Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 233

"Can you say that again?" I asked with a smile, holding up my phone.

Ophelia ignored me and picked up her wine glass, downing many glasses in quick succession. She ended up getting pretty drunk.

To make sure she got home safely, I took her back to her place before heading home myself. By the time I got back, it was pretty late.

When I went to Christopher's house to pick up Sunny, Biscuit was unusually enthusiastic.

I figured Sunny's boundless energy must have worn Biscuit out, and my arrival probably felt like a relief to it. Biscuit's warm welcome was a stark contrast to its usual indifference towards me.

"Biscuit, let me give you a hug!" I couldn't resist the opportunity, so I bent down to scoop it up. But Biscuit, despite its enthusiasm, darted towards the stairs.

I looked up, ready to complain about its sudden change of heart, when I saw Christopher coming down the stairs. His hair was slightly damp, with droplets of water still clinging to it, and he was dressed in a white T-shirt and casual pants, looking very relaxed.

I quickly composed myself and tried to sound natural. "Sorry, I got held up with something today. Sunny was a bit too energetic, and even Biscuit couldn't handle it. Next time, I'll give you a key to my place. If I'm late, you can just drop Sunny off at my house."

As I spoke, Christopher walked over to me. Biscuit circled around his feet, clearly very attached to him. Unlike Sunny, who was always so independent.

Suddenly, Christopher leaned in closer and sniffed. "Have you been drinking? And driving?"

His eyebrows furrowed in disapproval. He had no idea how his warm breath on my ear made me shiver and blush.

"No, it was my friend's drink. I must have gotten some on my clothes while helping her," I explained instinctively.

Christopher's gaze fell on my ears. "Your ears are red. It could easily be mistaken for you having had a drink."

The smell of alcohol was strong enough for him to notice. I couldn't very well tell him that his proximity and warm breath had made me blush.

"Sunny, let's go!" I called, trying to distract myself. Sunny looked reluctant to leave, while Biscuit continued to circle Christopher. I wished I had a dog like Biscuit.

Did Christopher like this kind of dog? It reminded me of Marlowe. Sometimes Marlowe could be clingy, while Christopher seemed aloof, though he was passionate inside. This could easily send mixed signals to Marlowe.

If he wanted to win Marlowe over, he couldn't let her feel neglected. Considering how much he had helped me and that we were friends, I was about to give him some advice when he got a phone call.

The voice on the other end was tearful. "Christopher, help me!"

I recognized it as Marlowe's voice.

"What's going on?" Christopher asked calmly.

Even in this situation, Christopher remained composed.

"It's people from Vanguard Motors, Inc. They were upset because I backed out of a deal with them to sign with your company. Their sales have been terrible, and now they're following and harassing me."

Marlowe's voice trembled with fear. This was Christopher's chance to be her hero and deepen their relationship.

I couldn't help but look at him. Christopher, however, remained indifferent. "Call the police. I'll send Jason over."

I was shocked. Was he trying to push Marlowe towards Jason? Did he not realize Jason's feelings, or was he so confident that Marlowe would end up with him?

'This is a great opportunity!' I thought.

"I already called the police, but I'm still scared. What if they send someone else? I'm all alone at home! Jason is probably busy and can't be reached!"

Seeing Christopher's cluelessness, I gently reminded him, "Christopher, she's really scared right now. Maybe you should go check on her."

Christopher looked at me. "You think I should go?"

I blinked. "It's your call, Christopher."

He hung up the phone and asked me to drive him over. I was stunned. This was the perfect time to strengthen their bond, and he wanted me to come along.

And Marlowe had made it clear she wanted him there. If I went, it might upset her and make her hostile towards me again.

Christopher seemed oblivious to my true feelings. He changed into some casual clothes and took me along to see Marlowe.

What puzzled me was that Christopher didn't know Marlowe's address. He had to get it from Jason. If he liked her, wouldn't he have already found out everything about her?

When we arrived at Marlowe's apartment complex, I planned to stay downstairs to give them some privacy. But Christopher insisted, "You come with me."

I pointed to myself. "Are you sure?"

Christopher frowned. "Marlowe is a woman. It's more appropriate for you to go."

I wanted to see what was going on in Christopher's head. Didn't he realize this was the perfect chance to comfort Marlowe and make her fall for him? But he didn't give me a chance to argue and pulled me along.

Reluctantly, I followed him upstairs. But we couldn't reach Marlowe. Her phone was off, and no one answered the door. I was genuinely worried about her.

After all, this involved Quinlan and our company. Marlowe had chosen us, putting herself in danger. We had to help her. Moreover, Hayes was a genius. As Hayes's sister, we hoped that she would be well.

Christopher finally got the building manager to let us in, and we hurried upstairs.
