Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 329
It was a young man in his early twenties.
He was dressed in a suit, suggesting he was well-off.
But his face was twisted in a scowl, and his features were rather plain. Coupled with that fierce expression, it was hard to muster any goodwill towards him.
I couldn't help but stare at him for a few moments, feeling like I had seen him somewhere before, but I couldn't quite place it.
"What are you staring at? I know I'm good-looking, but someone like you shouldn't even dream about it."
This guy was really full of himself.
Before Paula could respond, he noticed my gaze and arrogantly spoke up.
Paula was instantly furious.
"Where did this mad man come from? First, you barged in and started scolding people, and now you're acting all high and mighty. You should go look in the mirror. With a face like that, you think my beautiful friend would be interested in you? She was just looking at you like one would look at a mad man."
Paula was ruthless when it came to insults.
She really knew how to tear someone down.
I chimed in coldly, "Sorry, but my standards are pretty high. I wouldn't be interested in someone like you."
The guy snorted, "Paula, did you deliberately kick my foot just now, causing me to stumble into the waiter and spill that plate of pork chops on Mrs. Collins?"
Of course, he hadn't escaped unscathed either, with some of the food landing on him.
But maybe the burns weren't as bad as Faye's, or perhaps he was just tough-skinned. He had only gone to the restroom to clean up a bit before coming back to confront Paula.
Paula sneered, "You say it was me? Do you know what that's called? Slander! You ignorant fool!"
I usually didn't laugh easily, but I couldn't help it this time.
If the situation were different, I would have given Paula a thumbs up.
"Stop talking nonsense. If it wasn't you, then who else? I felt someone deliberately trip me. No one else here knows me, only you have a grudge against me, so it must be you!"
The man was so angry at Paula's words that his face turned grim, and he couldn't help but curse.
"Ridiculous! How do I have a grudge against you? We've barely met a few times at parties, and I couldn't care less about you. How does that make us enemies?"
Paula's words sounded innocent, but her expression was anything but.
She was clearly mocking him.
"Because of your good friend Azalea, my fiancée!"
Hearing Azalea's name again, I recalled the information I had read and immediately recognized who he was.
Bobby, Azalea's fiancé.
A man with no skills or ambition.
Paula pretended to be confused, "Don't you think that's contradictory? If Azalea is my good friend, as her fiancé, I should be happy for you two and treat you well. How does that make us enemies?"
"Because you look down on me and deliberately stole my fiancée!" Bobby blurted out.
Paula chuckled, pressing him further, not giving him a chance to think, "Why would I steal Azalea?"
Rich people like him were often too arrogant and had someone to clean up their messes, making them impulsive and hot-tempered.
So, provoked by Paula, he couldn't control his anger, "Because..."
He almost said it.
But the person accompanying him, sent by Lyric to keep Bobby in check, intervened.
Ever since Jason started targeting Lyric, trying to dig up dirt on her, Lyric had warned Bobby and the others to be extra careful in public.
This restaurant was bustling not just because of its great food, but also because food bloggers and influencers often promoted it. Someone might have already posted what he said.
Bobby was furious, but he had to swallow his anger and glare at Paula, "What's mine will always be mine. Azalea comes back to me, and soon we'll be a family. As Azalea's friend, you must come to our engagement party. You absolutely must!"
He emphasized his words, practically grinding his teeth.
After saying that, he saw Paula's face darken.
Only then did he leave, strutting like a victorious rooster.
As he turned to leave, he noticed me and gave me a long, meaningful look.
That look wasn't filled with disdain like before, but rather something deeper.
Maybe because she saw Bobby's look at me or she was just upset about Azalea falling into a trap, she couldn't help but curse, "Bad man, jerk!"
Then she looked at me worriedly, "If I had known we'd run into this jerk, I wouldn't have brought you here today. This guy has no limits, does all sorts of bad things, and loves to play with women. Melinda, if you ever see this jerk, stay as far away from him as possible."
I knew Paula meant well.
I had noticed Bobby's look too.
Even without Paula's warning, because of the trauma Lawrence caused me, I would stay far away from men like him.
"Paula, don't worry. I know what to do."
Seeing Paula's troubled expression, I couldn't help but ask, "Does Azalea really have to marry him?"
Paula looked at me, "Who knows? You can see Bobby is a bad man, but Azalea didn't listen to me back then. She didn't value herself. If she had just waited a year or two, she could have completely escaped. But she didn't understand. I tried to warn her, but she didn't listen, so now she has to accept her fate."
Paula said this, but I knew she was genuinely upset.
Azalea was one of her few friends, someone she cared about deeply and was willing to help despite the risks.
I reached out and held Paula's hand, "You've done your best. You've even offended Bobby for her sake. Even if you're not afraid of him, dealing with such a scumbag can still put you in a tough spot. You've done all you can."
Paula looked at me warmly, "I really can't help her now. She's being watched closely and can't see anyone. So, I've done my best."
Having come to terms with it, Paula seemed to relax a bit.
She was quick to understand and rational, just like the Paula I knew.
But mentioning Bobby inevitably reminded me of Lyric, and then Lyric made me think of Marlowe.
Marlowe had been terribly wronged by Lyric.
I wondered if Paula knew.
After thinking it over, I decided to tell Paula.
Paula was surprised but quickly accepted the news.
"Lyric always thought she was above everyone else. She liked being the boss, and had many followers. In school, she was someone people didn't dare to mess with. I heard she bullied people with her gang. I just didn't know Marlowe was one of them."
"After she went abroad and came back, she seemed different. I wondered why she suddenly wanted to rebrand herself. I thought she had changed, but it turns out Jason was pressuring her!"
Paula shared some stories from school, and she also mentioned Jason.
