Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 180
I tried to hold back, but I couldn't help myself. "I've got a copy of the notes too. If you need it, I can email it to you or print it out."
I chose a more tactful approach instead of confronting Marlowe directly. I just hoped Marlowe would vent and let it go, instead of continuing to target Quinlan.
Quinlan's eyes lit up when she heard me, and she was about to speak.
But Marlowe snapped at me, "Can you guarantee you recorded everything accurately?"
Was she trying to shift the blame onto me? Did she think I was easy to bully? Even if Christopher liked her, so what? I was getting angry, and I didn't care anymore.
"The responsibility isn't mine. Ms. Grey, are you trying to blame me? Don't forget, there's a camera here. You can compare the footage with my notes to see if I recorded everything."
I guessed I hadn't shown my temper much before, and the live stream incident had probably been forgotten over time. That was why Marlowe didn't appreciate my help and even dared to question me.
Actually, since there was a cameraman, even if Quinlan accidentally deleted the content, it wasn't a big deal. She could just organize it later to get the complete content.
Marlowe's relentless behavior only made it more obvious that she was targeting Quinlan.
Marlowe's eyes were cold and filled with malice, with no trace of gratitude.
Since Quinlan couldn't directly refute her, I wasn't afraid, and I had already started. Marlowe wouldn't appreciate my help anyway.
So I decided to be even more assertive. "And Ms. Grey, do you always falsely accuse others so casually? Do you want to check the camera over there?"
I pointed to the camera in the corner of the room. "The meeting room has a camera. I noticed you accidentally hit delete, and now you're blaming her. If you think I can't guarantee it, I won't say anything. The footage will naturally prove who's right and who's wrong."
Marlowe's face twisted with anger, and she glared at me before harshly ordering Quinlan, "Let's go!"
If they left now, Quinlan would likely face even more unfair treatment back at the office. So I couldn't let this go.
I called out sharply, "You're not leaving!"
Marlowe's icy gaze turned to me. "What do you want?" She probably didn't expect me to be so forceful, even blocking her from leaving.
"Apologize! The truth is right here!" I pointed to the camera. "So, apologize to her!" I pointed in Quinlan's direction.
Marlowe's face grew colder, and she ground her teeth, squeezing out her words, "Ms. Turner, I don't think I've offended you. Don't push your luck!"
I stood firm, my expression showing I was waiting for her apology.
She snorted, "Ms. Turner, you're meddling too much. Quinlan isn't your colleague; she's an employee of Echo Magazine, my subordinate. As her superior, I have the right to reprimand her. You're overstepping your bounds."
"I only know that we're all equals. You're a leader, but that just means different positions and responsibilities. Acting superior doesn't sit well with me, so I have to stand up for what's right."
Marlowe seemed frustrated that I wasn't backing down. "It looks more like you're picking a fight than standing up for justice. Does Mr. Collins know you're targeting me like this?"
I almost forgot that she was the one Christopher liked. But it was too late to regret now. Since I had already done it, I had to seek fairness and an apology. Otherwise, if Christopher got angry with me later, I'd be at a loss.
So I didn't back down. If she wanted to threaten me, I could do the same. "You're a public figure. Everything that just happened was caught on camera. If you don't apologize, and I expose your bullying, you'll become a big name for all the wrong reasons."
"Melinda, that's too much! Just because of a few words, you want to ruin me?"
"Just apologize and promise not to target Quinlan again. How is that ruining you?" I replied.
But someone like Marlowe, used to being in a high position, wouldn't easily back down or listen to me.
Instead, she suddenly smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Do you really think you can threaten me? Don't forget, I'm friends with Christopher. I can have the video deleted with just a word."
Marlowe's words reminded me that she was the one Christopher liked. Even though Christopher was usually fair, he might be biased towards her and have the video deleted.
I had to get the video before Christopher could have it erased, to protect Quinlan.
Even if I felt uncertain, I couldn't show it. "Mr. Collins isn't the type to ignore right and wrong and let you bully others."
She didn't know that Christopher liked her.
"Christopher isn't as idle as you. I'm not afraid of you; I just don't want to trouble him." Marlowe seemed to back down, which gave me some relief.
She appeared to apologize, but her haughty demeanor showed no sincerity. "I'll apologize to her. Let's all move on."
She spoke to me, not Quinlan. I had come this far; I wasn't going to let it go now.
"Ms. Grey, your apology lacks sincerity. And I'm worried you'll target Quinlan later. You should promise not to make things difficult for her, especially since I have the video."
"Melinda!" Marlowe thought she had softened her stance enough, but she didn't expect me to keep pushing. She was furious, her eyes filled with venom. "Don't push your luck. Who are you relying on, Paula? But be careful, or you'll fall hard."
"We'll see who falls harder!" I sneered.
Looking at her venomous glare, there was nothing attractive about her.
I almost wanted to capture her expression and show Christopher, to prove that even he had poor judgment in liking such a malicious woman.
"You should apologize to Quinlan properly!" I continued.
"I already apologized!"
I didn't back down. "Not sincerely. Apologize again!"
We were at a standoff. Marlowe seemed wary of the camera footage and finally turned to glare at Quinlan. "Do you want my apology or not?"
Even now, she was trying to intimidate.
Quinlan, who had sought my help for this job, might compromise for it. I was about to speak. But Quinlan surprised me by saying, "No!"
Marlowe raised an eyebrow in triumph, ready to smirk at me, as if to say, "See who you're defending." But her smile froze on her face.
