The next morning, when I woke up, Quinlan had already made breakfast and left me a note saying she had to head back.

I also called Blair to check in. Her tone was much lighter than yesterday, indicating that Hayes was indeed recovering well.

After a moment of hesitation, Blair asked the question that had been on her mind, "Ms. Turner, you mentioned Ms. Grey before. I'm not defending her, but I still find it hard to believe it was her."

She continued, "She may have a bit of a temper, but I can tell that Ms. Grey really cares about Hayes. I had to admit that Blair, who interacted with them regularly, had a valid point. She was a straightforward person who judged others by their actions.

I said, "You're right, it wasn't her. Someone set her up to hurt Hayes. Blair, you'll need to be extra vigilant in taking care of him. We can't let anyone exploit any gaps."

"Who would be so heartless? Hayes is just an innocent person. How could anyone bear to harm him? Ms. Turner, do you mean someone else might still try to hurt Hayes?"

"Blair, don't worry too much. Now that we know someone is targeting Hayes, we'll take precautions. Just continue to care for him as you have been, and leave the rest to us."

Blair seemed reassured by my words.

She then brought up Quinlan, "Ms. Turner, you might want to talk to Quinlan. She's convinced that Ms. Grey is responsible and is determined to confront her. She's very upset and aggressive about it."

So that was Quinlan's plan.

"No, Quinlan, you can't do that. Besides, Marlowe isn't the real culprit." I quickly tried to dissuade her.

Quinlan was skeptical. "Melinda, are you just saying that to stop me? Or did Mr. Collins put you up to this?"

"No, it's the truth!"

"Then tell me, who is the real culprit?" Quinlan demanded, ready to continue her plan if I couldn't convince her.

Seeing her determination, I had no choice but to tell her the truth. "It was Faye."

Quinlan was puzzled, clearly wondering why Faye would do such a thing.

I explained Christopher's family situation to her.

"So, you can't write about this, not even with pseudonyms. If the Collins family finds out about Hayes's value, they might use Marlowe to manipulate Hayes, causing him even more harm. Quinlan, you can't be reckless. Some actions can lead to irreversible consequences."

"Alright, Melinda, I understand."

Quinlan finally gave up on her plan.

She mumbled something I couldn't hear, so I asked, "What did you say?"

"Nothing. I just said I won't write about Marlowe anymore. Even with pseudonyms, people might figure out it's about Hayes, and he wouldn't be able to handle it. I didn't think it through."

Quinlan quickly explained.

It was good that she understood.

As for the rest, jealousy, the Collins family, none of that mattered to me.

Knowing she didn't like Christopher, I felt relieved she wouldn't be hurt by his feelings for Marlowe.
