Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 112
I was at a loss for words. I wanted to say it wasn't intentional, but would Christopher believe me?
"Sorry, are you okay?" I was sprawled on top of him, quickly trying to push myself up. My hands were pressed against his firm chest, and in my haste, I ended up pushing a few times before I could stand. It must have looked like I was groping him.
Once I stood up, Christopher propped himself up on the edge of the bed, his face unreadable.
"Christopher, I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to. Are you okay?" I asked, my face flushed with embarrassment, avoiding his gaze.
"It's fine, there's a carpet," Christopher replied calmly, without a hint of anger.
I felt a bit relieved, though still awkward, and tried to explain, "Paxton's family is sick, and you had a high fever last night, so he asked me to check on you. That's why I came over."
In other words, please don't think I had any ulterior motives.
I said this while looking down, but there was no response.
I couldn't help but sneak a glance at him, trying to gauge his reaction.
Our eyes met, and I felt even more embarrassed.
It was like being caught red-handed, and I wanted to flee immediately.
He remained silent, so I said, "Well, you seem to be feeling better, right? If you're okay, I'll head out now."
Without giving Christopher a chance to respond, I bolted out of the room.
"Thanks for last night," Christopher's sincere voice almost made me trip.
"No need to thank me! Just rest well," I said hurriedly before running off.
Even after I got home and lay in bed, my heart was pounding for a long time before I calmed down.
At work, I tried to avoid Christopher, fearing he might confront me about undressing him or climbing into his bed with ulterior motives.
Although he hadn't mentioned it, what if he remembered later?
Fortunately, my tasks over the next few days didn't involve working near Christopher, so I avoided any awkward encounters.
A few days passed.
Paxton returned to work. He took some time during lunch to invite me out, wanting to thank me for my help that day.
I hadn't expected anything in return, so I waved off his gratitude.
"It was nothing, you don't need to treat me to a meal," I said, waving my hand dismissively.
Paxton looked at me with even more sincerity and gratitude, then changed the subject, "Ms. Turner, would you be interested in becoming Mr. Collins' personal assistant?"
I was so shocked I nearly choked, quickly taking several sips of juice to compose myself. My face was still flushed as I asked, "Paxton, this isn't a joke, right?"
Paxton shook his head. "You know my character, I wouldn't joke about Mr. Collins."
"True, but why me? I've only been with the company for a short time, and I'm not exactly specialized in this field," I said, clearly feeling unqualified.
Paxton sighed and explained, "My mom's got liver cancer, and my wife's about to give birth. My family's not in Starlight City, so we don't have anyone to help out. It's tough managing everything, including finding a place to stay."
"So, I'll need to take some time off to care for my family, leaving Mr. Collins without an assistant. I thought of you because you took good care of Mr. Collins that night. I later asked him, and he praised you, so it seems he's satisfied with you."
"You're also very meticulous in your work and adapt quickly, so I thought you might be a good fit as Mr. Collins' assistant."
His praise made me feel like I was really capable.
Still, I wasn't confident. Paxton's abilities were well-known, and I doubted I could handle things as perfectly as he did. I continued to question, "Have you considered hiring a new, excellent assistant through HR? With Summit Innovations Group's reputation, many would be eager to apply."
Paxton looked at me with a slight, troubled smile. "You know Mr. Collins' personality. He seems distant and cold, and he's very demanding of himself and others. If we bring in someone new, the lack of rapport could hinder work."
That was a valid point, but it seemed surmountable.
And as a newcomer, I wasn't sure I could quickly get up to speed either.
I voiced my thoughts unconsciously.
"Ms. Turner, from our interactions, it's clear Mr. Collins treats you differently from other women. He might be more familiar and patient with you," Paxton nodded in agreement.
He continued, "Initially, I wasn't sure, but after you helped that night and Mr. Collins praised you, I realized his attitude towards you. You might think it's just a simple compliment, but Mr. Collins rarely praises anyone. For him to commend you, Ms. Turner, shows he recognizes your intelligence and diligence. Such talent is always appreciated."
"So, Ms. Turner, I believe you could quickly learn the assistant role with Mr. Collins, and it would ease my mind, knowing the trouble is due to my personal reasons. What do you think?"
I was surprised to hear Christopher had praised me, feeling a warm, unexpected joy.
In my experience, Christopher had always been very strict with me, so I believed Paxton's words without doubt.
To persuade me further, Paxton added, "Ms. Turner, this is the first time Mr. Collins has shown such appreciation for a woman. There's even a rumor that he might have a dysfunction, as he only keeps male pets. Some suspect he might prefer men, but he praised you. Mr. Collins has never treated any woman, no matter how outstanding, with such regard. Only you."
Paxton was bold, voicing such rumors, likely harboring some doubts himself.
I looked at Paxton in shock. "You're really bold to say that out loud."
