sake.

I was also curious about what demands she would make, which would reveal her true intentions.

Four minutes to take the elevator down and get to the third-floor Starbucks.

I arrived in front of Marlowe, panting.

In contrast to my disheveled state, Marlowe looked composed, her hair neatly done and her elegant dress making her look graceful.

She seemed to enjoy my disarray, her lips curling slightly as she glanced at her watch. "Three minutes and forty-eight seconds. Very obedient. It shows you care about Quinlan."

Marlowe's smugness was evident. She probably thought she had me cornered.

I didn't sit down immediately. After catching my breath, I looked down at her, meeting her gaze.

Our eyes seemed to battle in the air.

Anyone passing by could sense the tension between us.

"You..." Marlowe was about to point at me when suddenly...

"Sorry, ma'am, I'm really sorry. I didn't expect you to raise your hand. Here's your coffee!" A familiar voice apologized.

The coffee in the server's hand spilled half onto Marlowe's dress.

Marlowe stood up angrily, yelling at the server, "What's wrong with you? You ruined my dress! Can you afford to pay for it? And you're blaming me? Get your manager!"

Ophelia, hearing about compensation, quickly tried to wipe the coffee off Marlowe. "I'm sorry, let me clean it. I didn't mean to..."

Recognizing the situation, I noticed Ophelia's underlying anger and disdain, but she apologized earnestly.

Marlowe, as a long-time editor, likely had a high salary and savings, wearing designer clothes. Compensating for the dress would be a burden for Ophelia.

Though I didn't like Ophelia, I disliked Marlowe more.
